Millennia is the newly announced 4X strategy game from Paradox Interactive and C Prompt Studios. I got to play an early access beta build, still very much subject to change. Following on from my last Millennia game video where I gave a deep dive into the screenshots & Millennia trailer, to share my perspective after playing Millennia in an early access beta build (I'm not allowed to show anything from it, but I can speak fully to it). TODAY I answer your burning questions - from how ages work, to combat in Millennia, through what kinds of games (civilization 5, civ 6, old world & humankind are my primary comparisons), the deep tile improvement and local economy systems, and so much more! Thanks for watching! #millennia #gaming #strategy

If the gameplay is fun enough, I can forgive less-than-perfect graphics as a throwback to older games. Especially if it means it will load faster than Civ 6, run on a laptop, or have a lower price point. Basic graphics games that will run on most non-gaming laptops are an underexploited niche.

Thank you for the answer! Yes in Fire Emblem once you move your units into position and order an attack the camera swoops down to show the combat there is nothing more for the player to do other than watch the units exchange blows and hope things go your way so it does sound like Millennia is doing something similar. I like visual details like that they could have easily just had some numbers hitting each other in the main map but I like seeing the combat especially if I've got a new unit or weapon to use!

Considering how many civ clones we've been getting recently, I think it's kinda disappointing that none of them have tried to really innovate on the core design principles. The hex-based maps, the tile improvements, the single unit armies, I really feel like there's more that could be done with 4X but they're choosing the safe route each time.

Just not understanding the random dislike of hex based....what do you want on a turn based board designed game. Moving from squares allowed for more granular combat situations, which is why hex made sense. It was an improvement. What can you go past that?

Regarding the 'picking traits' and metagame choices topic, are there traits that counter others, like if everyone else picks a certain military option or everyone else puts their focus into production, is there a pick where you would be (for example) be protected by war or people punished for overproduction/polluting due to production? Or is that all much more in flux in still in heavy development?

I'm still curious about a question you shared but didn't directly address in this video: Are there reasons why you'd want to go through certain kinds of ages, like an age of blood or age of plagues besides you want to just try it out? Are there bonuses as well as draw backs, or is it more like the aggressive expansion penalties in EU4 that you have to balance?

I'm imagining in an Age of Blood it becomes painfully easy to declare war, effectively having near infinite casus belli, along with faster unit creation and the construction of military structures. At the same time building most civilian tile improvements, non-military research, or whatnot might be double the cost. If you are aiming for war you will make great strides but if your strategy is turtling or playing tall you are going to just be trying to survive until its over. An Age of Discovery might double naval range and allow early deep water access, maybe economic incentives to land-grab trade goods and find landmarks. Whomever jumps on board that train (and whomever sparked the age is ready for it almost by definition) becomes that age's boss to beat. Basically imagine the right age coming up and the youtube personality you are spectating shouting "Boys, lets GOOOOOOOOOOO...." I'm more curious about ones like the Age of Plague or Rogue AI or whatnot which... don't sound great to live through. The sort of thing EVERYONE is just trying to weather rather than take advantage of.

I’d like to play many games to try the ages before giving a definitive answer on that. As I say, I’ve only played one full length game and some tests. The ages are unique, not just in name, but that theme carries through to technologies & their unlocks. There’s also the changes I’ve talked about before in both videos - like the age of blood forcing all players into a state of war, ramping up barbarians, and turning the map a nice ominous red.
@bvav9678
@bvav9678 2 ай бұрын
In the demo I deliberately triggered an age of blood. I picked warrior national spirit and my neighbor picked raiders so we already had a massive war going. They had two southern neighbors though so when I triggered the age of blood they had three wars to fight (even if the other nations didn’t do a lot they where a distraction). Age of blood makes everyone at war with everyone. I consumed my neighbor and was working on the other too when the game timer ran out. Age of plague I can’t think of a tactical reason to trigger deliberately, could always do it just to sow death and chaos.

