There was a time when I feared I made a terrible mistake in getting dentures. A lot of us have felt this way so please don't feel alone and don't think this is the end of the road for you! Once the worst of it was over, everything drastically improved for me!

I am 10 days into my denture journey. I am still in the "regret" phase. I have been fighting gum disease for over 25 years, more then 5 gum surgeries (actually I lost count) trying to save my teeth. I have lost the battle, and failed. I hate them. I hate them with every fiber of my being. I won't even let my wife see me without them in, I am so embarrassed and ashamed at what I have come to. I have shed tears almost everyday since. I was in tears this morning putting in my bottom dentures, the pain takes several minutes to subside. My top ones are loose, so not much pain, but very uncomfortable. I have 4 to 6 months before the implants are healed for the snap-in's to work. I have lost 10 pounds since because its so difficult to eat, never mind even talking. I can't imagine this getting better, but every video says it will happen. I don't know anyone else with dentures that I can confide in, so I watch as many videos as I can, and still feel depressed after watching. Right now I wish I could go back in time, and tell myself NOT to do it, and take your chances.

As I just told another comment but yours I even relate to even more I understand I understand I understand it is so much bigger than anyone usually fully admits because there's this oh I'm strong I can take the pain or it shouldn't be affecting me psychologically this much but I have been in psychological agony as well as physical and so far deeply regret the choice because I mostly did it cuz I didn't want to continue to put massive amounts of money into the teeth in my insurance pays for a full set of dentures every 5 years so I just said okay let's do it but oh my God it literally has sent me back and I'm in the theater and the arts and the teaching profession and after the covid I was getting so close so close and happy to getting back to life as we all are and then this anyway if you need a comrade just someone to chat with ... I tend to be hugely over committed in terms of too many people in my life but I sure could use someone just in specifically to occasionally talk about this because otherwise I'm feeling very very alonr.. I have a huge wonderful group of friends and colleagues all over the country but the lonest comes from one not wanting to complain and why and call vanity call it what you will but I don't have my teeth and can't keep them in right now and so I simply don't want to be around people I actually couldn't be I hate to look at myself so much without these dentures and I have not yet once been able to put them in even slightly from the pain and the bone shards and on and on but anyway I'm not usually complainer and it sounds like you aren't either but when you use the words embarrassed and ashamed and tears oh my God I get it I get it I get it it really is an amputation is a complete life change and I guess I knew that but I didn't realize it with this be this overwhelming and frustrating so anyway I'm not quite sure if you can respond directly to me, but should you need or watch what could be a once a week check in with each other, vent, rage, share tips whatever I think only people who have going through this recent traumatic experience can really help no matter how many family members or friends or colleagues you have.. And what's especially challenging most of all for me is somehow not being able to without saying Express just how traumatic and horrific this is like a true amputation because then I get embarrassed because God we just came through covid what about the millions that died what about before ukrainians what about the people in tents living on the highways and on and on and on she gets to the point where you absolutely don't even want to tell people that you're not exactly in a good mood which is course is an understatement and I don't want to isolate from those I love again but so far that's what I've been doing . Anyway I'm sure like me you have a very very busy life and I'm completely backlogged with all sorts of people I should communicate with but I really think all of us going through this needs some outlet so if you want to communicate I'm not sure I can leave my number here but text is always good for me 802-279-2399 my name is Jude

@@bradrock7731 ... May I ask, are you considering a Full Upper over a Full Lower appliance? If you have the knowledge to know what a favorable impression looks like, able to establish a vertical and centric relationship and set the teeth with the proper occlusion and balance, you might be able to make it work. I'm not trying to discourage you but it takes a lot of experience to make successful removable dentures. I know this because I've made thousands. To answer your question ... no, I haven't seen any of the "DO IT YOURSELF" kits. Should you decide to have a go at it, please let me know how everything turns out. If you would like to touch base by phone I'd be happy to help you on your journey. Best of luck, George

