I did it for 10 months, and my curls are the same. I stopped relaxing ten years ago, the sulfates cleaned my hair better and the silicones helped with detangling. Plus becoming too obsessed with reading ingredients at teh store became a headache after a while. I mostly just use sheamoisture, cantu, Camille rose naturals, devacurl, NYM and ouidad my curls are better now.

I love the CGM as much as the next girl... BUT if we have people thinking they have failed.. Feeling like they don't have pretty hair because this method doesn't work for them, we've lost sight. Curly girls should know best that ALL hair is different. A one size fits all method is crazy!!!! CGM has amazing tips tricks. Etc. But do what works for your hair.

The problem is mostly that this girl really didnt do any research, has no idea where cgm comes from, or the whole point of it, and mostly that she only tried it for about 3 weeks doing the same thing the whole time and wasnt giving it a full chance. 3 weeks Is so far from enough time to reverse over a decade of daily heat styling and years of chemical color changing.

*implies her hair looks terrible when that's exactly my hair texture and i was admiring it That aside, co-washes is a technique usually for black hair because afro textures have a harder time holding onto moisture. The thing with the curly girl method is that there are different techniques depending on your ethnicity, race, texture, etc. A tip a 3c girl gives or products recommended doesn't mean it's gonna work on thin 2b/2c hair. Another thing, a lot of curly hair products such as Cantu are specifically made for black hair in mind so its most likely going to weight your fine wavy hair down, so i'm not surprised it didn't work for you. I don't think you failed. I just don't think you were using the right products for your hair type.

I have been struggling with the curly girl method for 10 months. I have modified the method for my needs and my curls. I brush my hair after the shower AND after applying my products because my hair gets tangled easily as well. I think the hair loss seems more intense because with curly hair the hair doesn’t just fall out like it would when your hair is straight. When it’s curly the hair gets trapped in the curls. I do love the deva curl line and it’s been amazing for me. You haven’t failed and You’re doing just fine, woman! I love your curls. P.s. there is nothing wrong with using your diffuser. I watch a lot of curly girl channels and they diffuse as well. 💁🏻

Yeah, major shedding is normal with curly hair. You lose around 100 hairs a day, and if you don't brush your hair every day, the shed hair just wraps around your curls and stays there until you comb it again. Unless you start losing big chunks at a time, its nothing to be concerned about. I have heard that oiling your scalp and taking Omega 3 can help cut back on shedding, but I haven't noticed a huge difference. But JCBO does help your hair grow faster, so that's a nice bonus lol

I’m confused you said when your hair is straight Do you know your hair type If you have really wavy hair meaning like 2a or 2b maybe you should just go back to your normal routine. Sometimes wavy or curly hair acts like straight hair and needs the same products even though it is textured Also your hair is thicker or curlier than I just mentioned maybe you need a less harsh sulfate or a silicone which rinses out with water No matter what works remember your hair is your hair and don’t care about what others think and the methods people say you should do

I followed the CGM for almost 2 years but recently I’ve broken a few rules and have been using silicones. And my hair LOVES them. I almost wish I had never heard about the CGM because my hair looked fine before and I always embraced my curls. Once I started the CGM I became obsessed with reading ingredients and I’m just sick of it. I also wonder how much money these companies have made off of people by scaring them from “forbidden” products.. it’s all kind of gotten silly for me and I miss simplicity. If you want to use ingredients that aren’t approved according to a method that one person created, then do it. All curly hair is different, and the CGM isn’t a one size fits all (as much as people insist) it also isn’t mandatory to follow. It’s almost freeing to slowly break away.

I agree, even though I do find my hair prefers silicone and sulphate free. I doubt everyone in the curly community ALWAYS follow the CG method to a T, heck even I don't. What saddens me is when people feel they've "failed" because a set routine that worked for one person didn't work for them and so they need to change up a bit. Like I live in India (humid nation galore), so I can't cowash, and use a low poo. I also use a harsh sulphate shampoo once a month to clarify. And my gel has a water soluble silicone in it. People haven't failed when they can't stick to one routine all the time. They just modify it to suit their own hair needs.

