Sarah Wilson thought of herself as a relatively healthy eater. She didn't realize how much sugar was hidden in her diet, or how much it was affecting her well-being. When she learned that her sugar consumption could be the source of a lifetime of mood swings, fluctuating weight, sleep problems, and thyroid disease, she knew she had to make a change. What started as an experiment to eliminate sugar--both the obvious and the hidden kinds--soon became a way of life, and now Sarah shows you how you can quit sugar too.

I'm 75 and I quit sugar in 2008 and grain two years later. I was much older then, I'm younger than that now. I had been diagnosed with diabetes and I had terrible gut problems, which were quickly cured after I quit grain and sugar. I also lost 130# effortlessly and I'll not go back any time in whatever years I have left.

Tips that have kept me close to sugar-free for the past several months: 1) Have a stash of sugar-free (stevia & monkfruit/erythritol) cheat treats; 2) Telling dinner hosts I will bring my own dessert (and avoid bread & pasta); 3) Making a large main dish & separate into indiv. servings (as Sarah suggested); 4) Replace sugar intake with healthy fat intake (keeps you satisfied) 5) Try intermittent fasting . . . helps you stick with meals instead of snacking 6) Binge-watch videos such as these to keep you on track and to gather tips

I had quit sugar for about 3 months over 15 years ago and in 2 months time I had dropped 22 pounds effortlessly. I was amazed at how quickly that weight seemed to just dissolve. Along with the other changes that folks have mentioned, mental clarity, happier in general, felt lighter, more energy, slept better, etc. I unfortunately ended up slowly reincorporating it and started feeling less motivated again. I’ve been considering cutting it out again and incredibly this video popped up as I was searching for something unrelated. 🙌🏽

@Liberal Culler The body stores fat and use’s sugars for function .So much so using fat requires a process that requires more energy,so sugars or carbs are a ready fuel . The fat you eat is the fat you wear.

Amazing. I agree with everything she said and I tried it myself, for over a year now, everything regarding my health is better, from my skin, to my hair, to my digestion, to my body fat percentage, to my ability to manage stress, EVERYTHING. I got blood work before and after and everything is balanced and back to normal. The moment processed sugar went out and healthy fats got in my diet, life simply got better. It's insane

I actually started seeing results after something like 3 weeks (the bloating and inflammation went away) and a month after I noticed that my period was really less painful (now it's practically pain free). I am still on no sugar by the way, with some exceptions here and there on birthdays and such :) the rest of the benefits I can't really tell you when they started. The idea is to consider this a life style and not really a diet. The first 2 weeks were harder (because I use to consume a LOT of sugar) but after things got easier and honestly I am not planning on going back :) I hope this helps :)

@@loulousd5443 Thanks, it sounds awesome :) What about starchy foods like potatoes, rice, what about pastry, oats, common fruit? Did you cut everything out? It's just lots of carbs in there. This sounds to me much more difficult than to cut just regular sugary things out.

@@matesssmiss9419 no I didn't cut allll carbs I still have fruits, mostly berries (sometimes I would put half a banana in a smoothie), and during summer I do have other fruits, but not everyday. I still have potatoes from time to time as well, and once again, not very often. I rarely have rice or pasta but I have quinoa and I have discovered a lot of pastas made with quinoa and cauliflower so I have those instead. I know it's hard. But I started by first cutting the abvious added sugars and than slowly transitioned into cutting the rice pasta couscous and breads etc. There are always alternatives out there :) if you can't cut all of these items just cutting the added procccessed sugar already gives results and I do believe it's still better than nothing :)

I used to have horrible leg cramps. For years I suffered. But after quitting sugar, they've completely stopped. I wish I'd been told about this benefit years ago!

I get horrible leg cramps as well. People don't understand how they could be so bad, to where you stretch it out and the cramp won't go away! I thought I was eating healthy, and am only just discovering I'm a sugar junkie. I never knew the relationship between cramps and sugar. This is huge!

I have been zero sugar for two weeks now! I was planning to do a month for health reasons but there is no way I am going back to it. I make all my own food, including mayo and ranch dressing. It is so freaking easy and cheap. Just ordered her book!

