Jimmy Page's guitar tones on the first Led Zeppelin album are the definition of legendary. I recently had the honor of meeting Mitch Colby, the one man entrusted by Page with reverse-engineering the mysterious modded Supro Coronado, and replicating it for the first-ever Jimmy Page signature amplifier, the Sundragon.
In this video I discuss the uniqueness of Page's sound, get the Sundragon backstory from Mitch... and even borrow one of the amps, along with a Fender Jimmy Page signature 'Dragon' Telecaster to plug into it! I also try out 4 of my main guitars to see how it handles different sounds. It Might Have Gotten Loud.
This was an amazing experience for me as a lifelong Page fan, and I absolutely had to share it. Special thanks to Keith Williams of Five Watt World for inspiring me to get this out.

What was amazing about Zep, was that Jimmy got major guitar playing, recording, and business experience under his belt, and then found and assembled the other band members before anybody realized what was happening. So when the mighty Zeppelin hit the ground running, the band ran circles around the fans, the press, and the concert promotors, to all our enjoyment. Amazing!

When LZ one came out, I was in the fifth grade. A friend was walking down the road, and he had an album under his arm hanging at his side. He was taking this to other homes because he was so blown away that he wanted others to hear it and was walking it around to houses. I managed to get him to come to my house only a block away. I am not kidding - that is how it hit everyone. There was a serious urgency to it that even then with all of the other stuff that was already out or just coming out - understand that was a LOT to compete with. Music was in a rage of stretching and experimenting NEVER seen before. But this record grabbed you by the shirt, pulled you up close - face to face, and dared you to shake it off when you were done. It was the REAL SHIT. Needless to say, I saw LZ every chance I got. I still own ALL of their stuff. All of my band mates from that time in our gray hair still are shaking our heads at how incredible this band was and how fortunate we all were to be there. We had it all musically and didn't even flinch about it. It will probably never happen again, and that makes me kinda sad. We all agree we will NEVER get tired of listening to it. I am 65. That says it all right there.

I remember Led Zeppelin I. I saw the album displayed on a very large round display table in a book and record store. Dozens of the Zep I albums were stacked like a house of cards on the table above which hung a 3-4 foot paper zeppelin suspended on a string which rotated by a small motor at the ceiling. I couldn't resist so I bought a copy. I remember lying on the floor of my bedroom with my head between my stereo speakers listening to the album for days. Wow!

He’s more than a guitar hero, he’s a guitar GOD, almost not even human but decidedly so HUMAN that the humanity of his soul that shines out from his creativity of tone that has a divinity in its capacity to touch the souls of those of us around the globe who still listen after a lifetime of listening. I totally know what it was like to listen to Led Zeppelin (I) when it first came out. I was the first person I know to buy the LP, in early 1969, having heard white label pre-album releases of Communication Breakdown and Good Times Bad Times played on underground FM radio in Washington DC. When the album came out in Jan 69, my guitar-playing friends and I wore the vinyl out in no time, and we saw LZ play on their 1st US tour that same month. It's difficult to describe what a game-changer Zeppelin was for me and thousands of others that year.

Incredible. I was born in the summer of 1970, so that does sound like another world. What’s really crazy is that 20 years later, unearthing those albums was somehow still a revelation. In 1987, Led Zeppelin 1 & 2 sounded downright dangerous.

You hit the nail straight on the head. A lot of there songs are just a groove and everyone is in on it. The riff and the drum beat are one and the same. Seldom do Page and Bonham stray too far away from each other. In some songs, Iike Wanton song from Physical Graffiti, they are joined at the hip. I think that is why Page never really did that much after Bonham passed away.

The record had been out for just a few weeks and I'd never really heard of Plant, and did I hear Plant. His voice boomed. Page was already legendary having replaced Jeff Beck in the Yardbirds. The show was simply delicious. Jimmy mostly played the Tele and that drummer was something to behold. I think we paid four bucks to get in. I caught them almost every time they came to town but never that close.

I didn’t know that is was the same speaker that they finally agreed was ‘the one’ at the time I did it. The interview with Mitch Colby brought on goosebumps. To be entrusted with the holy Flippin' grail of amps is beyond my ability to describe. In 1969 I was ten years old and in the fifth grade when I first heard this album. A kid brought it to class to play during our art class time. The art class was after lunch. He set that album on the counter against the wall first thing in the morning when we came in. I asked him how good is this album. He smiled like the devil took my soul. All morning I kept staring at the album cover. At that time I didn't know a what a Zeppelin was or what the Hindenburg disaster was, but I felt that people died in that explosion in the picture. The image haunted me right there because I couldn't relate to it or understand what was going on. After lunch, we started in with whatever art project we were doing. From the first song I was blown away. Then Babe I'm Gonna Leave you. I never heard such a beautiful powerful song in my life. Then You Shook Me. We guess what people, I was shook! And then those first bass notes of Dazed and Confused. Oh my God! I turned to the kid next to me and said, "This music is scary, and I LIKE IT! And you know what, I have been liking it ever since. That you JB for this Video. After 53 years of Led Zeppelin I thrill every time I hear it.