Stephanie Christine I currently really like the OGX curl defining cream (it’s in a blue bottle) it doesn’t have silicones but it does have mineral oil. I also recently tried the Garnier Fructis curl butter cream leave in as a styler and I liked it. It made my hair feel light like I had no product in it. I personally don’t like the feeling of a ton of product in my hair. I also tried a silicone conditioner and my curls actually were curlier the next day. I think those ingredients are fine in moderation, but before cgm, I never had a problem with build up. I also have finer hair, but it is thick.

the real doubt about curly hair is to me is, does you all need that much product? why you need to pay for all that "goodness" that are natural but they just add oil to a hair does need water?, why are those product so small in comparison to average products?. I have asked a los of curly hair people about their rutines and they said that they just shampoo and conditioner every 2 to 3 days and just use a leave in conditioner or the regular conditiones without rinse, and that all. They are not buying product that came in smaller container, they are not using 3 different type of gel, or spray conditioner, or twist up. And their hair looks better than mine.

So I saw some comments about people calling her hair wavy and other people telling those that it is wavy because it’s damaged and she was born with curly hair. I just wanna say mostly when you have lose hair like hers, it doesn’t mean that it will stay like that. You hair structure changes about every 7 years. I know people who were born with curly hair and now have almost completely straight hair and never used alot of heat. Im not saying her hair is not curly nor am I saying that her hair is curly. I honestly don’t know. But just because you were born with curly hair does not mean you’ll have those types of curl forever. Hair changes.

i have been on the CGM for years and I just wanna say that, diffusing your hair IS NOT cheating as long it is at low heat or cool air. Also, I only comb my hair when it is wet. I would also suggest that you style your hair wet up side and down. It creates more volume. It seems to me that you need to clarify your hair once per month. I have low porosity hair so I need to do that, or else my hair get´s limp, looses the shape and volume. You etiher shold use a CGA claryfier or do a final wash (with sulfates but no silicones or mineraloils in it.) It brings my curl out and back to life! I would suggest that you taking my tips and not give up on the CGM just yet, sounds to me you are in your transistion state and that it is when it´s the hardest. So try to not to cheat when it comes to CGM approvied hair products and ingredients :). You also need to find out your hair porosity and moisture vs protein balance. I have low porosity as I said so my hair dosen´t like heavy protein like wheat, but plant extracts and amino acids is okey! :) I use Lush - Jason and the argan oil schampoo bar. It has sulfates but It dosen´t feel like too drying for me. I would just tell you to give it at go and DON´T give up when it comes to CGM approved products. It is okey to style your hair time to time but DO NOT give up on the ingridents as I said. Believe me - It is worth is. And also, silicone and glycerin free lube helps with frizz! :)

What you won’t see from KZfaqrs doing the Curly Girl method that your hair stylist knows...if you highlighted or porous hair, silicons are good for your hair. I know, sacrilege in the community! It shouldn’t be in the top 3 ingredients, but if it’s the fifth or later ingredient you’re good to go. It’s a bit of extra protection your hair needs. Shea Moisture is amazing for walking that line and is about 1/3 the cost of Diva Curl line. You can use clarifying shampoo monthly to rid any silicon build up. You didn’t fail. You have been bullied! You can use a diffuser every day if you use cool settings and lower speed. It will cause zero damage. CG is a place to start, but every head has different hair. You should ALWAYS use what works for your lifestyle.

European, color-treated (especially highlighted) hair is too fine for strictly co-washing. That’s why you’ll see lots of “low-poo” options or clarifying shampoo days every two weeks or monthly depending on your product build-up. It’s no wonder you found yourself running back to familiar shampoos and conditioners. This is why it’s so important to know your hair porosity and thickness, texture and curl pattern. What works for thick 4C hair is far too heavy for your hair and will seriously weigh it down, causing it to be limp and lifeless. You’re already doing some great things! A weekly hair mask is wonderful. If you love color, Olaplex is your best friend and partner in crime. It multiplies the protein bonds for added strength and bonus aids your natural texture. How often are you washing your hair? My hair is so dry I can co-wash forever and never bother with shampoo again. I just don’t produce hair oils. My mother doesn’t sweat at all. It’s a medical condition. This doesn’t mean you can’t wet to refresh. Depending on oil production and workout routine, along with conditioning and hair masks, you may find you need to wash with at least a “low-poo” option twice a week or just continue using your own shampoo and conditioner, but shampoo less often than you used to and only condition ends of your hair. A great body building tip is wash and condition with your head upside down in the shower. Bring your styling products into the the shower, because NO-ONE wants that mess all over them! I feel you! Do all the brushing and styling products and finger curling upside down and t-shirt plop your hair for as long as you can. After your hair is dry, you can use the same t-shirt to break the cast, leaving you with softer fuller curls.