I bought your book, followed the detox programme for 3 weeks, so I’m halfway through and I lost a stone in weight, it fixed my broken sleep, I have a lot more energy and my daily headaches had vanished, it reduced my anxiety levels a whole lot and I just generally feel a lot better. I quit sugar for six weeks once. Honestly it was incredible. My whole being just moved up a notch, everything got better. It's quite shocking actually, to see how you're supposed to feel, when you do you realize you've been living like shit all along and never knew. So in this way sugar(bad food in general) is like a curtain, and "hidden" behind that curtain is your optimal self. The real you.

If you get to a point of plateau, consider looking at keto. Carbohydrates become sugar unless you exercise a LOT to burn it off. Congratulations on improving your health 🙂

That's great. I'm wondering why you've only lost 2 pounds though? Curious, what kind of exercise are you doing? If your gaining muscle I then understand why 2 pounds. Best way is to go by your clothes or the mirror. You are on the right path and more will come off soon.

went no sugar and no alcohol a while ago. also prepare most of my own food from fresh produce and meats. People often ask me why I look so young, how I lost that weight, ect. but always a frown when I tell them the truth. I feel better than I did 15 years ago and definitely more healthy, more energetic and can go out and hike all day while people 20 years younger are whining. When I quit sugar my blood pressure went down. My doctor loves my labs when I get my physical. I grew up being one of the fattest in school. One day i decided to get ahead of this and started with eliminating soda, then candy, then I learned to stop snakcing. Stay on course and you will steadily move towards better fitness and a VERY enjoyable life.

My second job is baking pastries and at work I'm asking others in the kitchen to taste the stuff for me because I've sworn off refined sugar and other sugars. I thought it would be harder to resist eating the desserts I make, but I'm in my third week of no sugar and it's actually not bad. I'm not really tempted to eat the sweets.

@colleen whalen Her qualifications are she no doubt looks better, and is no doubt healthier than you. She cites scientific studies and has personal experience of quitting sugar. What are your qualifications and expertise? You thinking somebody is misinformed and actually demonstrating she is misinformed, are two entirely different things. I am Certified by the State of California in Community Nutrition and can work in hospitals and medical clinics performing nutritional coaching and advising. I’m 68 and quit eating sugar and all processed food in 1968 and YES, I am incredibly HEALTHY. At age 68 I am Rx medication free and zero health problems If you think her “qualifications” are being young, physically attractive….then you admit you have zero standards. She sounds as though she is a layperson with no clinical, scientific training. Many of her statements were NOT healthy…she eats lots of saturated fat, coconut oil and that is 90 percent saturated fat There is a great deal MORE to a balanced diet than just eliminating sugar She is a layperson NOT a MD or Registered Dietician nor does she appear to have ANY scientific training…yet another self processed “expert” who got some people to sit in a room while she gave a speech and then posted it on You Tube. Ho him….

I am turning 40 this july 2023. I cut my carbs, sugar and process food intake since march. I feel i am on my 20’s. Dr Robert Lustig said you cannot out run a bad diet and ms barbara O’neil said you genes loads the gone but your lifestyle pulls the trigger. I will hold on to that to the rest of my life. Btw I am diabetic and had hight triglycerides level and now I am on process on fixing it on right foods. On God’s given food to us.

I ate, sweets, cakes, chocolate, ice cream and biscuits everyday for over 40 year. I took 2 sugars in tea and coffee and drink 6 cups a day. I'm 3 weeks in, and I've not ate any of these and I know that I'll near take sugar in tea or coffee again. I will eat some of these things again, but it will be drastically reduced.

Sounds realistic. I am 58 and eaten sugar since I was 5 fir comfort from the brutality that was my childhood. I’m going to start reducing and finding foods to replace. I eat healthy but sugar destroys all my “healthy “

Nice one ! Yep i dropped 16kilos. Once you get over the carb n sugar addiction you tend to get less hungry. Throw in a bit of fasting on top, that gets much easier too. Took me only 3 months !

