This is the Mammotion Luba 2, a robot lawn mower that cuts your grass automatically with no boundary wire and a simple setup. It can mow in any pattern you want and leaves beautiful lines in your lawn. I tried it for 30 days to find out if it was worth it.

ADDITIONAL VIDEO NOTES:
Questions:
How does it know where to mow?
Does this ever get stuck?
How long does the battery last?
What does it do with the grass it cuts?
Does the lawn look uneven if it runs over a mini pothole?
Can it mow at night?
How loud is it?
How hands-off is it?
Can someone just steal it?
And now that I have used this for four weeks, I have answers to those and more.
Let’s start with the first question of how does it know where to mow.
This is the Mammotion Luba 2. I will have an affiliate link below, so if you decide to buy it, you could really help me out a lot by using my link.
Sensors - 3 ways to detect surroundings
Binocular vision + radar
RTK
Bumper
Navigation with phone
Perimeter
No-go zones
Channels
Obstacle avoidance - 3 levels
Second question was does it ever get stuck?
Driving setup - AWD - up to 38 degree slope
It only gets stuck when it thinks it is somewhere else and runs into a wall, or if it drives over a stick. Never stuck on terrain
Tip: configure the settings to do interior before perimeter
3. Cutting quality
The blades are just razor blades
The height is adjustable in the app - 1”-2.7” or 2.2”-4” - I got the taller model
It has rain sensors, so it will not mow on a rainy day or the day after
4. 4 What about the battery?
Introduce the home base
Setup when you unbox the robot
For my lawn, which is about 8000 square feet, it takes 6 hrs but the battery does not last that long
Battery recharges about twice in that time, making the total job 10 hrs - typical battery is about 2.5-3hrs per charge
5. 5 Smoothness
Somehow different from zero turn with wide flat lines
Still looks great though
Better for grass to just have a quarter inch every other day vs 1-2” every week or biweekly
Also not big blades of dead grass clippings to kill grass or require raking
6. 6 Can it mow at night?
No. Bad battery management too. It'll be almost sunset and the Luba is charging with 80% in the tank and 30% of the lawn left to mow. Then it'll die in the dark
7. 7 How loud is it?
Probably my favorite aspect of this is the volume. Unlike any large mower, this is inaudible.
8. 8 How hands-off is it?
Maintenance
Blades
Supervision
Lawn work still required
Trimming
Picking up sticks and pine cones
9. 9 Can it be stolen?
No GPS tracking, so if it is stolen, you cannot locate it
If stolen, it will become operationally worthless
I recommend putting an airtag in it. You can take the front bumper apart
Regardless, I love this device. I think it is perfect for busy people with disposable income, older relatives who may not be as mobile, people who work from home and hate loud mowers, busy families, people who travel a lot

Wow! Possibly the best reviewer I have seen on KZfaq. Mike has the rare talent to explain his thought process concisely and in a authentic manner. The Luba 2 review was terrific. So many questions I have thought were addressed in a direct and comprehensive manner. I am close to purchasing a robot mower. There seems to have been an burst of mowers that have come to market in the past 12 months. I'm anticipating a shake out both in quality and pricing within the next 1-2 years. This is a huge market waiting to explode. The company that gets just a little bit better can own this market. It seems there are a couple good contenders.

This was a super great video describing the lawnmower. I currently have a word landroid. It sounds like a combination of an edge wire and the lubo to get a really tight edge.. I like being able to adjust the edge by moving the wire and it lets me have a tight boundary, to stop the need to line trim.

Great review, thanks. The one thing it lacks, is the ability to mark an area, in an area, for it to mow. Most robot vacuums have this feature, but not the Mammotion Luba. The blades also jam and you have to spend a lot of time freeing them up.

How much tree coverage do you have? With the original Luba, they recommended a pretty open lawn, but with the camera on the 2 i heard it handles the overhead cover better, and so far this is what I'm waiting to hear since i have a few bigger trees

6:35 Those blades appear to be reversable, so after a few months then they're blunt, unscrew and turn them around and you have a new sharp blade again. I have the same on my Moebot mower (which of course I named Moe!). Most robot mowers absolutely can run at night. If yours isn't returning home properly then it sounds like something is wrong, either software or maybe the mapping setup. The Moebot is priced from AUD $1000-1200 (USD 640-770) depending on the battery you choose which is based on the size of your yard (6,400-27,000 sq feet). Edges are more accurate with the boundary wire but you still have to whipper-snapper the last few inches if there's a vertical wall etc, tho if you have a garden or concrete you can avoid that. These last for years - so long as they're looked after. There's no oiling etc but you will need to change the blades at least annually. Mine runs daily in summer and weekly in winter and is into its 4th year.