I think we have really similar hair types so I have a couple suggestions if you’d like. :) my hair looked like yours when I started. I’m a year into the curly girl method and my hair is much curlier and very consistent now. If you have fine hair....just use shampoo! Lol it will get weighed down if you don’t. I like the nym curl talk shampoo which is cg friendly. Also, if you have fine hair, I think less is more. I just use a leave in conditioner and gel. Once a week I deep condition. I use the curls blueberry bliss leave-in and I use the ouidad tress effects gel. I used to love the deva curl one until I tried the tress effects and omg 😱😱😱. When I’m in the shower I flip my hair upside down to rinse out my conditioner (deva curl one condition). I use a wide tooth comb or Debian brush at this time. Then I take a nickel sized amount of leave in and smooth it over my hair and then scrunch. I’m still bent over with my head upside down while I do this. Once that is well distributed I will asses if I need more water in my hair and stick my head under the water for a second if I do. Then I get a palm full of the gel and smooth it over my hair and squish/scrunch it. At this point I turn the shower off and gently stand upright. I use one of my husbands t shirts to scrunch/towel dry my hair before drying my body and getting out. I can’t stand if it’s drippy! Then I either air dry or diffuse :) I hope some of this is helpful!

Fantastic tips! This is what I do and it's the best takeaway instead of changing your life. My tips: tons of water and conditioner, never let it hit your roots, scrunch with a towel and peace out. Any more than that and you lose me!

You didn’t fail! You’re just doing what makes you feel best in your hair! I’m not the kind of person that enjoys styling my hair (cuz it takes me 17 years) so that aspect isn’t an issue for me lol but if you enjoy it I don’t think it should be taken away from you!! I do touch my hair all the time and wear it in tight hairstyles so In that case, I’m cheating too lol also what you said about hair loss, if anything I feel like I lose less hair honestly because I’m not pulling on it constantly.. and Different things work for different people but for me I don’t apply any of the products to my roots, I find I get a lot more volume that way... I do love seeing people I’ve followed for years embrace their curly hair ☺️😘

I know how you feel. I tried the curly girl method. But, I have fine hair (but a lot of it) and it just made my hair weighted and gross. I didn’t feel clean and my hair lost luster. My hair use to be really curly and I always took ridiculously good care of it. It started to limp out and fine out when my lupus/Sjogren’s became active. Full on curly girl method isn’t just for everyone. I still use a modified version of curly girl and it works for me. I have texture and volume and some days I have pretty curls and some days I have waves. It’s whatever my hair is feeling.

You are correct about hair loss. Once our hair is dry we don't brush or comb so it seems like we lose more. Also keep in mind that your health issues and medications and hormones can drastically change the texture and curl patterns. You may not end up with the same curly hair that you had when you were younger. I don't do "the curly girl method" but I do use products designed for curly hair. I diffuse, I can't stand wet hair on my back and I don't want to go out with wet hair either. YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE!!!!

Mallory Cornelison I second Brandy. You didn’t fail anything. It’s not for everyone. Some are die hard adherents but most are not. Most find something in the middle that works for them. I learned a lot of tips & tricks that help keep my hair healthier. Some of it I knew but had gotten lazy about. One of the biggest things for me was getting back in the habit of doing regular protein & deep conditioning treatments. That + cutting way back on SLS shampoo has helped tremendously. I used to shampoo every day or every other day but for the last several years I’ve used shampoo once, maybe twice a month. Not even that since I’ve been using the Deva Curl Build Up Buster. It’s foaming conditioning washes or milder/low poo’s until then. Others have different needs. As long as you can take away some useful info, it’s all good!

I love how you leave in your bloopers, and the footsteps moment cracked me up!! I'm with you. I love hair products. And if I use ANY hair product repeatedly, my hair stops responding. But if I "shake it up" a bit and try new things, then it like revives my hair. And I get bored with my hair being the same style. For the most part, I try to go without heat and stay natural as much as possible. My hair is colored and damaged and I have just started this journey to get better curls. But I don't follow the method like some of the hardcore curly girls has. And I AM losing my hair!!!! What in the world? I'm hoping it's like you said and the fact that we don't brush it as often. I absolutely LOVED you in this video! Honest ,raw and candid. Ok, being a very curly girl myself. I do NOT follow the CG method. Firstly, I deal with humidity most of the year so the Deva products do not cater to those needs at all. Frankly, nothing seems to cater to those needs. Humidity is the arch nemesis for those with curls. And if you have porous hair, even worse.🙋🏼‍♀️ I MUST diffuse my hair bc like you, I loathe having soaking wet hair on my neck and shirt. Nope, nope, nope. Plopping, uuummmm....no. Again like you, my curl has a pattern and this method doesn’t work well for my tighter curls, for my liking anyway. Especially up by the root area. No volume no definition. Just no. For wavy girls, maybe. But not this chic. Heck, I’m still learning how to tame this mane and I’m 46! Anywho, great video. 😊💕👌🏼