@Mistyc Mc ana ... It's amazing technology for sure, and it's going to eventually find it's place for the removable practice. For me, and for now, I'm only interested in offering the dental profession a digital replacement denture that starts with the patients existing dentures. Just a side note: I still encourage my Dentist to take advantage of the patients old dentures, when possible, as a starting point. Lots of information in a well worn denture. After mounting the old denture I usually need to open the bite slightly to regain lost vertical. Saves so much time, this way, over the 5 or 6 appointments needed with the conventional approach. We refer to this approach as the '3 Appointment Denture" Keep it simple ... "less can be more" if that makes since. Guess I'm getting to old to start over ... ha =)

I realized while I was watching this that it is now been seven years since I had the rest of my teeth removed and implants supported dentures put in. I could identify with a lot of what you're talking about, but I have to admit it's been so long now that I've kind of forgotten what it was like when I first got the procedure done.. I only know that I haven't had any pain for 7 years, no infections, no missing teeth, for 7 years I've been able to eat what I wanted, and for the last 7 years I've actually smiled, something I never did before with gray stained damaged teeth. All I can say is I will never regret my decision to have this done, it changed my life

Same!! I got dentures at 30, 35 now. Never have regretted it. I’m not afraid to smile big, I can eat, drink just about anything (except I miss eating dill pickles by biting out the inside first lol). I do need to get my dentures remade , as I still have my original dentures (thanks, COVID!!). But I still have zero regret, never had any. I had a beautiful perfect smile at one time (before the enamel got completely destroyed from pregnancies), and I miss that… but that smile was long gone by the time I got dentures. Relearning to talk and eat was a process though, I’ll say that!!

@crush it they should use fixodent or poligrip. I prefer fixodent! Lol it holds better and I'm 42. Most seniors don't like using it bc it's really snuggled onto the gum but to release them at night I just gargle with hot water. Hot as I can stand it for easy release. I work with seniors anyways so it's fun to let them know my process. Just remember for an elderly person put as little as possible onto the denture plates. Hopes this helps! 🙏

I am 3 weeks into wearing my top denture, I experienced everything you talked about. It hurt so bad taking those things in and out because of my gums still being swollen and super sore, but I toughed it out and now it's a little bit easier than it was. I was ashamed to let my husband see me without my teeth but, after he did see me he said to me, " Honey you're still beautiful whether you have teeth or not," that gave me even more confidence and then my daughter saw me with them in and she cried and said "now that's the mama I remember! She told me and my son in law told me how good I looked and that I looked healthier." Oh, I can't leave this out my 2 1/2 yr old grandson said Grannie you're pretty! So that really boosted my spirits! So yeah It is frustrating at times eating or drinking but I know it will get better, so for people reading this comment hang in there it will get better day by day! Yes, they did warn me that they will not at all be like my natural teeth and will feel bulky and painful for a while, but my final set will be so much better! I hate my temporary dentures! Even though they are absolutely beautiful, I regretted the decision right after my final fitting yesterday. I have been so bummed out today. That is until I saw your video. It takes a while to adjust. I have been waring the same dentures for thirty years now. Since the adjustments I have not seen another dentist in all that time. I take them out to brush them and leave them in the rest of the time. My last girlfriend did not know I had them until I eventually told her. Mistake. Easy enough to avoid. She still sees a dentist regularly putting in new posts and crowns and such to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars per year. I can eat most things though small seeds are an issue. What is it worth to look good, eat what you want, and never again be in a dental chair? I can still recall the shock of loosing my teeth. It will always be a shock.

