Honestly that to me was the silliest part of the whole video (really enjoyed the rest of it!), because no one is giving Kanye West credit for Taylor's achievements... Sure, they've had a tumultuous relationship, but I don't really see him gaining anything from her talents, so it kinda felt like he [Jack] really, really was overthinking it and trying to insert her into a narrative that she doesn't belong in.

@@tessamtd Oh I'm definitely not defending Kanye's actions and I totally agree that those lyrics are disgusting and degrading. At the time when he interrupted her, he came off as a massive fool and it wouldn't have helped his brand. The whole saga with "Famous" was more complicated because he got her whole-hearted agreement for the first section of those lyrics, but she was understandably betrayed by his inclusion of lyrics he hadn't double-checked with her. I think what made the situation worse was that instead of telling the story as it was, she initially acted like this was all extremely hurtful and when it surfaced that she knew (and had endorsed) the first part, her credibility took a big blow. Add on top of that toxic internet culture and you have the perfect storm.

taylor does actually reference the elizabeth taylor/richard burton love story in ...ready for it? when she sings "and he can be my jailer, burton to this taylor. every lover known in comparison is a failure"! it's an incredibly clever line, comparing her relationship with joe to theirs. she met joe while she was still dating tom hiddleston (references to that come up in getaway car and gorgeous) and was immediately drawn to him. across the album, she expresses fear that the media might tear them apart due to her reputation (specifically in dancing with our hands tied), and so they decide to keep the relationship to themselves during that era, going to extreme lengths to avoid the media like taylor and burton had in the past. the line expresses so much in so few words, and is yet another example of how impressive taylor swift's mind is.

@@nyx4078 How can you tell me to learn to take a joke when I'm not allowed to have my own opinion and you think I too am not joking. I don't like Taylor Swift because she's quite conceited and she's not skilled in any way whatsoever. A real female vocalist or musician is someone like Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Billie Holiday, Lady Gaga, Nina Simone. These women are actually musically gifted and understand musical theory... They're actually trained musicians. Taylor Swift is just a pop star. I'm not sure what age you are so maybe you're at the age where you think pop music is awesome but pop music is not difficult nor is it real music. Pop music does not take musical skill or require you to be a real musician. It is generic lyrics and beats looped over and over overly produced and artificially enhanced tracks. There is no complex music structure/theory, there are no odd times signatures there is nothing that resembles what real music is. If the phrases I used are not things you are familiar with that is also an example how pop music is not real music. There is nothing lyrically or musically complex about any of Taylor Swift's albums. In fact artists like her and pop music are making society dumber. I respect your right to like Taylor Swift and whatever type of music you prefer and you don't have to agree with me, but most real musicians will tell you the same about taylor swift. If you want to go listen to a really amazing female musician go listen to some Nina Simone, I'm sure you will have a new appreciation for music.
@nyx4078
@nyx4078 3 жыл бұрын
@@statusquoreject Sorry, but where did I ever say you're not allowed to have your own opinion? I quote from my previous comment: "But if you don't like her music or her in general, you can obviously have your own opinion." So, with that said, we all get to like who we like..and if pop music brings people joy, you or I don't get to invalidate the genre. I, for one, listen to her for her lyrics.. possibly why Evermore and Folklore are my favourite albums. And every critic or musician I have read/heard, talking about them has praised these albums. But I do agree with you on one point: pop music is overshadowing other genres that deserve so much more viewership and do require a lot of skill. And yes, there are artists that are better vocalists, as you named. But that does not mean people should undermine another person's hard work. This woman has been writing and creating music and been in the music industry for over 15 years; and while she may not be the best singer there is, she HAS improved. Her music brings so much joy to so many people, and isn't that the most important thing about music? I, for one, like to listen to a variety of artists on different levels of success and in a lot of languages, even ones that I cannot speak lol, so I do know that there are people out there who deserve so much more recognition than they get. Anyway, this has been rather long. Have a good day.

@@nyx4078 well you told me I can't a joke when I was being sarcastic with my original comment but I guess the sarcasm didn't come through well. About music, i can respect your POV and where you're coming from but I am not invalidating a genre of music by pointing out TS is not a musician and pop music doesn't require a person to be a "musician." I have studied music for 40 yrs and as musician pop music does not get much respect with formally trained musicians. It's not really formal music. You just may have a different definition of a "musician" is than what the technical term is and that's fine, but words matter. I'm guessing by your name that you might be Indian/punjabi (so am I) and I dont know if you know who Anoushka Shankar is but I consider her the definition of a true musician because she's classically trained and has studied musical theory whereas Taylor Swift is just a girl who kind of can carry a tune and plays the guitar a little. I highly doubt Taylor Swift has the skill to play her guitar to the level Anoushka Shankar can play the sitar. Music classes and music theory are a real thing. Music structure and timing are real musical concepts. It's not me just being a jerk trying to invalidate pop music. Being trained in those things are what define someone as a musician and Taylor Swift is not trained in those things. Calling people like TS musicians is like someone with a smartphone camera calling themself a photographer, or someone who makes a beat on their computer a DJ, or someone who can draws in their spare time an artist. There's a lot more to it is what I'm saying and the words have meanings which matter. Most of TS's songs are about her relationships so it's even hard to see her as a much of a lyricist plus she also doesn't write all her own songs. I also feel like she plays the victim a lot and the Netflix special she was unbearable. Regardless, I'm glad you're familiar with some of the other musicians I mentioned.... The thing is 50 years from now the musicians I mentioned will still be very famous and renowned but I highly doubt Taylor Swift will carry the same kind of weight or memory. But hey if you like Taylor Swift and she makes you happy then by all means listen to whoever you love. If Taytay does it for you then I'm glad you have someone who brings you joy. Have a wonderful day.

Your thoughts on Stargirl had me throwing my headphones on my desk, man. One of the key things from that book that has stuck with me throughout the years is her unashamed kindness. She is openly kind to everyone, but she also does a lot anonymously. I think that yes, she is wild and there can be a lot going on with her at times, she would be respectful of everyone no matter their choice. But others choose to not be kind to her. There is also a lot to be said about the impact (both short and long term) of just one kind decision, as well.

As far as the “eat, pray, love” she said she was broke. When she divorce she gave her husband everything just to be done. The money she took to go traveling for a year was the money she got for writing the book; it was her advance. She was a very established author before EPL. So yes she was incredibly privileged to have the ability to get back more than she lost. But she was broke when she divorced. He ex husband took both the houses, all the savings, and she was living in a rented 1 bed in NYC that she put on her credit card. It was situational broke, but she was broke.
