We got our hands on Stihl's smallest professional chainsaw, the MS201C. It is a light weight but yet powerful saw meant for smaller tasks like thinning young forests and cutting firewood. Here is what we though about it.

I love my MS 170, 30cc with 16 inch bar. I've had it for two years. Great for liming and smaller jobs. Probably would say it's my favorite Sthil chainsaw. My MS 251C is a great bucking and firewood saw.

I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle kzfaq.infoUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

I have been using the MS-193 for about a year now and love it for limbing and clearing out dead fall. Getting ready for the summer push here in Alaska. In America the MS-193 and 150 are available. Both smaller.

I am a chainsaw carver and run the rear handle MS200 and the MS201. The MS201 was/is, from the very first, a nightmare. It requires constant carb adjustments just to keep it running. This saw was around $1,000 CDN years ago, and I'd hoped it would have the power to run my toonie tip bar while having the wonderful balance and smoothness from the horizontal cylinder (the reason it looks different than most chainsaws). I no longer would consider running any of these heavy, rev limited "smog saws" (Husky 5__ series included) and now scour the internet searching for pre-xtorq Husky saws to use in my business. Perhaps the automatic carb on the 201C will help (until it malfunctions), but I'd put money on the MS200 cutting circles around it.

I got my 201 with a 14 inch bar. I can not imagine a homeowner buying this saw. They are very expensive here in Canada. Super saw though for professional use. Very happy with this little beast. You must keep up with air filter maintenance, seems to clog up quicker than most other professional saws. BUT, No where as bad as the dreaded 026.

Thats a great little saw, i have the 201t and love having the top handle. I havent modded mine as it does everything i want but maybe sometime down the line ill make it run even faster. I use this saw and my pole saw for the majority of stuff but will pull out my 310 for larger rounds. You can definitely tell the difference from the homeowner to the farmboss to the pro saws.

I have tried almost every brand of chainsaw and while I do like certain aspects about husqvarna and echo chainsaws the best part about the stihl chainsaws is parts availability and the dealer network in North America at least. Still dealers are almost like gas stations they are everywhere and it is extremely easy to get parts for them even 20-30 years after a product was produced. A few years back I fully restored a 028 wood boss and the stihl dealer was still able to get me the parts I needed to restore a chainsaw from the 80’s... I don’t use the 028 anymore but it’s nice to know it still runs like new if I ever need it. Also the price of stihl replacement parts are pretty fair compared to some other brands... usually a brand new carb for a stihl weed whacker or chainsaw is $20-40 and when I went to get a new carb for a echo weed wacker they wanted $80 for it at the echo dealer... So for those reasons I have decided to stick with stihl and stop testing other brands until they can catch up to stihl.

I have 2 MS180. One is set up with 14" bar x .050" the other has an 18" 3/8" lpchain that has really surprised me. If you lean on saw it may bog, but for an all around small saw( my 80+ year old dad wanted light weight saw he could use around farm) it is pretty awesome. I noticed the extra bar length comes in handy when libing without bending over so much

Got 1 at work, i recommended it, in the past i was used to ms200t and basically i chopped respectul trees with it didnt feel like a pocket knife and it got the job done, due restrictions they took the top handles away from us and came with a cheap ass saw for homegarden use entry level, i missed the ms200t wich i used for years, the cheapers saws couldnt do the work like i did before they just lacked power, and im not a fan of there construction. Nowadays im working with the backhandle ms201c, it gets most of the work done and it can easily cut down trees twice the size of the bar, so basically its enough, if u do basic garden work on professional level

I still use my 1974 Poulan S25DA for cutting firewood, 38cc and 8.5lb powerhead with 1/4 pitch chain. Actually my go-to saw, I use it for some rather large projects from start to finish. Of course I have larger saws for the really big stuff beyond 16 inches, my Poulan 306A (59cc) cuts like mad but it's 12-3/4lb, too heavy for me using all day.

Stihl saws are AMONG the very best saws made. They have had problems with ATTITUDE as well as engineering. My grandfather used to say, Don't buy something newly developed. Wait until it is perfected. Wait till the bugs are worked out. I am not bothered by a saw that looks odd. As long as it is strong and reliable. Did you say this saw comes in a top handle model? I would like to see it. And does it have a strong rope ring on the back for climbing arborists? Thank you for the demonstration. And the good narration.

I own both. Got the 261 first. Did not think anything would match it. The 550 is a great saw. Switching back and forth between the saws. Here's what I notice. The 261 has more torque. This means once you get it into the wood the chain is easy to keep moving/cutting. I tend to not cut a lot of air when I cut. Running the 550 you need to stay on the throttle more and keep the revs up. Requires cutting more air. Less torque more speed. The chain is more likely to stop in the cut if you back off the throttle or put to much pressure on the bar. That is the biggest different for me. 55o has a primer bulb. Starts on the second pull. The cold 261 may take 10 or 12 pulls to start. Both saws are great saws. I just notice the differance because I switch from one to another. Hope this helps you out. I own the 201. I love this saw also. I have owned a o26 / 260 these are poor saws compared to the 261. Not worth owning if you are a professional cutter.

Been using ms200, ms201 and now ms201c-m (m-tronic version) for professional pre-commercial thinning the last 15 years There are no better tool for the job when you are lugging the saw along for up to 10hours days and cutting down 500-1000 trees during the day The m-tronic version was a great improvement, as I had a lot of struggle with the first 201. Especially in damp weather or snow Another thing to mention is that the saw looks fragile, but lasts me 2-3 years with heavy abuse and just regular maintenance I use a ms241 for traditional thinning and really feel the weight difference over the day even it looks small on paper, but it definitely got a bit more grunt for bigger diameter trees Great review guys!

I own this saw but mine is a MC T which has a auto timing system. It’s a nice saw except for the very well known oiler issues. The first thing you need to do is turn the oiler all the way up as far as it will go. If you buy one, you will frequently have to take it apart to clear the oiler entire system, as it easily clogs unlike other Stihl saws. It’s a pain to deal with.

If anything this is just as traditional as the upright cylinder design. Many older saws including Stihl units had a horizontal cylinder. Lovely little saw though. Interesting that they went for a clutch -outwards design like a Husky, it brings the bar in a little bit which I guess is important in a very small saw.

Curious how much USD these saws were when they were first made. MS201C? I can’t locate an msrp for that model only the CM. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

African Twin Just for your Information: Stihl is the only company which produces carburetors for chainsaws. So your husqvarna has actually a Stihl carburetor.

I have a cheap chainsaw pole trimmer. It's been awesomeness even on felling 20cm trees haha. But I might upgrade one day to one of these mini monsters and build a log cabin or something just as dreamy. blah blah.

I like the longer pole limb saw for low trimming because I don’t need to bend over. I own the Echo system and it’s just as good as Stihl’s. I have the older PAS260 system with all the toys. I couldn’t run a farm without it and I’m a little old man (72 yrs) and I can handle it.
