Going first is such an advantage, especially on the mirror. I play R/S, the difference between starting the draw engine on an empty board vs having to commit Maui before flaversham (or get flaversham at the expense of some lore for the opponent) is huge on tempo. If you draw lots of items, you can even offer a race to your opponent, which almost never happens going second (in fact, racing as the draw deck is almost impossible and one of the reasons why Ruby and Steel, the two control heavy colors, are everywhere). Let's hope the fourth edition brings something to help mitigate this problem.

Excellent video as always! I agree with the power rankings for sure. Ruby Amethyst and Steel Amethyst need different builds to be truly successful. The trouble is I just don't think they have access to cards that will make a different build viable. (and ruby amethyst has for sure been targeted into oblivion, which is fair)

@ZefaGames any chance we can get some vids down the road of current meta decks/future ones too in regards to turn by turn how they should play and what you're aiming to do? Feel like that would be both much wanted and needed! Blue/Steel I enjoy alot as a pairing and i feel like I'm going the normal line plays of Turn 1 pawp/hook match dependent Turn 2 Smee or pawp/develop Turn 3 fishbone or benja Turn 4 hiram Trying to gauge where I end up going wrong in particular there, whether its maybe some over inking at times or my mid to late game choices. Any quick tips and comments in regards to what my mid/later game moves should look like/aim for in a general sense? Appreciate your time on it!

I wonder how the 2 game format will effect the deck power. It seems like the best way to win in such a format is to play the deck that has the highest winrate on the draw since winning both games as often as possible is going to be the biggest decider with it being worth 3x the points of a draw.
@ZefaGames
@ZefaGames 4 ай бұрын
Yea, I think BO2 formatting will definitely have impact on people's deck choices and you'd want the deck that's most capable of going 2-0 since ravensburger decided that 2-0 and 0-2 is some how worth more than 1-1 and 1-1.

I do feel that a lot of people are sleeping on blue/purple. It feels that it has a really solid matchup against most steel decks. Even steelsong feels winnable, granted it is a hard matchup because the deck is so good. It also has that rogue factor since you can hide the fact that you're not red/purple since 70% of the cards are in your typical purple/X deck. My build is similar to Benjamin's but I cut pawp/hiram since I've found you want to control the board early as you can't easily come back once you lose board early.

Thanks for the research and data. The 20% difference basically you make mention in win % of play vs. draw of you, and then later your opponents, is basically the same data though. If you win 20% more of all the matches you recorded when you go first, then the opponents will have lost 20% more when they have to draw. I think what needs to happen from players is examining is there any different way to play on the Draw vs. on the Play? Same cards, same deck, same curve, then maybe there isn't much to talk about; however is that the case or does winning on the Draw come down to whether the opponent gets the cards they need from topdecking or drawing throughout the match, and if they don't then maybe the person going 2nd wins more...however perhaps its completely out of the control of the 2nd player and they can only play their best and hope player 1 gets 1 or 2 cost cards on Turns 8 or 9 where they were looking for bigger cards instead. Maybe if you play first you should quest heavy, play second challenge more. Thoughts or does this make no sense?
@ZefaGames
@ZefaGames 4 ай бұрын
you're right that including the 20% difference from my opponents was a bit redundant as it'll just mirror my own W/L rates. As for play draw, a lot of different factors affect the %s in play draw. Deck archetype is super important. I find play/draw is not as important in matchups like control vs control, but with aggro decks its unreasonably significant. There are definitely different lines you also go for on the play vs draw. For example, I really want to be keeping fire the cannons on the draw but not so much on the play. Sometimes blue steel lines go aggressively for quick whole new world lines on the play, but go more defensive tinker bell sword lines on the draw. But ultimately, being on the defensive in lorcana is hugely disadvantageous because of how lore generation and questing works so fundamentally, the player who is on the draw and on the defensive will have a bad time.
@patrickmcclain5692
@patrickmcclain5692 4 ай бұрын
@@ZefaGames Interesting. I did get hit by a Turn 1 Fire the Cannons last night and I thought of your deck and interview with Lorcana Villain, lol. I wonder if you think this game is Aggro vs. Control type decks, and if Mid Range really isn't too much of a deck type in Lorcana. It would have been nice, even if they are less competitive to have seen the other 6 deck combinations in action, and compile statistics for, even if they would have been losses more than wins. Sapphire/Amber , Emerald/Amber , Amethyst/Amber , Ruby/Emerald, Sapphire/Emerald, and Ruby/Steel. I also would like to see a chart with >> (beats or greater than) symbols that show matchups, like Amy/Ruby > Amber/Amy Aggro, but Amber/Amy beats Ruby/Sapphire, etc. Since the game feels very paper, rock, scissors, right now and locals typically comprise of a lot of similar decks it would be nice to have that information of what are the preferred matchups against each color combination. Great video!

I've seen some crazy mama odie decks go off and get infinite ink but it needs to be built around her pretty heavily. And even then, investing all that tempo to get all the ink, its difficult to find a consistent way to close out the deck before losing. She might have big potential in future sets though.

@@ZefaGamesI agree, I tested sapphire/steel song since last week, and the deck has explosive games but you've to cut a lot of good cards. I worked on at least 5 iterations of Ruby/Steel and the first tourney I ever went to IRL I played R/S. The problems it has are card draw and early tempo. I mean you have to wait for turn 5 to get out Sad Beast, or you could get shift Red Queen out earlier, but it requires challenging. Sumerian isn't horrible if you plan on dying in a lot of challenges, but isn't great, and Go The Distance is a card replacement, but it won't ready non-damaged characters of yours so it basically does nothing except skip to the next card. It doesn't have a lot of good matchups and can get steam rolled by about everything except Aggro. You want to play Hawkins and John Silver with locations, but if you go against Ruby/Amy they are going to wipe out your locations, if you play against Steel/Song they are going to Zeus your Silver away. You can play some good Red removal like Tremaine, Medusa, and Maui but you don't have Amethyst to safely put them back in your hand to replay them next turn. Sometimes due to low card draw you will get hung up at 5 or 6 ink with 1 card in hand, and nothing to play or you start top decking, while your opponent is drawing just fine and continuing to maximize their play options while you have no options.

I hope this message gets back to Ravensburger. The high going first win rate can be mitigated by adding one simple fun aspect to the game -- a sideboard. Adding say a 10-15 card sideboard to your deck build allows players to adjust their deck to counter going second and possibly bad match up. This allows cards not being currently used to get more play, provides enhanced strategy and tactics to the game. Comments?
