This is a video I’ve wanted to do for some time now but the weather has been against me. A bikers nightmare, running out of fuel or simply suffering from severe fuel anxiety. It needn’t be the case if you do this simple experiment.
Please feel free to leave a comment down below and I will respond to any questions/comments etc.

Great video Steve. You mention coming down to Cornwall, if you want some 701 company, or a local guide to show you around let me know. I’m down near Falmouth and know the byways and TÊT well from here down west around Lands End, and back towards Perranporth. I bought my 701 as a result of your videos, so I probably owe you a brew!

Hello and thanks for watching and leaving a comment. So you bought a 701 as a result of my videos, I hope you are enjoying it. I’ve just looked at Google Maps which claims I’m staying 139 miles from Falmouth but that’s not too far on a 701. I do have it on my bucket list to do some of the TET at some point this year but probably not in May as a mate I’m meeting up with then will be on his GS and he’s not too keen on using that off-road. Having said that we could possibly have a meet up somewhere if you were free and you fancied it? Feel free to drop me an email at 701adventure@gmail.com and perhaps we can sort something out. 👍

Good post. I'm old enough; or just my bikes were older to run fuel by mileage, top up around 100 mls. I have the SM Husky I tend to get less mileage per tank, I think it's the nut attached to the throttle!
@701Adventures
@701Adventures 4 ай бұрын
I normally fill up about the 130-150 stage just to be safe but I was just curious how far I could actually go if I ran it dry. I think most people who own the SM version do less MPG because it’s that sort of a fun bike it just encourages you to ride fast. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. 👍

This is a very useful video not least because you and I have a similar riding style. My 890 gets around 250 to reserve and an other (safe) 20 miles. My 701 is doing c. 70 mpg so a theoretical 200 miles. I have a 690 in the US which got a genuine 75 mpg of mixed riding ie on and off-road plus has a 14 tooth front sprocket, Arrow end can and Rade garage sourced air filter. There are some getting over 80 mpg on gentle trails and one closer to 90 mpg. Pretty staggering.
@701Adventures
@701Adventures 4 ай бұрын
That’s some very decent mileage at 70, 75, 80 and nearly 90mpg….I must be doing something wrong if I’m only getting 62 mpg on average. I used to get about 60 mpg on my BMW GSA 1250 and mid 50 mpg on my BMW K1600. I’m a steady rider, not interested in racing it around or hitting the rev limiter etc. My 701 is standard apart from the Akro exhaust and a few cosmetic parts. I wonder if my exhaust is influencing the mileage to a small degree. I never had it remapped after fitting the Akro as I was told this was unnecessary.

@@701Adventures It’s quite a variation for sure. The higher ones were on long cross country treks (one in Oz). My 1200 GSA could get 67 mpg on my mix of town/A road/backroad which tends to be my yardstick. That deteriorated after fixing a sticking flap valve and possible software “upgrade” by BMW which knocked almost 10% off. My 1100 ATAS DCT would get 61 mpg.

I’ve never run mine to empty, but seeing the reserve process is very handy, so thank you for that. I mostly ride twisty mountain tarmac on mine, so I’m guessing at best I should expect about 140, or the km equivalent as I’m in France. I have the FE350 as well, and I’ve never seen a fuel light on that, but of course the tank is transparent, but what a wonderful pair of bikes…..have never regretted either of them. In spite of how tall they are, my wife has been learning on them…..the controls are so good for learners…..as long as no “whisky throttle” 😃 I can’t see me ever selling them, except maybe to update, but I don’t like the ‘24 paint schemes.
@701Adventures
@701Adventures 4 ай бұрын
I’ve never run mine to empty before and I don’t intend to do it again deliberately but as a one off for the purpose of the video, no harm done. The FE350 does have a reserve fuel light I can vouch for that but I’ve never run out on it so I don’t know what its range is. They are both great bikes though aren’t they? I had considered buying the 501 instead of the 350 but the dealer advised me the 501 would be too close in its ability to the 701 so instead they recommended the 350 and in hindsight I’m glad they did, it’s perfect for what I use it for. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. 👍

@@701Adventures absolutely. I use the 350 for fire tracks on the mountains, and buzzing through the vineyards….. it makes me look like a better rider than I really am. I did get the suspension adjusted for my size and weight (not new springs) and it’s made a massive positive difference.
@701Adventures
@701Adventures 4 ай бұрын
@@alanprice9938 I’ve managed so many trails on the 350 that I previously struggled to complete on the 701, the 350 is a beast and you can literally point it and throttle on and it seems to accomplish everything. I did think about getting the rear shock switched over for a heavier rider but I’ve never bottomed it out yet so I’ll see how I go for a while before I spend anymore money. 👍