Hi from India (specifically Mumbai, humidity galore!) A good gel that forms a cast really helps with humidity, I find. I airdry till a cast forms and then sleep on it. Have beautiful, frizz-free curls in the morning. I also cheat and sneak a water soluble silicone in my gel (price for affordability)

We all cheated in the beginning. Please just watch videos from people with your hair type, I mean your hair type now. Look at the curly Susie's videos. Forget the finger coiling in the beginning. It took me 3 months to get beautyful curls. You use way too much product. Don't use both in the beginning WaveMaker and believe in. Oh my God, forget the Denman brush in the beginning. What you need in the beginning is deep treatments, first for moisture and also protein after all that damaging. You have to keep patient. I'm in CGM for 1 year now, and I'm still figuring out what works. It took at least 3 month to get nice results. Please hang on, your hair will become more beautiful you will see.

As everyone said, you can't "fail" unless you stop caring completely. CG is just a series of methods that you need to test and try for yourself and fine what works. I personally hate all Deva products and only use my fingers to brush my hair while my conditioner is in - if I brush product through it just seperates my curl clumps. I always diffuse my roots to give extra volume. It's been a year and I am still learning new things about my hair. I hope you give yourself time to explore your own methods and find what works best for you!

One month in to the CG method I broke. I didn’t like how flat my hair was laying against my head and my curls looked limp. I quit for awhile, but I read a lot on the curly girl subreddit and decided to switch up my routine. I’m two months in and I’m starting to really love the way my curls look. It’s really hard to stick to when you’re used to styling your hair daily and actually enjoyed it. If you ever do decide to go back, as far as I know diffusers on low settings are totally CG method approved. That brush you’re using might be a part of the reason youre having an issue too. I didn’t catch when youre using it but if you want to keep brushing only use it when theres conditioner in your hair. So once you get your conditioner in your hair brush it out and once its tangle free “squish” your hair upward to start bringing back your curl pattern. I do that same thing but after I finger comb and it works well. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

You haven’t failed! Ive been experimenting with CG for 3 years (finding things that don’t work still). First, figure out your hair porosity. That will help you find products will work best for your curls. It also looks like you’re using too much product. That will weigh your hair down worse. With limp curls, you may need a protein treatment. Further, diffusing is not cheating. Just don’t have it too hot. Keep trying!

It seems sooooo hard to do every little thing, plus I have damaged colored hair and live in the deep South where it is super muggy at all times which means, super frizz! Not a cute look! And I have a big garden that I am working in daily in 100 degree weather so I just cant baby my hair and let the weeds take over. I really enjoyed your video and I think you have gorgeous hair! My hair is very similar. Color treated, fine and wavy (can be curly with the right cocktail of products). I've been on again/off again the CGM for a couple of years. I am now back on because my hair was recently highlighted blonde and the non- CGM products were drying out my hair/building up/destroying my curl pattern. Anyway, I too have tweaked the method here and there in order for it to work better for me, and I will share with you some of my modifications/product recs to see if they work for you. :) I love Deva Curl and use One Condition (in shower, as a leave in and mixed in a spray bottle with water for refreshing. I'm completely obsessed with how this conditioner smells) and the Light Defining Gel. Another brand that I LOVE is Mop Top. I use the Gentle Shampoo (it's free of all bad stuff, but still has a low lather which I prefer) Daily Conditioner and Curly Custard - they all smell so freaking good. The other brand I always have in rotation with Deva and Mop Top is Bounce Curl. I use the Curl Enzyme Clarifying Shampoo (again, free of all bad ingredients, but is a low lather clarifying shampoo) the Super Smooth Conditioner and Light Creme Gel - all recommended for fine hair and smell amazing. None of these products weigh down my hair. I rinse my hair upside down and squish in the conditioner (squish to condish), which gives body and deeply hydrates my hair. I comb with a wide toothed comb in the shower while head upside down. I use a paper towel to dry the excess water. I do not put product in soaking wet hair while in the shower. I pin my damp hair up while I put makeup on, then I refresh with water to make wet and add my product, scrunch with a t shirt and let air dry. I scrunch out the crunch about an hour later and my waves are happy!!