It does not take eight weeks to eliminate "sugar" (sucrose and added fructose). I did it in one day, felt better the very next day and as little as a week later felt like a new person. A whole range of what seemed like chronic ailments were either gone or in full retreat ... itchy skin, blurred vision, fungal infections, worsening symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, arthritic joint pains, muscular pains and cramps, constant tiredness, difficujlty concentrating and weight gain around the waist despite eating no more calories than I need. I think it helps to make a complete and symbolic end to using sugar (sucrose/fructose). It is like stopping smoking. DIscarding the last pack of cigarettes while it is still half full somehow increases the motivation to keep off them in a way that trying to stop after the last cigarette is gone does not. I guessed that the same might help in giving up sugar. So, despite the apparent crime of discarding food that some people would be glad of I: - emptied the sugar tin (1kg sucrose) into the waste bin, along with a pack of chocolate biscuits; - poured all remaining coca-cola and fruit juices down the drain; - threw out part-used jars of jams and chutneys, - (along with tomato sauce, chilli sauce, mustard and any of the other preparations in my fridge and larder that contained sucrose or added fructose). The only fructose to enter my body since has been from whole fruits, and tha is a small amount that the body processes differently than the massive amounts added to food in the form of HFCS, bnecaus eof the fibre and other chemicals in the fruit. It really is that easy. The clearer head, feeling of well-being, and rapid disappearance of chronic helath problems completely override any cravings. I am now making all my own meals from the basic ingredients so that I know exactly what I am eating. Apart from the immediate health benefits I also find that my sense of taste has improved. I had thought all by ailments and declining sense of taste were due to genetics and getting older. Turns out they were not. I do not care about any arguments going on in the world of food scientists, doctors, food companies, medical researchers and nutritionists anout whether the evidence really confirms what Dr. Lustig is saying. Nor do I care that my anecdotal account is not scientific evidence. The simple fact is that I cut out sugar, all at once, on one day, have not missed it, and have transformned my health as a result., and that is what really matters.

There’s a great little book on natural healing written by an older man who cured himself of a number of maladies without medical intervention, called My Physician, Myself. I read it a couple of years ago but lost my copy. I’m going to Amazon right now to order one and be more careful with it. It’s more than worth the read. You might look into the work of Luigi Cornaro, a Venetian nobleman who lived to be 102.

Ex-sugar addict here. I recently hired a personal trainer/meal planner to help me track my macros. And yes I weighed all my meals. Needless to say, after two weeks, I quickly dropped 10 lbs by omitting sugar.

Sugar and certain carbs contribute to candida and in combination with other toxins cause leaky gut. It takes the microbiom about 90 days to change its bacteria compilation and also for the liver to regenerate.

I am currently on Day 16 of a no-added sugar fast. I am also doing plant-based at this time. Mental clarity is definitely a plus to this. My skin has cleared up so much! It’s amazing how much sugar is in items. I was gonna grab some wild rice, and even that had sugar in it. Lol. But, seriously, taking time to read labels and see what’s actually in the items that you buy is really necessary. I am so happy with this no sugar added journey. The plan is to go for 21 days, but I honestly want to make it longer.

@@Btn1136 You do not need animal fat for anything. There is plenty of good fat in things like avocados, even olive oil if you want to go there, but there is absolutely no need to have animal fat. What made the difference for me in very quickly reducing sugar cravings, was providing COMPLEX carbohydrates by means of high complex foods - mostly the whole grains like millet and kasha made a difference, as well as vegetables and beans. Omega 3's can be found in fish if you want to eat fish but you can use flaxseed for that, or use algae based supplements.

I haven't eaten anything refined for 2 weeks and having severe headache, depression, anxiety and craving for sugar. I know it takes lot to detox your body and year old habits are very difficult to leave. Although, I see some positive changes in me but this journey is going to be really difficult when you have entire family which feeds on sugar and you are the only one in a withdrawal mood.

