Fun fact: I attended a panel centreing Black writers, directors etc in animation, and one of the speakers was Peter Ramsey (Director of Spiderverse, my Twitter mutual, etc). This was around the time Soul and Spy In Disguise had already come out, so the Black Lead Turned Into Animal joke was getting quite the bodycount. During the talk, Peter Ramsey said, very nonchalantly, "you know in one of the earlier drafts, Miles was going to turn into a spider for a significant part of the movie!" and everyone was like "What seriously????" And he laughed and said "Fuck no!" It was great. He's great, love the guy.

It drives me crazy that they decided to make her a workaholic without adressing the class and race factors that put her in this position. It's implied that her being poor and black are obstacles to get her dream business, and yet they decided to just blame it on her working too much. And get that they're cowards, but like why give her an arc that ties it back to the thing they're so afraid to address?

Funny, I saw exactly the opposite. I saw the race and class issues loud as hell. And I saw a character who simply wouldn’t let that keep her down, despite it being beyond reasonable to give up. I also didn’t see her bussiness not getting off the ground being blamed on her working too much. Just that blatantly racist, misogynist rich pricks weren’t goin to sell to her. Maybe it’s because I’m white, but me and my daughter loved this movie and I used it to talk to her about classism and racism, and about being stubborn and busting her ass.

@@robertaylor9218 I see it as the opposite as what you said mostly because Tiana never complains about the system, even when she is told she can't buy her restaurant. Even though the system is the reason she ended up in such a deplorable condition. The movie instead places all the blame on these two random dudes as individuals rather than the whole system. All the white characters except for those two dudes are extremely kind and supportive of Tiana (and even the two dudes are more ignorant than they are blatantly racist, basically a microaggression). And even though we know the setting and how terrible black people were treated back then, the world of princess and the frog paints a very different picture of life back then and the setting. Most kids who watched the movie were too young to understand the historical context (because they didn't learn about it in school yet). All they know is these two dudes won't give her the restaurant and its unfair because they are being mean to her despite her working so hard. That's how far the reasoning goes. Not that the system is bad, but that these two dudes are bad.

I really intensely relate to Tiana, but that's part of what bothers me about the movie--even as the movie claims to criticize her for her workaholism, it also celebrates it in a weird way, and that had a big impact on my values when I was younger. I wish they'd done more to tackle toxic productivity. It's far from the worst-aging thing about this movie, but, like, it's up there.

Yep! I love Tiana because I respect her pragmatism, determination, and work ethic, and her willingness to call Naveen out on his BS. I've never been a fan of the whole "wish upon a star and you'll get what you want" schtick because I've seen the hurt that belief can cause when taken literally and at face value. At the same time, I am fully and painfully aware of the probleeeeemaaaaatic implications of having the workaholic Disney princess be a black woman living in the segregationist South. Also, it is certainly crappy for the narrative to scold Tiana for grinding when she has little choice but to grind if she wants to survive and thrive.
@krombopulos_michael

I think this movie came out before the whole "toxic productivity" trend really existed in a conscious way. I feel that while most people acknowledge that the movie is bad, Tiana has had a positive impact as a symbol of needed representation. I took my 2 daughters to big Disney princess event a few years ago; there were over 100 little girls there and about a third were black. And when the woman dressed as Tiana got up on stage and sang "Almost There" I could see these girls lighting up. Tiana really matters. I wish she wasn't in one of Disney's most forgettable movies.

It baffles me that Disney didn't just come up with a fantasy world/kingdom for Tiana (or another black princess character), like they've done with so many of their white princesses. Then they wouldn't have had to try to balance the realism of the 1920s with not making the one black princess movie deal heavily with racism. To be fair, I agree that racism shouldn't be prominent in the film, because kids watch Disney movies to escape into fantasy, and black kids shouldn't be denied that. It wouldn't fix the lousy characterization and lack of plot. But it would remedy the awkward moments of editing history and almost-nearly-sort-of mentioning racism.

Maybe because her struggles were based on a real woman.. for the most part, her owning a restaurant was inspired by a real black woman who fought to make her own business. They only “kept it related to Disney” because of the whole Princess and The Frog aspect.. but then turned it on its head. Instead of the frog becoming a prince, she became a frog, and instead of being disconnected, she fully embraced the help of others. The story isn’t about “black people are animals” but being taken out of your element in order to appreciate and value what you’ve got. She was so tunnel-visioned to the point that the restaurant was all she cared about.. she pushed away everyone in the process of trying to make her family business a reality. That can be stressful and overwhelming. In the end, she learned to let others help and achieve her dream. Idk how people so blindly missed the message of the movie…

@sirensong I think it just wasn’t believable that Tiana actually learned this, she’s a hard worker but also very prideful, and she needed that humble experience to communicate that she admits her flaws and is willing to work more on redirecting her outlook of life. To me, the story and the writing seemed sloppy to deliver this message. Nearly through most of the story it is Tiana referencing her father’s dreams and teaching Tiana how to achieve those dreams through hard work, it was only corrected once by Tiana’s mother but it got lost by Tiana working on Naveen’s issues.

