"Milo and Magpies" sounds like an actual good game P. S. I went on Steam and bought it. Saw hundreds of reviews by people from this video. On one hand, I am glad the internet often works this way and helps people discover great things. I also imagine the game developer will not minds couple hundred extra bucks. On the other hand, just imagine how many great things remain hidden, unknown, never to be discovered. P. P. S. The game is also translated into 19 languages o_O

Wow, I played Milo and the magpies before watching this, because I discovered the studio (Rusty Lake) long time ago and played every single game by it ever since. And oh boy, you've just touched the tip of an iceberg, hence Milo and the magpies is just a little game made specifically for kids. This studio made 3 full-length quest games as well as more than a dozen of smaller games (like Milo and the magpies), highly inspired by Twin Peaks, with crimes, blood, surrealism, and a huge plot that every single game is connected too.

Good news about Milo and the magpies, the game pretty much spiked in popularity thanks to this video. (I’m not kidding, if you look at it’s steam charts now you’ll see a MASSIVE spike in the player count a few days after this video released.) Now it’s sporting an ‘overwhelmingly positive’ rating from over 1,500 reviews. All thanks to Joeseppi, the dev even thanked him for bringing their game some much needed exposure.

I could see Finding Fran ending up on a channel like Nick Crowley or MrBallen. “What would seem to be a just a broken, unfinished video game would turn out to be something much, much more sinister.” …like the dev murdered someone named Fran, and every face in-game is based upon real life people that were a part of his life in one way or another.
@TrevorLahey3
@TrevorLahey3 Жыл бұрын
Even the setting would be based upon where the crime was committed, as closely as the dev could manage with their lack of experience. The game could have been created either in the form of an attempt at a catharsis, an act of guilt, a breadcrumb and gesture to be caught, a parading of the horrible deed, or all of the above.

It happens quite often, mainly due to marketing. Too many game devs release their game without any or not good enough marketing. You gotta build an audience as you're developing or get a publisher if you can't get attention by yourself. I agree, Milo and the Magpies was well made, cute and relaxing. Hope it got some attention after this video

@@Readous I do think that today low budget social marketing can be done though, especially for a game as good as Milo. A short trailer video (budget $500 max, could even be free with minimal video editing skills by the artist) posted to the publisher's social media pages would be a start, and the developer would reach out to a number of video reviewers and even just a select group of general gamers with free copies of the game for review (budget perhaps $100-$200), to drum up interest in the niche market for such games. Of course, that's certainly easier said than done. I imagine many reviewers are swamped with offers to review games. Probably the biggest problem is simply taking the time to reach out to enough potential reviewers to find a few who are willing to do it. It would certainly make sense for an up and coming developer to have a game reviewed by an up and coming KZfaq channel though.

Here is me reading too much into this : "a hungry mirror" might be referring to guilt being a reflection of yourself that is gnawing at you from the inside. "trapped in a prison made of clocks" might mean guilt takes time to deal with and also depends on past events to... be guilty. Guilt is a reflection of yourself stuck in the past.

Milo is the passion project of the background artist of the Rusty Lake studio Basically the artist wanted to make a game, and the studio used their resources to make it a reality and publish it under their sister brand Second Maze (they mostly use it to clear up the differentiation with their Rusty Lake series) It's that good because it's been made by a multi-million dollars indie company (according to my estimates) But nobody plays it because it's an artist's game that has no ties with their usual work published under a dead label that they only use to publish small creators' content, that they then promoted for a few days, and that's it

Seeing Milo and the Magpie makes me think, “how many other beautiful video games have gone under the radar simply because no one ever noticed them?”
@milokojjones
@milokojjones 2 жыл бұрын
I'm kinda gonna shamelessly put this here - If someone is looking for a great city builder game, I know about one which mostly gone under the radar in the city builder community - It's called Cliff Empire. It got picked by quite a lot of big youtubers near it's EA release - like around two weeks after - due to the lack of features at the time ( there was not much to make more videos about so ) the game was mostly forgotten soon after. To explain the basic premise of the game - the main gameplay loop revolves around building, expanding and micro managing cities on three cliffs ( and later two more locations ), which forces you to utilize the space you are given most effectively - that's something you can do through researching new technologies, unlocking new buildings, planning effectively the layout of your city, etc. There are also mechanics such as trading, day and night cycle, quests / natural dissasters and more. The game looks - in my oppinion - amazing, the soundtrack is also pretty good, it's running fine most of the time and it has also been translated to quite a lot of languages, which is always a plus. All in all, I think it's a pretty good game for it's price and impressive considering it was basically made by one man. I would recomend checking it on steam or youtube to anyone who is atleast a bit interrested in city building games, perhaps you may find it interresting.

I want to remind everyone that in order to put up a game on steam, you have to pay 100$, as a sort of anti-spam mesure. The creator of every game on the list payed that amount of money in order for their games to be able to be put up on the site. Edit: The worth of $100 is largely dependent from how its spent. A passion project, thats production costs largely outweigh the price of setting up the steam page? not that much in that case. But that is still a lot of money for what is basically an overgrown shitpost. (Wich many of the games on this list are)

"And I must scream" has a story to it. What I got was a young boy trying to get over the grief having lost a lost one, as proven by the voice line "I'll do anything to get her back". I guess the spider boss thing symbolises him trying to escape said feelings of grief and the blue old looking fella is him moving on. In the end when he puts the flowers on the grave stone, that's like proving he's moved on from her death. I do not know why the boss is a spider maybe her death had something to do with it?

I feel like finding fran has a deeper message. You search for fran all over the map. And when you do, what then? You realise how empty and blank the world is. No quests. Just the map. The empty map. But we never saw that before. And even if we did, it didn't seem so bad because we had a purpose. We were chasing and finding fran. We were finding meaning in a world without it. But in a world so bland, what quest is there really? And so we decide to search for fran. A mundane quest to look for a stranger. And yet, the search for fran made those few minutes fly by faster. The world didn't seem so empty then. It only did after we found fran. After we finished our quest. But who's to say finding fran is the end of the adventure? Why not search for someone else, or do another quest? Sure, we don't know if finding another npc with another name would work. We don't even know if they exists. But we weren't sure if fran was real until we found her. Finding fran shows that life is what you make it. Life is empty and meaninful, joyful and tragic all at once. It only depends on how you look at it. It's a matter of perspective. BUT THAT'S JUST A THEORY.