In my own experience it's better to keep some teeth you have then remove them all and replace with tender. When you have tender, you don't speak and eat normally, you feel stressful, I always use clue everyday, I shouldn't have removed off my remaining teeth off, that's my biggest mistake, should've asked dentist to make bridge than been removed, remember some dentists speak from something they haven't been experiencing but based on some research. once ur teeth out, that's it. A year. Nope! Try never getting rid of pain. Try having to always grind every bite your eat. Oh, scrambled eggs are OK. But I had not choice. My teeth were not getting any more cavities, but the bones under my teeth ached all the time, so I had not choice but to get dentures. I do have good memories of when my teeth were good. I never needed them straightened either. The esthetics of my teeth were perfect, it's just that my bones were so infected. I attribute much of that to dentists who had to save bad teeth at all costs. If I had not had root canals, I believe that a bridge or two here and there would have sufficed. I did have a really bad dentist when I was under 10 years old who put a needle into my mouth for novocaine who pushed that needle deep into my jaw bone. That dentist might be the one who caused me to have the root canal in my 20s. I'd give anything to be able to have a dentist who could give me implants that would work. I tried to be careful about the dentists I saw, but alas, they ruined my mouth. I can look like I have teeth, but I never get rid of the pain and there is no way under the sun that I can actually chew my food. Grind, grind, grind. I never can really go out to dinner. I go to be with family and friends and figure out something to look like I'm eating, but I do all my real eating ground up food at home. Sorry for the rant, it's just no fun of any kind.

I agree with Sharon!! And I have wondered about this journey for me due to medical issues that I couldn’t control. However, those people younger with dentures were those I had worked with that were addicts who became parents! And I remember one lady in particular and she used to hide her smile and when she told us she finally moved up the queue to get dentures we got to celebrate then we got to celebrate again when she felt confident smiling! It was amazing and wonderful! It was also such an honour to walk a bit of that journey with her and when I think, “oh dear I don’t know if can do this” (and in my case I don’t know what I’ll do), people like you and this lady…. I hated smiling because I hated how my teeth looked. I couldn't eat nuts, or anything too hot or too cold because everything hurt. The day I got my teeth pulled the pain was gone - I was sore but it wasn't the same. 2 weeks later I was eating Thanksgiving dinner with no pain in my mouth at all. Speaking took some getting used to - but the confidence I gained was well worth it.

Dentures have come a long way and there’s many things now that make it nearly impossible to tell someone has dentures. I have to say you don’t look like you wear dentures. I have partial back dentures, but still have both front top, and bottom teeth. My issue is chewing, I just don’t seem to get a good chew, almost like they are not sharp enough to grind the food. So I just take them out and chew with my front teeth… Plus it’s hard for me to swallow at times and it takes forever to chew up the food just to swallow safely. I just wish the teeth they use in a denture was a bit sharper or thinner or something!

I finished my denture procedure in January. I was adamant that i didn't want dentures, i truly feared them and wanted implants but due to cost they're gonna have to wait. But you know what? When i realized that there's people out there that's lost limbs, etc and manage to adapt and get on with life then i knew it was gonna be ok in the end. And so far so good! Sure, you'll have good and bad days but as long as you have a good dentist and an open mind then you'll be fine. Best wishes to anyone reading this going through the same. It'll be fine 😉

Without implants, I would be worried the bone and jaw would shrink. Are there things you are learning about how to minimize that?
@edmk73
@edmk73 Жыл бұрын
@@GlassOnion602 I'm really not sure about the shrinkage. After talking to several people i know with dentures they've not expressed a problem with this, only gum shrinkage but i knew that already. Of course, this will be different for some, it all depends on that persons situation. Implants won't be for everyone as previous problems can lead to a weak jaw bone and from what i understand implants come with a higher level of maintenance, never mind the cost! Either way, it is what it is, I'll see what happens but I'm not worrying about it.

Best decision I ever made. I'm 6 months post upper denture and about to get my "permanent" denture. My jaws and gums have shrunk so much. My temporary denture feels huge. It's definitely a process. It feels like trying to eat and talk with golf balls in your mouth. I've cried at times but my old teeth hurt so bad, I don't regret getting a denture. Aaaaaand its so fun taking them out😆 But the first time I really looked in the mirror I cried. This is a great video.🎉