I actually think this is a fantastic movie. I think it's one of the best Disney movies of all time. When I was watching it, I got invested in the characters, and every time I fall in love with them all over again. I think they're chemistry is great. The only problem that I always felt was that they are frogs entirely too long! I would have no problem with all of the frogness, if there was some other type of black princess is or if there had been a part two where she's fully human the whole time.

I love the movie in parts; I really related to Tiana's mentality at the time and she'd flat out the prettiest Princes with the best dress, Naveen was a breath of fresh as a Prince with a personality, what more needs to be said about Dr Facilier?, and even Charlotte, though she probably shouldn't have been in this movie, is a stand out for being a female friend who gets to be goofy. It'd absolutely gorgeous both in it's design and it's hand-drawn animation that I still miss so longingly, and the songs are honestly still stuck in my head to this day. So why couldn't they have just bought all that together with better writing?? Why did they have her spend the whole movie as a frog????

Living in New Orleans, I’m in a tough spot. Tiana was inspired by Leah Chase who was an incredible woman, but the rest of the story feels like a giant tourist trap just like the quarter in real life. The voodoo storyline is the type of thing that tourists associate with the city from Anne Rice. Throwing in cajun stereotypes too with the hunters & Ray along with ignoring the very real racism in New Orleans during the 20’s. Side note: Disney ignored segregation in that world but World World 1 still happened because her father is wearing a doughboy (army) uniform in the picture.

Quick tangent about Tiana's and Lotti's friendship, which is just about one of the most meaningful aspects of this movie to me in a general cultural context: I've only ever heard people say negative stuff about this movie buut honestly, all frogs, I mean flaws considered, I do think it does a few select things right that it doesn't get credit for. I personally really appreciate it, it's nice and I honestly like it better than some others, inlcuding Frozen. But the biggest thing that stood out to me about it, besides the music and Facilier, is the friendship between Tiana and Lotti that kind of blends into the background and isn't mentioned in any take I've ever seen on it. I don't know how intentional this was and I'm not trying to open a discussion about brownie points for Disney or how appropriate/oddly specific any of the decisions about the movie's settings are here. I just really, really appreciated this little side story of how the spoiled rich girl who is used to getting her way and doesn't even think about it twice, is just genuinely excited about and invested in her friend's happiness without having to make it about herself (which she is very obviously used to doing in any other aspect of her life). There are ways to look at this critically, too - but letting go of all the complicated social dynamics that are being glossed over, for the sake of taking the friendship at face value of what it is portrayed to be in the movie, gives me this: the bubbly, spoiled, rich blonde who was predestined to become an antagonist by everything TV (and Disney) has taught us about how blonde girls and female "friendships"/relationships work, being happy to take the sideline and support her best friend - when Tiana gets the prince that Lotti so dearly wanted for herself (for dumb reasons, but still, real to her). And I think that above anything we could consider as adults about all the layers of implications this friendship would have entailed in this very unnecessarily real world setting, that is what I hope little girls are going to see there: an honest, mutually supportive and loving friendship between two very different girls. They're always kind to one another. That shouldn't stand out, but it did to me among a sea of movies, including most by Disney, in which female protagonists are usually either mostly alone (with men or, at the most, one-dimensional NPC women) or among a bunch of very unhumanly mean other women until [PRINCE]. That's meaningful to me and I've never seen it mentioned. And just in case it's not clear: This is not about any cringey notions of "color-blindness".

That's sweet and I liked that too, however, I feel like Disney only had Charlotte and her dad to make white people feel comfortable and assure them that they're not racist. And sadly, it's working, because people love to make the movie all about Charlotte and how she deserves to find her happy ending and act like Charlotte being a white rich girly blonde girl who is nice and not racist is the most important thing about the movie. It's nice sentiment but I feel like it ties into the many problems of the movie and how they both wanted to force their Black princess to face the hardships of racial strife and suffering(and also remind young Black girls that even in their fairytale stories there is no room for true wish fulfilment) and not make it "too Black"(Naveen's ambiguous af race--although he's at least played by Southeast Asian men at the Disney theme parks--Charlotte and Eli's entire existence, etc.). Plus, while I'm all for more female friendship in Disney films, why is Tiana, the only Black princess(well not anymore now that Wish is coming out but still), the only one to not have a female friend the same race as her. All the other Disney Princesses with female best friends are woc and all of them are the same race. Pocahontas has Nakoma, who is also Native American, Mulan has the three princesses who are sisters, Raya has Namaari(although they were rivals at first), Mirabel has her sisters and female cousin, Tiana doesn't get a Black girl to hang out with. She gets a white girl. Because obviously they couldn't make this movie "too Black" and alienate audiences, like I said, so to make white people feel comfy cozy, her best friend is a white girl too.