Hi Steve. New subscriber here and I've spent ages watching a lot of your videos this weekend! Which have been really enjoyable, so thanks for the effort that you clearly put into your channel. Are you a member of the TRF (trail riders federation)? I'm very new to off-road riding and I'm trying to find some useful resources of where to go green laning in my area (Surrey) Look forward to following your new ventures! Best wishes, Paul

Paul many thanks for watching my videos and leaving a comment. I did try to join the TRF before Christmas and so far nobody has got back to me, I need to chase that up. I still consider myself very much a novice and I ride just for fun. Do you ride with anyone else to show you the ropes and give you some guidance? Have a look at your local Councils website. Search under public rights of way and that will show you the Byways. That’s a good starting point. You can also start a subscription with OS Maps Premium, I think it’s about £30 per year but the benefit is you can research your local area for Byways and then plot routes for you to ride. Let me know how you get on, Steve. 👍

From memory, from last year. Mostly off road use usual link up tarmac bits. Typical TET stuff. I usually get 180-210 km before reserve light. (112-130 miles) Generally then refill takes about 10 litres ish. Leaving 3 ish in reserve. I’ve done 40 km (25 miles) with reserve on but never run out. Typical that was end of afternoon in the middle of nowhere with no spare fuel. If there’s 60 km (40 miles) in reserve that would give me close, bit less than you got. I suppose due to more off road miles. Maybe. That’s with the same screen and 40lts backs ( it more weight) instead of 80. And Michelin tracker tires not the tkc80. Different subject. Is that a Bell adventure mx9 helmet? I’m thinking about getting one for longer road runs. To get to and from further afield TET section. I use a cheap ish mx helmet and goggles at mo. Like the cooler air flow when it’s hot off road. But the wind noise is hard going on road. Especially if I have to do a motorway section. 70-80 mph feels like a near death experience 😂 Is the bell good, cool quiet. For the relatively low cost? Thanks
@701Adventures
@701Adventures 4 ай бұрын
The mileage is just a very, very, rough guide obviously and to be honest the video is just for entertainment, certainly not to be taken seriously or relied on as we all ride differently. Yes my helmet is an MX9, I’ve had it a while now, no complaints, slightly heavier and marginally noisier than my Arai X4 but still a great helmet at a fraction of the cost of the X4. The peak is adjustable and if you’re planning on doing high speed road miles you can totally remove the peak so that the wind isn’t getting underneath it and forcing your head back. One thing of note, I take a Medium in the X4 and a Small in the MX9 so their sizing is different, something to be mindful of. I would highly recommend the MX9 and they’re currently discounted here down to about £100 which you can’t grumble at.

Hello Steve Seems like ages since I’ve sat and had my relaxing lunch while enjoying one of your vids. So thanks for that. Funnily enough I was eating a veggie "chicken" burger myself. I’m only half way through vid but it’ll be interesting to see distance to dry. I’m hoping to do a Spain/Portugal TET tour this spring and that’ll start and finish with 4-6 hours on road. (I’ll probably split that into 3x1.5 hrs cos any more and I can’t sit still on 701 seat) that also kind of lines up with going onto reserve. But might be able to split it into two if I know what’s after the reserve light comes on. I too assume the F and starts counting is how far after reserve light etc.

Duncan hi, you shouldn’t have time to sit down and have a lunch break, you should be working 24/7 while your wife is away. Let me know what you think of the video after you’ve watched it all. It’s a bit long compared with my other videos but I wanted to include some of the beautiful Lancashire countryside as well as demonstrating the mileage capability. I’d like to do some TET sections here in the U.K. this year and I think I mentioned before about doing the Great Western Trail?

I know what u mean it’s not often I watch a one hour vidio or I take 3-4 goes at it. But today I seemed to have an hour and my lunch in front of me. So I thoroughly enjoyed chilling and watched the whole thing in one go. Funny thing I have had my 701 13 months. And it sits beside me (to Jane’s horror) in our living room 😂 So I see it multiple times a day every day and yet it still catches my eye on fingernails etc. It’s just such a good looking bike. I think it’s the white yellow blue thing. Catch you in a fortnight.

Yes exactly it looks like that was staged but it wasn't, just pure coincidence. I was surprised at how rapidly the bike stopped but pleased that after adding some more fuel it fired straight back up, no spluttering and struggling to start. It never hurts to know roughly what range your tank offers. 👍