You got this Tony. It's a bit rough in the beginning, but you'll either love or hate your dentures but just know, you can't change the fact that you got your teeth pulled, but you can change your dentures to how you want them so that you're able to eat, smile, laugh again. You'll find yourself saying, "this isn't as bad as I thought it would be" once you're all healed and able to do the things that you didn't think you would be able to do. Patience is the key. I've had my uppers for over 20 years. I just did bottoms on April 5th and I truly thought I'd hate it... but man... I love them. I can eat anything and everything with no problems and I have a technique that keeps them in all day with even eating throughout the day. And these aren't even my perms... but I'm prepared for my perms now that I know what I'm doing. :)

My partner had all of his teeth extracted in April, and the dentist actually recommended letting his gums heal entirely and waiting for his permanent set. He was sooo glad he didn’t get immediate dentures- he was virtually pain free by the third day and was eating solid food with no teeth by the second week. He’s now in the process of getting his dentures fitted and done… My tooth extraction journey is coming up this next spring and my mind was set on immediate dentures (because I work with the public) but after seeing what he went through versus people who had immediate dentures, I’m waiting as well. It’ll also save me around $1,600!

I was a hot mess too! So swollen and bruised with a hockey puck in my mouth. It IS a shock to the system... physical and mental! I remember having to close my eyes to chew so I could focus better on my mouth movements. It was rough for me and I still slur some when I talk, 3 months post 16 extractions, but I wouldn't go back for anything! I only regret putting it off so long!! Having to relearn chewing after 7 years of chewing with only my front teeth was harder than I thought it would be! Re-training my cheek muscles to smile after hiding it for so many years is difficult, too! My advise is life is too short to be tripping on teeth... get it over with and enjoy eating and smiling!! 😁

I'm glad I found this video. I've had top dentures for just over a year and hated every single day since. Mistake no. 1 ... I've never been back to a dentist. Mistake no. 2 I don't practice eating with them. Mistake no. 3. I take them out every chance I get. They don't look bad, I just can't talk properly and they feel like I have a block of plastic in my mouth and I still sometimes have a gag reflex. I feel like my life is over, I hardly ever leave my house. Medicaid Aids in South Africa hardly ever pay for dental costs except for the bare minimum anyway. Really, I regret them every single day 😢😢😢

My wife just got her upper dentures as I type. She is going thru the exact same issues, but it is really good to see how great yours came out. We just returned as she has excessive bleeding, and they just told me. That they are going to re cement them once the bleeding stops. I myself had dentures done several years ago. So I know all too well the adjustments you go thru on getting used to the fact that they are permanent. I eventually came to grips with it, but it did take time.

But, on behalf of people like me, that didnt do drugs or have an accident...I just had bad teeth no matter how well I took care of them! To someone that has never had the pain and shame of bad teeth, they can't understand how wonderful it is to smile and chew crunchy things, to not have infections...it was a hard adjustment and truthfully I didn't see in the beginning how I would ever adjust but, now I am grateful every day...every, single, day!!!!

This video brought tears to my eyes. Long history of cavities here. I have always taken care of my teeth but cavities just always cropped up. My teeth do not take drilling and fillings. It was always temporary and within the year that particular tooth that was worked on, would break and I never could afford dental insurance and didnt qualify for care credit because I had low income for years. I would go and have those broken teeth pulled during free extraction day at the local government clinic. With what little teeth I had left in the back, I lost many when I was pregnant for my twins. I have no bottom back teeth. Because of this, my upper back teeth are somewhat useless, so to speak. I can't chew well with just upper teeth. I know what needs to happen and I can't afford implants to replace just the ones I've lost..I cry a lot, focusing on the negative and although it's rough having this poor mouth environment, I can't imagine not having my own teeth. The ones I have left are not rotting..they look normal. Anyway, I felt all of what you said. Research leads to understanding and that can calm nerves but what I loved about this video is that it was informative but also reached the human emotional level of this journey. Aside from "how much is this going to cost", this type of dialog is the most important part of it all.. this right here. Thank you..I'd never guess in a million years you wear dentures. I'd run right now to have the rest of mine pulled, if I knew I'd get teeth like yours. I'll probably end up with your first pair..if I'm even that lucky. When it's time to do this, I'll remember everything you've said. This is the only video I've seen that gives me hope. Thank you so much.