@@imthebossmermaid3648 Wouldn't that defeat the purpose though? Lottie and her father were obviously one of the few cases of rich white folk who weren't discriminating Tiana. And Tiana was so workaholic she would've dropped anyone else other than the ditz rich kid too dense to leave her. And Lottie being white instead of a rich black friend would be because in this time period Disney was making a parallel to their older princesses with twists. Lottie wants to be a fairy tale princess, but Tiana gets the fairy tale ending. This is the same time period that they made Enchanted, where they parodied the classic fairy tale trope by bringing a princess into the real world.

I think they backed themselves into a corner by using the Frog Princess story in the first place. Disney was like "We want a black princess, but instead of using an African folktale or creating a brand new story for her, we HAVE to use a well know European fairytale because we want this to be like our classic princess films which were mostly European fairytale. But we have to make it in a setting where a black woman makes sense! And also we have to have a subversive twist on the classic tale where the main character's kiss doesn't work because she isn't a princess! So she HAS to become a frog for most of the movie or else they have no reason to be together throughout the movie!" Because of Disney's insistence on making this movie about The Frog Prince and also with a black woman as the protagonist and as a way to "subvert expectations" they wrote themselves into a corner and decided making Tiana a frog was the best way to get out of it. Also, one of the things that also bugs me about Tiana becoming a frog is that in other Disney movies where a character gets turned into an animal it's a karmic punishment where, mostly, the person changed has to learn some moral lesson and change as a person to get turned back into a human. Lampwick got turned into a donkey because he drank, smoked, broke things and did other bad things. The Beast was changed because he was cruel to an old woman be of her appearance and had to learn to love and to be loved in return. Kuzco was a selfish, arrogant tyrant who was only able to eventually change back by learning to care about people other than himself. Kenai was changed into a bear to learn a lesson about how revenge doesn't solve anything and to care for Koda. Hell, even Naveen was a lazy brat who wanted to marry into money because he wanted to contin being lazy after being cut off by his parents. But what did Tiana do to deserve being turned into a frog? Yeah she was a workaholic who neglected having fun, but is that something that deserves being punished? And honestly she was already "punished" for it by being outbid on the restaurant meaning her sacrifices were all for nothing. Dick move Disney. Dick move.

I see where you’re coming from but there is an implication in that statement that death is inherently traumatizing. Disney flips itself backward to NOT give us black princesses nor princes to celebrate. The pre-development of this movie was a nightmare. Her original name was Maddie and she looked like Kizzy from Roots. The uproar was so intense to the point where they changed it. When people learned the prince wasn't going to be black, Disney straight up said, we don't want to alienate our white fans by making this a black movie. Because if your leading actors are both black, it's now a black movie. It also doesn't help that Tiana was the last 2D animated princess, the immediate princesses movie after she was Tangled and Frozen. It makes you feel like Disney save its top talent for the latter and saddled its old and near-obsolete talent for the former.

That bit at the end where you mention how Tiana and Naveen were meant to be opposites who come together reminded me a bit of another video I watched this week from Cinema Therapy about how the main romantic couple in Enchanted also start out at opposite ends of a spectrum (tho in their case, their approaches to romance) and how they genuinely do come together in the middle. And iirc, this movie came out at about the same time, so it makes Tiana’s lack of an arc stand out more, imo. It’s a crying shame tbh.

Princess and the Frog is certainly one of my favorite Disney films, but it is worth listening to various black voices on the film. There are a lot of things this film did wrong. I mean, I understand how they got to this point, but having your first black princess be a frog the whole time is... a missed opportunity at the least. Also, a way Dr. Facilier could've had more connection to Tiana is if he knew her father. Maybe they were old friends, and Tiana's father somehow betrayed him or Dr. Facilier killed him, and Tiana was familiar with him that could've been fun. Maybe a character arc for Tiana could've been to understand that hard work doesn't always get you want you want. Though this is Disney, so they're never going to do that. Though I don't know, that might also be a bad message to pair with the first black princess. Definitely as well Disney needs another black princess who doesn't transform into something else. And whatever that film is should probably be led by black artists instead of white people trying to figure out what black people want.