I don't think it's "detoxing" to stop eating sugar. I notice people using this word as if they're addicts when speaking of certain types of food. The problem with seeing sugar or gluten or even carbs (I've seen crazy people saying they are "detoxing" from one of the three macronutrients humans require for good health) is that these things aren't drugs. You probably will feel unwell when you completely eliminate a ready source of easy fuel and force your body to abruptly use more complex way of fueling the body. If you were eating sugar all day before you abruptly stopped, then of course your body will react to that. It doesn't mean you're detoxing.

I quit thyroxin and replaced with potassium iodide. Less expensive, no prescription needed and much more effective according to my blood tests. I have completely restored my thyroid function with that one supplement.

I got hashimotos had 0 hormones being produced. Only noticed tired all the time and was sleeping 14-15 hours a day. The doc said with 6 months I probably would be in a coma. Not once did the doc say anything about sugar. Since I started fasting and reduced sugar my arthritis pain gone feeling more energized after couple of weeks once Sugar crash was gone.

I began cutting sugar and refined carbohydrates from my diet about 15 years ago. Best thing I ever did for my health. People would be surprised how many addictions are more manageable after giving it up. Whether it be smoking, drinking, and/or drugs. People are living in a sugar crash/fog and don’t realize it and take up other addictions to compensate. My body stays lean and I have plenty of energy. I recommend it regardless of what age anyone is. It’s not natural to the human diet in high amounts. It’s completely a result of the industrial revolution in the last 100 years.

This is quite the conincidence as I stumbled upon this video and low and behold I bought your book several years ago. U fascinate me. I am addicted to sugar but I try to manage it by not keeping sugar treats in my home. I realize how there is sugar in everything we buy but I am the type that prefers making my own therefore I rarely buy premade meals as I don't know what I'm ingesting. Everyone needs your book! I cook for my dogs and give them the same good quality butter I eat. My Golden Retriever lived to be 18 and my other two dogs are on their way to a long life too.

@@danieljameshenrywilkes Hi Daniel, My top recommendation is to stop eating chicken!! That's all he ate for 30 years. I switched him to kosher Turkey breast. It's available at Trader Joe's and is so much healthier. Chicken contains lectin in the muscle and it's really bad for you. Also, eat organic when it comes to veggies and fruit.

To quit anything I have to read so many labels that it's like being back in school. I just skip everything until i get to the weight I want to be at. Sugar is everywhere and it's impossible to quit it without in depth research. I must say that's a great job quitting sugar, incredible.

I never read labels because I learned how to cook with fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes. Manufactured food is unhealthy even if it doesn't have sugar, it will have excess sodium, preservatives, too much oil, artificial colors, etc.

I've recently been diagnosed with Type 2 and have immersed myself into learning as much as I can about it, so running across this video is a real gift. Quitting processed sugar is the real win, getting natural sugar from fruits isn't nearly as bad and can have huge health benefits (dried blueberries for example). There have been studies that have come out since this was recorded so doing some of your own research is always a great idea. Take care, all.

BS. Dried fruit is concentrated sugar. "Natural" sugar is just as bad for you as refined sugar; BOTH will spike your blood sugar.

I use frozen berries. My blood now is the same as non diabetic. When I trained as a nurse in the 60s We were told all diabetics MUST eat a low carb diet. Peas are a no no, They can spike your sugar. I had no education on diet or any help. It's only my memories from the 60s training and YT that has got my blood under control. All things considered it's probably best I got no education from them. In the UK it is only in later years that the diet attitude is eat what you like and take more insulin. Type 2 they expect you to keep bloods under control but won't give you any testing equipment. It's infuriating. not all of us are wealthy enough to buy it.

To quit sugar, you need to address all of the foods that turn to sugar and all processed foods. You need to first reverse insulin resistance (which is why reducing sugar is so powerful) and while all of these things are great, I think results will vary based on the individual. Get your A1C checked and your fasting insulin level not just fasting glucose.

I'm 22 minutes in, and it's the second time I feel the urge to hit the like button, it's so eye-opening. Thank God I'm seeing it on a January 3rd, now I have a chance to give it a clean start, and for the very first time in my life (36) I'll try something out, and it's reducing my sugar intake. I'll channel my sugar cravings into ordering teacups instead and drink tea from them! Also thanks for confirming I can still have milk coffee! XD My survival will have better odds!

