She seems to be a rare case that still shows a great deal of humanity even in north korea, talking about motherly love, being happy with her mom and worrying about her mom more than being hungry.

My wow moment in this video was realizing that basic geography isn't universal. Songmi talking about being from the interior of the country and not really knowing where the borders are, was eye opening, but completely understandable in hindsight. This is the first video I've watched on this channel, so I don't know anything about either of these people. That's soon to change, I ordered both of their books. This conversation is so fascinating I found myself not even paying attention to their beauty. Looking forward to these books.

*Each person can have 5 potatoes* with these words the testimony of a guy who escaped Russia during the cold war begins. This book came to my mind when I read the title to this video. The above words were spoken to a child of 4 or 5 years when the father tried to explain the living situation in his home-country. It was a black US-guy who became a communist, and went to Russia in the 1920, I read the book sometimes prior to 1992.

Your story is saddest story I've ever heard, before reading it, I couldn't even imagine the horrors you went through. I so much like and appreciate your channel having grown up in the divided Germany in the 1980s in West-Germany very close to the border with East-Germany, so that the Cold War was so close to me. Later I did an MA-degree in International Relations on North Korea. In my opinion the world needs to know what is happening in North Korea.

Speaking as a Westerner, whilst I do feel as if we have strides to go to make aspects of capitalism better for people (for example more honest, philanthropic, less greedy, and fairer overall), I 100% agree with statements made by Yeonmi. Poverty is the main issue we need to address- the sooner we assist people out of poverty, the better. In addition, the message of one must not allow governments to assume control over us for the sake of our safety or freedom is an important one. I have yet to become more familiar with the content of your channel, or your wider work (However, I ordered your book from the local library). Frankly, I find you incredibly informative (with regards to North Korea), insightful and utterly inspiring. I'm sorry that you suffered under true tyranny. I'm trilled you escaped and manage to find your way to us. Thank you for reaching out to the world and telling us your story. We have a lot to learn from you.

Im really happy that people are spreading awearness about the situation in North Korea. Im only 14 and really want to help but dont know how? We only talk about other countries and their situations in school but never about North Korea. I really wish all the best and will help all i can to spread awerness. Its such an inportant subject and shoud be talked about much more!

I was just crying so hard at your simple but powerful moment sitting on the walkway in Canada watching the people, the families walk by, and realizing you were experiencing what love looks like and what it should feel like and then to have love directed at you with a simple Hello from 2 strangers. And you are so humble and unassuming that you didn’t even realize someone could intend something like that for you, so you looked behind you to see if it was meant for someone else. 😭 I am from Canada and I am so happy you had that moment here in this country. The whole world needs these simple moments to heal itself of all horrible, oppressive tyrant dictator narcissists. Please take care of yourself and come back to Canada anytime:)

One of the wonderful things about the internet has been the ability to study North Korea. I love the individual stories but look forward to the big story when all of the people of North Korea can join the free world. For days I've been listening to survivor stories of people escaping NK and I'm sure there were angels with them. Unfortunately, not all of the made the journey. There's no other explanation for one who is starving to have the energy to travel, let alone avoid hypothermia from the cold weather and waters. These are truly miracles.

I often wonder about my mom's family that got split up. Some got pushed into N. Korea, some were "departed" by Chinese or Japanese soldiers, and some walked on foot further in S. Korea while still getting shot by U.S. soldiers. It was many years of fleeing, no fires to cook or keep warm because that would attract attention. ..my mom still remembers it, having to walk on foot and seeing so many deceased people and being shot at. I'm glad she made it here and became a (very proud) citizen. I know my grandma worried about her sister that was forced into N. Korea. One can only hope she was able to escape from there too.

Am absolutely touched and moved by the story from the beautiful North Korean lady. It's just teaching me to practice more gratitude. Am so grateful for my country because I enjoy all the forms of Freedom I desire as compared to her mother country. I get to move, eat, dress, learn, travel, worship whatever thing I desire in my heart. This journey has taught me to really be grateful for my Country, the small things and My President. It's really not easy for people in other countries like North Korea. Although with all due respect I very much respect their President because all leaders come from God. I only pray he graces more empathy towards his people and gives them the freedom to enjoy all these aspects life has to offer.
