Over the last several years the moving and storage industry has seen a major decrease in CDL drivers. This issue has forced many companies to start looking for alternative ways to meet their customer's needs. For this reason, the use of under CDL, 26-foot trucks with automatic transmissions have become an industry standard.
Today we're taking you along as we begin the restoration of our 2006 Freightliner (M2 106 Business Class) standard cab moving truck. This truck had a 26-foot aluminum dry freight body built by Morgan Truck Body. Soon it will have a new 26-foot furniture body built by US Truck Body. We have chosen to restore this truck for many reasons, but five reasons in particular stand out. First this truck is Under CDL (26,000 lbs.), meaning anyone with a class C license can drive it. Second this truck is equipped with an automatic transmission, and again that means anyone can drive it. Third, this truck has the proven reliable Cat C7 diesel engine. Those engines have been proven to last for 400,000+ miles. Fourth, we have chosen to restore this truck rather than purchase a new one, this truck is pre-emissions. That means it will last much longer than newer trucks that have DEF systems that tend to fail over time. DEF systems are riddled with problems and costly repairs. Finally, the fifth most important reason we have chosen to restore this truck is cost. It is exponentially cheaper to restore this truck than purchase a new moving truck. The cost of restoring this truck including the new truck body, will come in somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000. A new moving truck costs between $125,000 and $150,000. It is safe to say the risk is worth the reward in this case. By restoring this truck, we can potentially save $140,000 over the cost of a brand-new moving truck. Once we are done with the restoration, we will crunch the numbers and give you the total cost saved over the price of a new moving truck.