Loved how you explained the way sugar isn’t just sugar granules but it’s inside of foods, thank you Sarah. Hope the Thai food authority listens in 😊 as Sydney Thai cuisine used to be the ‘thing’. Even coconut water these days have added sugar, and those plant-based milk not sugar but sunflower or canola oil to thicken it with just 3% of whatever plant it promises on the carton advert. For eg almond milk.

I am on day 13 of detoxing from sugar. Symptoms include weakness and fatigue, no energy, depression (bad for about 4 days) Insomnia, irritability, sugar cravings. I watched a movie on you tube called That sugar film. Several people say it can take a month to totally be free from all symptoms of sugar withdrawal. One person I think said 2 months. Some people struggle less but this is my experience.,,,and a friend was about the same. Day 13 I am mainly just weak and tired.

Those symptoms go away by taking a binder, like zeolite or clay (LUVOS). Aloe vera pure and also charcoal is also helping.

IAm sure She's talking about the general physical detoxing/quitting of the sugar. It could take much longer for some depending on how deep they were into sugar, how huge the sugar driven communities are that live inside them. Try juicing fruits / vegetables first 3 days you might feel some headache. Day 4-5 and up you'll never look back. Don't worry about sugar from the whole fruits, although try to keep it more vegetables than fruit. 80/20% down to 60/40%. (vegetables/fruits). Your body will thank you, and you can thank me later 😊 good luck.

I call sugar "white death", try to avoid it when ever possible. Had so many health issues I thought I was dying. Mental fatigue, blurry vision, achy bones, felt like I was dragging chains around. It was only when I saw some reasearch on sugar and it's long term effects I began to realize sugar was a culprit. It's not easy giving up sugar, it seems to be in mostly everything, but I can say I feel 100% better for it. One of the reasons there are so many people who are diabetic and over weight.

I was told by a doctor that no women should give up sugar in its natural forms before the menopause. It is needed by the body if you still menstruate. That's maybe why you had a problem giving it up.

There's a lot of useful information in this lecture. However, I don't like the fact that she doesn't label glucose as something dangerous that contributes to diabetes and other health issues. Here in Europe we mostly use cane sugar as added sugar, which is glucose, while on the other hand Americans use high fructose corn syrup, and we both have tremendously high rates of diabetes, heart disease, and other diseases and illnesses.

I’ve gone from totally plant based diet in 2012 to carnivore 2022 and still have not been sick for over 10 years. The common denominator is no prepackaged foods. to very few carbs of all kinds. Not even the sniffle’s …. it’s been amazing!!!

There’s a great little book on natural healing written by an older man who cured himself of a number of maladies without medical intervention, called My Physician, Myself. I read it a couple of years ago but lost my copy. I’m going to Amazon right now to order one and be more careful with it. It’s more than worth the read. You might look into the work of Luigi Cornaro, a Venetian nobleman who lived to be 102.

I went a step further and quit caffeine at the same time. Day 2-3 was terrible. On day 5 I started to notice more stabilized energy levels. By 7 I already notice a better complexion and less inflamed face skin. I might have 5-10g of added sugar a day or less, but nowhere near close to the 250g or more, I was having previously.

If you appreciated this video, you may also want to know that while marketing makes you think brown sugar is more natural than white sugar, the only difference is that brown sugar is turned to white sugar by adding phosphate! And when it comes to gut health, brown and white sugar have similar effects!

So why does Google say this : Why is brown rice syrup bad?  It is much higher than table sugar (GI of 60-70) and higher than almost any other sweetener on the market. If you eat rice syrup, then it is highly likely to lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar. In a typical lifestyle, sugar is consumed as part of everyday tea, mother made sweets, icecreams, chocolates, ketchup, softdrinks, port wine. In my opinion all the mentioned items can be avoided without calling it a huge challenge. The trouble part is white potatos and white rice, which also need to avoided for sugar detox. My grandfather used to eat sorghum bread and leafy vegetable twice in day and 365 days in a year. Never ate rice or potato. He is my hero for this reason.