This is the successor to my venerated "Yard-2 D2" (Worx Landroid) that served me fairly well for over 3 years. As soon as this hit the market, I bought it, and I can say it is better in every way. That old perimeter wire was the bane of my existence. Mine probably had 20 patches in it between utility workers digging and neighbors' mowers and even animals digging etc. Plus it took me almost a full day to install. Once I got the base station up, this took me less than an hour to "train." It almost never gets stuck where my old 2wd landroid would lose traction and just dig with the wheels until the battery died. Since I could only run the old perimeter wire through expansion joints in my driveway it left a large portion unusable for myself and guests, lest the dumb thing gets stuck under a car and run over. Now I designate a narrow corridor for it to cross the driveway, freeing it up for its intended use. Pattern mowing is a game changer. Its not some dumb random pattern that eventually catches everything. It's properly mowed and looks the part. While not perfect, I can't see anything wrong with my Luba2 "C-3P-Mow" that can't be fixed in software. Very pleased with mine
@MrAAgabriel
@MrAAgabriel 24 күн бұрын
I hear and agree with you. I have Landroids with the perimeter wire and they served me well but it's time to move on. The Landroid Vision looks interesting, but that even requires more "wire" to prevent it from going into a neighbor's yard unlike this one.

I really want to buy this, but at $3K, I need to make sure it actually does what I want. I currently have a Worx Landroid L and the thing is a nightmare. Rarely does it cut more than an hour before getting stuck somewhere. This seems to be a lot better with its AWD and omni wheel.s The heavy weight, to me, is a benefit. I want something sturdy mowing my lawn. I'll do more research, but I may pull the trigger on this.

@enriquebenedicto9429 24 күн бұрын
Hi. I'm not sure if I'm just not seeing the info somewhere. But which model did you get exactly? You mention around @8:15 that your lawn is around 7000-8000 sq ft. As such, did you got for the 1000 model, which is supposed to cover ~10800 sq ft. ? Or did you go for the 3000 model to give yourself some extra margin? I would think the 3000 model would be capable of doing your entire lawn in one pass. That might also answer my own question. I have 33000 sq ft., which is 0.758 acre. That's slightly above the 3000 range. So would I be stretching the limit of the 3000? I'm thinking I might just suck it up and spend an extra $300 to buy the 5000.

@@MikeOBrienMedia Wow. Ok. And it still needs charging to finish the job! I pulled the trigger today, and I now wonder if I made a mistake in ordering the 3000 myself, given my property is 3080m2. If your 3000 still needs charging for a 745m2 lawn, I might need like 3 changes to do mine!
@JayWozz
@JayWozz 7 күн бұрын
@@enriquebenedicto9429 Looking at the mow time and charge time, the 3000 model and up all have the same battery. The only difference seems to be a software limitation (possibly hardware) in the amount of memory storage for pathing. I think you made the right choice, but it is disappointing that it takes so long to mow and can't do it at night, and not even spending more money (on a bigger model) can avoid the problem.

I've been using the first gen for 2+ months. Set up is tedious but once it's done, it works really well. I fired the landscape company since they destroyed my grass with the 800 Lbs zero turn mowers. Sod does not tolerate compaction... Yard maintenance companies are hugely incompetent in my experience. This allows you to fire them.

I've had mine for 3 weeks. Does have GPS. if someone tries stealing it, the app should let you know it's leaving your designated area. To use the physical buttons you have to press home then start. They do this, so something bumps the buttons it won't automatically go home. I am 50/50 on this unit and think it fits a more suburban back yard. I don't think there is much of a reliability difference between luba 1 and 2. I feel as if the cameras don't do anything. It's slow to cut. I have the 5000h and my backyard is 2/3rd of an acres it takes 1 full day plus some of the next to cut. I can sacrifice the cut quality to speed up mow time. The problem I really have is when it rains for 2 days on and off let the grass dry for a day. The luba barely can cut the lawn again at my desired height. I have to mow the same area multiple times, lower the height each time to get the desired height. It could take most of the week to do just my back lawn. I think for people under .5 acres or your typical suburban backyard. When you start getting into bigger yards for the price I think it is starting to slack a little. I think battery life and cutting speed/power should be a bit more than what you get. I pulled mine off the charger to do a 5 minute perimeter line change it took 15% of the battery. I think this unit is 80% there to being in everyone's lawn. For the price I think you should get more. 1k to 1.5k I'd be happy with it. For 3k after taxes and what not I am not 100% satisfied. If I was on the fence about one, I'd wait 1-2 more years. Seems like technology is moving fast with robot lawn mowers. I had one of the first robot vacuums. Thing would roll down my stairs. Now I have one that mops, Cleans itself, and is 200 times better at cleaning the floors. That was in 10 years ish.