Hey all, Ignazio Vagnone from Jensen Speakers here. We are SO honored being - small or not so small, you decide - part of this project. I clearly remember when Mitch asked us for some speaker samples to shoot out for "an amp project that is SO incredible I cannot tell you anything about it". And MY astonishment when the Sundragon was announced, learning in that very moment that Mitch picked up our beloved Jensen AlNiCo P12Q as the speaker of choice for the Sundragon, and that his choice was signed off by JP. We were pinching ourselves to make sure we weren't dreaming :) One of those moments that pays you back for all the hard work done to relaunch the Jensen Speakers!

I didnt even know LZ 1 existed until i bought HofHoly ! Led Zep 1 was not really viewed as anywhere near as good as the other albums. Thats the truth of it back in the day. I didnt get a copy of LZ1 until 1978 ! The original album cover only had the nose end of the airship filling the whole front and the lettering was in Torquios . The back cover had the guys in a clear black & white photo not misted like later ones. Ive still got the original album cover and record.

I can't prove it, but I do know Page said in an interview about 1969 that he used a small Rickenbacker amp in the studio for Zeppelin's first album. (I had the privilege of getting one of the first copies of the album in early January of 1969 or late December 1968). I remember Page said "Rickenbacker" because I did a double take and thought to myself (being from America) that I didn't know Rickenbackers made amps as I pictured a Beatles' Rickenbacker guitar in my mind. Maybe it was made by Supro for Rickenbacker? But Page did say a small amp and did not say Valco. I could not be mistaken about that.

Now i get it, when the U.S. made '59 Supro Coronado was broken from the fall on the road , it was repaired by a shop that Jimmy used, the tech most likely used UK or euro parts , it was unintentionally modified..that was the magic.

THANK YOU JB Eckl! When he got his repaired amp back, you can bet Page knew he had a serious studio "secret weapon" on his hands. In 1968, and at that point in his career, he could have tracked the 1st LZ record with a Fender, an AC-30, any number of Marshall models, or any/all of those and more--but that 2x6L6 powered 1x12 had the mojo & versatility. If that repair guy knew what that amp would go on to do, I don't think he could've held his his soldering iron straight! 😉

The first time I heard Good Times Bad Times it floored me. I know where it was, who I was with and what it was played through. There was no Metallica at that time. It was the heaviest thing I had heard up to that point. The stuttering double bass drum hits and the drums themselves were heavier than anything I had heard to that point. It made a deep impression. I had been swimming in a sea of 80's radio up to this point. It was that song, Purple Haze and Jumpin' Jack Flash that changed my world.

The huy you were referring to is Eric Van Lustbader. He wrote the "Ninja" series of novels in the 70 & 80's. Before that he wrote for "RollinStone" magazine. He was the first to describe any kind of music as "Heavy Metal". He was describing the first time he heard Jimi Hendrix's guitar as sounding like "Heavy Metal falling from the sky".

I once, on a whim, brought my Tone Bender MKII Professional into a Sam Ash one day, and figured i'd have a go with it. Well, it turns out they had just gotten the Supro Black Magicks in which replicate the supro Page used for most of the recording of LZ I-IV. I grabbed a tele off the wall, plugged it all in and it sounded literally identical to the record. I can't even begin to describe how it felt. I highly, highly, highly recommend the British Pedal Company's Tone Benders to any Page enthusiast. I bought the OC81D version if anyone is curious. It just has sooooouch versatility. Yummy clean roll offs with a tiny touch of gain, full fuzz, or even metal can be handled by this beauty, it's my most cherished pedal and I recommend it to anybody. It even comes with a certificate of authenticity, and a nice bag to keep it in, good good stuff.

I recently watched an interview with page and the said that all 4 first albums were recorded with his tele because it was more articulate than the Les Paul and it did what he wanted more than that Les Paul. He said he only used the Les Paul he bought from Joe Walsh on stage because it was more suited to reach the back of the arenas unlike the tele.

Just so you all get some background on JB and his Zep relationship, at 17 yrs old he would sit down and figure out all the parts, bass, rhythm, lead and any harmonies, to a chosen Zep track and the next day he would enthusiastically reveal his discoveries and play the songs the rest of us would struggle for weeks if ever to get right lol, he also had cassette mix tapes of every Zeppelin album with intricate hand drawn covers to reflect the mood of each, in short a true and worthy disciple;)

We thought the start was from that and lo & behold it was! It's straight away the gear and the things that were bundled together with amp and string with wotnot and that's how the stuff that wasn't there already began to be very familiar. Wasn't that great?! Everybody thinks he do the Marshal and the Les Paul but that simply wasn't anything about it all and there are surprises - oh yes ! Nobody look sensibly until the picture was revealed to be a lot of things that simply there - how is that? He take that from me with a verysmall amp overdriven with excellent effort and tone that thrills.
