My husband works in apartment maintenance and people leave their plants all the time. They're usually neglected. Someone here was using a monstera as an ashtray on their balcony in full sun. It was so sad and sick and horrible. I used an i.d. app and I was sure it was lying when it said it was a monstera. I gave it new soil and lots of intensive care and sure enough, that's what it is. Within 60 days it replaced every sick leaf and even added another. It's my favorite plant and I never even wanted a monstera. It's my baby.

I am always rescuing plants from the big box stores. I love doing it and giving them a second chance 🙂

I've just rescued a huge lemon lime dracaena from my local supermarket for under £4! It had a number of leaves turning brown but lovely new leaves coming up in the centre of the 3 or 4 branches. I know they don't like to be left in very damp conditions, but the soil was like dust it was so dry! I've given it a good drink and made sure it's drained through, trimmed all the brown leaves and now have it under a grow light, so cross fingers... now I've seen your video I'm hopeful I've given it the best chance! 🤞🙂

I'm a such a big rescuer from my grocers "kill cart," that they know me when I walk thru the doors. Some didn't make, but most did. The ones that are still with me are doing beautifully. I rescued an Alocasia Sarian (bought it at $1.99 USD), and that bugger can bring me at least $75-150 at least if I choose to sell the rhizomes!! Never underestimate the discounted prices at the "kill cart", it really can bring you happiness when you saved a living thing and watch it thrive 🥰👍

I only have twelve plants but nine of them were on their last legs when I got them. I brought them home and did all these things and they are now beautiful.

I just salvaged a Monstera adansonii and a variety of Dieffenbachia yesterday from a local store. They'd been exposed to freezing temperatures. The Monstera, especially, was struggling, and dry as a bone. Neither had bugs, so that was a positive. I trimmed off dead growth and severely damaged leaves. Today, both appear to be doing well. I've been wanting an MA for a while, but I rarely see them around here, so I was ecstatic to find one, even if it's in rough shape. I was stoked, as I watched this video, to see that I'd already done everything you recommend EXCEPT checking the roots. I've already learned enough from your other videos to piece this procedure together, so THANKS! Off to check those roots now!

Having worked in floral departments and nurseries I very have often taken these sad plants home that might have been tossed , I adopted these abused plants and put them in what I lovingly refer to as hospital. With a bit of care they have thrived and are now in middle if not old age….

Interesting idea to use dehumidifier water as plants' water. You could easily put in a dead simple one in the bathroom and suck out the humidity there instead of firing up the extraction fan while showering/bathing I bet.

We see way too many big box stores selling plants that simply aren't cared for properly by the staff and yes also on the clearence rack. They typically get over water or under watered or just not in the right environment. Too close to opening and closing doors, inadequate humidity..etc. We scored a snake plant towards the end of 2022 on the clearence rack and nothing was wrong with it, other than dry soil. It was marked originally at $30-$35 and we got it for like $15, we still have it and it's grown wonderfully.

I bought my cats a spider plant for their room and I hung it right above their window bed. They love to play with the babies and clean their teeth on their leaves. It’s the only plant they touch.

I know Calatheas can be VERY sensitive to things like fluoride and chlorine, and I assume that's what Spider plants are sensitive to. How many of our houseplants do you suppose are probably sensitive to the chemicals and minerals found in tap water, or possibly even well water (ours in this region is hard and alkaline)? I'm wondering if it might be better to water many of our plants with distilled water instead of tap water. I use an aquarium dechlorinator in tap water for my plants (we don't have fluoride in our water supply), but I'm thinking maybe I need to switch to distilled for at least some of them - like the spider plants and calatheas. Maybe others, too? I've got some houseplants that are thriving, growing like gang busters, but others that have been meh in their overall performance. Spider plants is one of those. The water might be the issue for that, I'm thinking. Maybe too much minerals in our hard, alkaline water for that variety of plant?

Nice, this might be the first moisture meter demonstration in the real situation. And who knew, the soil really did look dry. Would've never guessed it was healthily moist. Did you consider to yourself the weight of the pot when you held it and gauged if it needs water? Like did your experience clue you that you need to check with moisture meter to be sure? You recommended holding the pots in one of the videos and I've been getting accustomed to lifting the pots when the top soil has dried to see if the pot is heavy or light, and I found that even if it's not definitive, it has prevented me from watering a plant with good moistness before it's time and most of my plants are happier and don't go through occasional overwatering anymore. Especially during winter time I would've killed the plants because the change to watering frequency was so dramatic.

Your advice on waiting until the soil is dry doesn't work then and I have a muehlenbeckia complexa that basically demands that I have a vacation waterer bulb thing in it all the time or it will drop all leaves - but then it also gets too soggy. Can you please make an episode about thirsty plants like that and how best to care for them?

So the only way to remedy brown tips is to cut off the entire stem? My mother has gotten forgetful about watering her three house plants. Every leaf on her peace lily now has a brown tip. I was hoping I could clip off the brown tips and still have pretty leaves.😟

I'd be more concerned with thrips, spider mites and meely bugs. Fungus gnats just feed on fungus and sadly are in the soil. They're the least to be worried about.