Some of the hair products I hate(gel from Shea Moisture).😭I love the Deva Curl gel but it's expensive man. I'm using Aloe Vera gel and it's working pretty good. Also the Shea Moisture Strengthen & Restore Styling lotion. I feel like I've spent more money on trying this CGM than I have on anything else.😂 Yes, and a lot of my hair is falling out when I brush it in the shower! But I'm going to continue the CGM a little longer to see if I have anymore changes.

Just found your channel, I've been doing the cgm since march. My hair still gets frizzy, it doesn't look great everyday. But I go by the bless this mess thing. The losing the hair thing is for several reasons, one is yes because you aren't brushing your hair unless you are in the shower so you'll get what feels like a crap ton of hair coming out and two with curly hair the hair you naturally shed doesn't fall out of your hair like straight hair because it gets caught up in your other hair. Id suggest on days you want to wear your hair curly to Clarify your hair with a shampoo, rinse Put on a hair mask for 20 minutes with a plastic cap to trap the heat, rinse Put in a light leave in conditioner, I'd recommend As I Am, while still in the shower with wet hair Finger detangle then bend forward flipping your hair in front of your face and use a wide tooth comb to comb your hair in that direction, then squish to condish, this will cause your curls to clump together. While still bent forward add a gel using the praying hands method to gently distribute the gel then squish to condish again Grab your turbie twist wrap your head up When you are ready to diffuse your hair just use low heat and medium air for about 30 seconds each section, turn off the hair blower before you move it to the next section and don't turn it on till you have it in place. (Stops it from frizzing as much) Then just bounce around your head till it's like 75 percent dry. Air dry the rest of the way then scrunch out the crunch. Use whatever products you want, whether they are cgm approved or not lol it's your hair, just remember to bless the mess

The water in your area is an issue too. Hard water or soft water. It makes a difference.

I agree that curly girl methods are more of a lifestyle. You have beautiful wavy hair. Use your Deva and diffuse. I personally couldn't wear my hair naturally without diffusing. No heat styling generally refers to no flat irons, curling irons or wands. Deva Curl has an amazing diffuser. My hair was over processed too and required a protein treatment monthly to revive my curl pattern. Everyone told me to deep condition my fine hair. That just made it stringy. 3 weeks is only the beginning of a CG journey. Most sad it took a year 😳 I get board wth my hair styles so I broke the rules too!! Keep up the great job with your channel.

So maybe not a journey, more like a long weekend. Or maybe a road trip. Thanks for this video. I struggle between the method and Just wanting my senior year curls back. 😂

Can you please tell me what you used on your lips in this video? I couldn't find it listed in your face makeup. Thanks and, by the way, your makeup is gorgeous!

I highly suggest you talk to people on the Curly Girl subreddit or the NaturallyCurly website. Many people with varying routines will be willing to help you out, and many of them also use silicones and sulphates in their products, so you can get better help from them. I find that the feeling that you "failed" only comes when you haven't spoken to enough people with varying routines or have only read the book. The community was what kept me going in the early months when even my own mother didn't encourage me to try :)

You can use a diffuser with the Curly Girl Method on a low heat setting. In The Curly Girl Handbook by Lorraine Massey (which is where the Curly Girl Method comes from), Massey actually suggests using a diffuser as a way to dry your hair

It takes months to see your hair going back to it's natural beautiful state ESPECIALLY if you have extreme dye and heat damage. Trims to keep cutting off the damage. Deep condition silicone free and sulfate free. And a shit ton of patience

I quit too-I hated putting products in soaking wet hair, how it took all day for my hair to dry and I missed the slip that silicone conditioners gave my hair. I’m with you-and I tried for six months!! Now I do whatever I feel like doing, with whatever products I want and I’m much happier!

Not trying to change your mind, because you're a smart girl, and I know you've made up your mind. But here are some tips for when you do decide to wear it curly! 1. Try squish to condish, it's wonderful! 2. Put your products in upside down. 3. Use the Denman brush to create clumps (pass through small sections twice and your clumps will come together.) 4. Apply your products upside down, with praying hands first, and then once everything is added, scrunch in your gel! Hope that helps for your future curly days!

Emily Brumback Minus the brush that’s exactly what I’ve been doing , using some products not necessarily CG approved, and I almost died the first time I did it when I saw the curls. The technique I think is the kicker