I find the ages system very interesting, but I think it would be more fun if instead of a single civ setting the age for the entire world, it was more of an expanding thing where you move on to the bronze age alone, then the next age you set the age for you and your neighbors, the next age for your neighbor's neighbors, and so on until you get to a point where the world is all settled and the effect has expanded enough that the entire world moves on together. So that way you can simulate how Europe and China could be having completely different experiences in the 1300s, but since the 20th century the entire world is more or less dragged together from one status quo to the next.

i have a question about the AI. in civ 6, I feel like the weakest point of the game is the poor AI and difficulty scaling. for example increasing difficulty doesn't make the AI smarter, but gives it more bonuses like gold or combat strength. also exploiting the AI's behavior is way to easy in your opinion, how human-like was the AI? did it make smart or repetitive choices? When you increase the difficulty does the AI itself change at all or is it just bonuses? also will the game have multiplayer?

The ages don’t directly effect units, you still have to unlock unit upgrades via research. So while the age the world is in could easily be more modern than the units running around. As grand wars are kind of a large part of 4x games, and the turn based FE style is better suited to small skirmishes with characters and groups. It already looks boring ike in Humankind itself. They should've just went with multiple unique color palettes for each nation that in some way represent the nation. "Millennials", fittingly developed by millennials, is a welcome alternative to Civ, which has been dying since it decided to deemphasize strategy in favor of tactics by switching to the One Unit per Tile system in Civ 5, and has been dead since it decided to become a city builder with Civ 6.

Some more information but unfortunately still virtually no information on combat other than "it's hands off". Things like can you stack units and if so how much can you stack them, what are the kind of differences between different melee and range units and so on. I've said before and stand by it. a 4X lives and dies by how good it's combat is. That's not to say it's the only thing that matters but how good combat is translates into how satisfying is to win through domination which is the main (or should be in any successful 4X) form of victory.
@conradmills4977
@conradmills4977 8 ай бұрын
I would posit that a 4X COULD use a different victory type as it's "main" or "best" victory type, but that it should require conquest to perform effectively. Gathering natural resources for economic victory, cutting down rivals or otherwise reducing the clout of other factions for a diplomatic victory, pillaging foreign artifacts for cultural, enforcing religion, etc.
@Elhazzared84
@Elhazzared84 8 ай бұрын
@@conradmills4977 I don't believe it could. Any 4X (at least that I know of) which tried to not have domination as the main form of victory has failed. To give 2 examples you have both humankind and AoW4 which are pretty bad games as a direct result of it. In fact although not failed to the same degree because it's a big franchise you get Civ 6 which everyone considers significantly worse than Civ 5 and Civ 5 focused much, much more on the domination victory. Granted I don't like any civs cause movings 5 million units and not having tactical combat for me is just terrible game design but that's subjective.

@@Elhazzared84 1. I was pointing out a hypothetical thing, which I see no reason to believe is inherently impossible. Difficult, sure, for reasons you and others have pointed out. 2. The 4X late-game user action bloat could be answered by making an alternative victory condition more viable. If the game doesn't get to the late game, under normal circumstances, then there is no late game bloat. This raises other problems, admittedly. Maybe something like Sins of a Solar Empire, which rarely ever hits the second half of the tech tree, but with military as support for empire rather than empire as support for military. Cities Skylines, but with g3nocide, maybe?

Those gray stone huts look like sh*t. Building styles dont match. Tile upgrades have always model oriented in the same direction, that could be randomized. Devs should play civ5, and beyond earth and take notes. A lot of notes. Diffrent biomes? Are there diffrences between equator and far north? Look at the coasts, where are cliffs like in civ 6? Coast should be more jagged, especially when sea meets hills or mountains. Game should be pretty to look at, those guys are not some indie poor guy sitting in the basement and using stock textures. If they want to succed, better put your heart into fining details. Remember, this is your old, greedy PARADOX. Mediocrity should be severly punished.

as always with paradox games though, decent on release, but for the full experience you need to play it 5 years down the line and pay 500 dollars. i love the idea and look of this game but im definitely gonna pirate it.

Depending on how it works with DLC, buy the base game, and find someone, who hosts a "multiplayer" game, for the dlcs

@@schwingedeshaehers theres plenty of times i want to play the dlc content by myself though, again i'll just pirate it. I usually buy the base game to give paradox some support, but im not paying for the dlc. im usually the one who gets the cracked version of the dlc to play multiplayer with my friends cause none of them want to buy it all either.