Here are my comments you didn't talk about: 1. It is better not to do the lawn when it is raining as the grass builds up around the blades under the deck and you will get a stuck cutting motor or the performance will degrade. 2. The fact it does not pick up the cut off grass, it means when you walk through the lawn, you always have grass clippings that will stick to your shoes, and you will bring it back home. 3. Better don't cut the grass before it is noon time as the dawn makes the grass wet and you are back to point number 1. 4. The robot is unable to handle very small area's. 5. It is not only branches that are a problem, also mole hills. They can make the robot get stuck. 6. The software is not multi user. If someone logs in with the same account, the other one will be kicked out or will see something that the robot has lost connection. Why not make it multi user and if you change anything, the other user will go into read only mode. 7. You better have a very good wifi coverage all over the lawn area. If not, you will need a sim card to compensate the loss of signal. It means extra charges and costs 8. It is not wild life friendly as it will kill eagles and other animals. This could be avoided if the front camera would also detect warm blood animals and has a thermal camera sensor 9. The Luba cuts the lawn very slowly. I have the 5000 version, but my lawn is only half of this size. I thing their 5000m² claim is overrated. 10. What about battery life. What is the cost of a new battery. Knowing that a li-ion battery has a lifespan of 500 recharge cycle. So if you have a 2500 m² lawn for a 5000m² luba version, I suppose you will need a battery replacement every year and a half. I haven't seen any information yet regarding replacement batteries. 11. They should have used non sticky, water repellent coating on the robot and under the deck. 12. The blade disk and the blade are not protected! I have see the ones of Husqvarna having a metal disk that spins independently from the main cutting disk. So the blades get full impact when it drives over branches, stones, or other obstacles. 13. Due to the fact there is no protective disk under the cutting disk, the screws heads of the screws might tear off and you end up to have issues to remove these screws when a replacement needs to be done. 14. The cost price of electricity is a fraction of the cost price of the fuel you have to spend on a traditional combustion lawn mower or tractor. 15. The front bumper has a cover and the bumper itself. A fence wire might get stuck between the white front bumper plastic and the bumper itself. I am not sure what is the durability of this white section of the front bumper. I'm surprised they haven't thought of having the white cover of the font bumper not going all around the edges of the main front bumper so a fence wire would not get stuck in between. 16. Keep in mind, the RTK needs a 160° horizon view to get it working correctly. If you have a tick tree garden, you might get into issues. Also keep in mind it is better to take the RTK inside during winter season or if there is a storm. This means, remapping your lawn again. 17. Keep in mind, your mower also need a very good satellite view. So if you are surrounded with many houses, apartments, or other objects, it might not work efficiently. If it has low positioning, the mower STOPS working Overall, I love my Luba, but I think there are some improvements in design. The software can also improved, but overall, it is the best robot lawn mower out there and I hope they will keep on improving the design but also the software

Regarding "Stealing" .. the Luba-2 has a build in LORA chip for communication with the LORA network. which makes it trackable for the vendor. You can see that chip in the app. This is also described in the support options - in case it get's stolen you could contact Mammotion and they will try to figure out where it actually is. Cool. But it´s useless unless it´s 100% hands-off, which it isn´t. There´s almost as much work involved as with a classic mower. Still need to trim the edges. I can push my gas mower completely flush with the wall, and it has enough power to ´´suck in´´ the grass, no need to trim. It can suck up small debris, there´s no need to pick that stuff up. It has a mulching function too. And those little razor blades on robot mowers dull fast, you constantly need to keep replacing them because they don´t spin fast enough to cut the grass with dull blades. And with almost $3000, i could just pay a landscaping company (or a local kid) $100 a month for 3-4 years to do it all for me and be truly hands-off. I don´t expect the lifespan of these devices to be much longer either. Anyway, pushing a lawnmower around is a great way to get my daily steps in, so i´ll just keep doing it :)

>sucks in grass No, trimming the edges is always needed. Also, this runs frequently for a consistent lawn. Good luck paying someone $100 a month for 8+ mows. Exercise? I prefer to burn my calories (and time) in more fun forms like BJJ.

Don't get me started on HOAs. It's a common thing and I would never buy a house in one. The idea is to maintain the value of everyone's home and keep the neighborhood nice. But yeah, they fine you if you don't mow frequently enough or if you want to remove your grass and have a garden or nice landscaping or anything.

I've been running various robo mowers for several years and my grass is visibly healthier looking than my neighbors. This video really doesn't do the quality justice

Yeah I filmed this in early April when my grass was just coming out of winter so even today, it is far more lush and green than it was when I filmed

$2000 is how much I pay a lawn care company to mow my lawn for the summer.

I figured that was a common price. Unfortunately, this doesn't weed whack the edges, but if you're ok with a 15 min job once a week, then this could be a good value

@@MikeOBrienMedia If the mower lasts longer than one season then it's worth the price.

Our local landscapers wanted $75 a pop and mine needs cutting at least weekly and sometimes almost every other day with the right weather.

I guess one has to give some credit to the manufacturer for featuring your video on their home page. I was a quick "NO" once I saw the prices, but your video convinced me this is not ready for prime time.

The downside of these short term reviews is they don’t detail the battery life after 1-5 years. I would say that’s my biggest fear with these (my robot vacuum doesn’t inspire confidence)

Good question. I have not tried using this with dogs in the yard at the same time. Has anyone else tried this?

Mine just runs up and sniffs it. She doesn't know what to make of it. It is plastic, though, so if a dog were inclined to chew, they'd make short work of it. I'd be worried about the wheels mainly