As well as being Tiana's fathers friend, you could also have him swoop in and make a deal with her right after she loses the restaurant, perhaps he was even the one who bought it before her or we are just led to believe that until it's revealed to be Lottie's dad who bought it or something, and all she has to do is get close to the prince and get his blood for the necklace (as Naveen is a known playboy). We would also find out his true motivations and what led him to making a deal with his "friends", is he truly selfish and evil or like Tiana (and Fagan from Oliver and Company) and was backed into a corner.

This is such a well done video. It hurts bc Tiana is so insanely likable to me, she's so fun and charming to have on screen - but they didn't allow her to do anything. Instead they made her into a frog and forced her to focus all of her energy on the lackluster plot and a love interest (I like Naveen as a love interest, but it should have been much more of a sub-plot and it admittedly doesn't actually help achieve anything for either of their arcs). The whole "kissing a frog only to turn into a frog" would be a funny gag if it was maybe only for like one scene, but instead it just hurts the entire movie for me. "almost there" will always bring a tear to my eye though. And dr. falicer is the goat. I agree with all your points, awesome video!!

i wish the movie couldve go both ways: Naveen learning the simple way of life and Tiana bonds with the people she cares about and strive towards her goal. Honestly, Tiana has no problem when it comes to character, sure she seem workaholic but that's because she's striving towards her passions. She doesn't have conflict with her mother or Charlotte, they genuinely support her. Naveen, on the other hand, should get the character development because he NEEDS it. He's the spoiled rich kid and he was BANISHED by his parents which is why he came to New Orleans. He's BROKE so he needs to suck it up and learn how to live without being serve in a silver platter. HE'S THE ONE NEEDING CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. He could have a similar character development as Sharpey in Sharpey's Fabolous Adventure though it's mostly just working his way to stabilize himself. I should add that Charlotte could probably be a good foil to Naveen. They are both rich(one was), but what sets them apart is their personalities. Naveen doesn't know the simple way of life but Charlotte is familiar with it due to being close with Tiana. Not gonna lie, I am content with the way Charlotte turned out in the original, but I kinda want to see her and Tiana bonding over cooking, just having fun. I would've also liked if romance is secondary or even at the end of the list, kinda like how the romance in Mulan only started at the END of the movie because it's out of the blue if they put the romance IN THE MIDDLE OF A FUCKING WAR. I just love slow burn okay? Now about Facilier... He's perfect. He could still have that the same plot as the original albeit tweaked. Lawrence ehhh i guess still the same, a pawn to Facilier's plot. tldr: THE TURNING INTO FROG IS POINTLESS AND IT'S BRAVE AND BROTHER BEAR ALL OVER AGAIN

Thank you! I’ve always thought Tiana was wasted potential throughout the movie. The fact that not only her being a frog throughout the film was false advertisement as the ‘first black princess’, but also when watching the film a 2nd time, she doesn’t have much to do with the majority of the plot. Just omit her and the whole story involving Naveen, Facilier, Charlotte, Lawerence, and the rest of the side characters would still play out, minus the romance (and possibly ray’s death). Also, calling Cinderella’s mice friends ‘ride or die’ made me laugh.

I’m a BW & loved the Princess & the Frog. Truth is… ppl would’ve found a problem with the movie regardless of the storyline. If Tiana had Cinderella’s story line the issue would’ve been - “why do she have to practically be a slave to her step mom & sisters” If Tiana had Beauty & the Beast story line “ - Why she gotta struggle love with a beast & speak life into him to get her prince”? If Tiana had Mulan’s storyline - “Why she gotta fight like a man”? If Tiana had Sleeping Beauty’s storyline - “Why she sleep the whole movie”? If Tiana had Snow White’s Storyline - “Why she always apologizing & got to live with strange men” If Tiana had the little mermaid’s Story Line - “Why she can’t talk for half the movie” If Tiana had Pocahontas Storyline - “Why she kissing Colonizers”? 🤣🤣 I love that Tiana is milk chocolate, with a beautiful broad flat nose, luscious full lips, & dimples. She also had the most wardrobe changes of any Disney princess & despite having less screen time 💚 And don’t forget that this movie came out in 2009…They could’ve easily went the computer animated route but took the time to Honor Tiana with beautiful hand drawn 2D animation. That takes a lot of time, skill, patience, & $$$.

It sounds like a compelling and "realistic" motivation, much more than a personal vendetta... That's precisely what makes him a great villain: he doesn't care who he hurts as long as it helps him reach his goals. Of course, he doesn't have a scene with Tiana until late into the movie; he's the Shadow Man, moving and scheming in the... shadows. His victims can be anyone, which makes him even more of a villain. But the books were very typical fantasy stories, which I felt unfortunately didn't mesh well with what they were going for in the setting, characters, and lessons of the movie. There's probably a way it could have heen done well, but that didn't happen here :/ So for anyone who's confused why Tiana spent most of the movie as a frog: that's the plot of the first book.
