Whenever you and Chris are bringing an old relic back to life, it reminds me of the time i was re-building my old '47EL. That transmission is fixable. You need flux (20 mule team borax), an oxy/ace number 2 welding tip, and a pure aluminum bar. You can use pipe fitting flux paste if you want to prep the surface, but as a bladesmith I prefer borax. Put the flux on your surface and heat it with the torch till it melts the flux. Then build up your surface with the aluminum rod. After it is built up you can sculpt it with a flat grinder in a dye grinder the drill and tap it. Don't give up on that gem. I have tigged those cases back together from a complete split and rode them for years before someone offered me more than I liked the bike. The repair I described my dad was taught to do in the army on messenger bikes during Vietnam. I've used it building lowrider cars and restoring old Indian motorcycles. Did it two years ago to repair an engine mount on a yamaha xj650 chopper I built from a box of parts. It can be done. Just a little practice on some scrap metal to develope your touch on the torch. I mean you are already planning to scrap it what will it hurt for you to try. If you are gonna bring old bikes back why not learn the old skills to go with it. Honestly if had the means I would gladly be on my way to show you.

Good morning 🌅, great job guys, France. I am in my 70s , your bike reminds me when I was 16/7, I passed my test when I was 17 , I had Norton and one especially Norton dominator , it was crusty like your bike , I stripped it and rebuilt it but I turned into a chopper , Got back into bakes in the early 90s until 2019 , when I sold everything, and just recently purchased a 2003 Deuce, it was crusty. It wouldn’t run properly, just spent the last 3 weeks rebuilding, primer and part of the gearbox, carb , ignition system, all running, ready for a test, It is great being back on 2 wheels,

The most fascinating days of my early bike-wrenching years was when Bernie Guindon (the national President of Satan's Choice MC) sent me into his trailer of bike parts to find a Star Hub to fix a friend's bike that had mangled a bearing. I sorted through 16' of old motorcycle parts before finding the piece, but I found it. I was 19, and had studied Harley parts for about 5 years already. It was a joyous experience sifting through that trailer of parts. I dream about doing it again, just as you did when you went through that trailer. Your job has always been my dream. Enjoy!

Love this one. Reminds me of a DL I fixed 60 years ago. Everything original except the infamous bevel gear generator drive. Had been replaced with a V-belt. Crankpin worn 1/16. Rode it for two years, always reliable. Then went on with more modern bikes. But running when I bought it, so no wonder you could get this one going.

Have spoken to several teenagers who complain that there are no sources of knowledge for things(not on google) or a way to follow a dream( restore cars/motorcycles). When I tell them to find someone(usually very much older) that has done it they do not comprehend that learning that way is possible much less that a real enthusiast would be willing to help(cheap to free parts are a thing) and may be as or more excited to find someone with the same passion. Time has come to start taking back apprentices to keep the knowledge.

Man brother what a beautiful find..I know that there's a few barns and whatnot I know he has been doing for 50 years that I've known him. He had a Harley Davidson repair shop for all my life. His one step son was a baby grew up with his brother a few years older and he made sure that them boys were hands on. I'd love to say his name but I know that it would get back and he has been retired and he and his brother just rode around in his custom van and enclosed trailer buying anything antique besides bikes. But before he'd buy antiques he made sure that it was sold when they got back. There's a lot of the old Harley shops that closed but I'm talking they were 10-15+ generation owned and they would just put mainly Harley Davidson and Indian parts NOS cases of stuff that they got when they bought out a old boy dealership and private shops. Upstate NY and just across the Canadian border finding storage units just packed. The owner would never sell for it was supposed to be their retirement money and end up passing away. And the storage units weren't getting paid for the family never knew about them. And you see those shows that auction off the storage units for the highest price. A guy from Albany NY hit the jackpot on 4 or 5 storage unit that had complete bike's unmolested and rolls of pans and knuckles and crates of parts all hide behind old couches and furniture when they opened the doors you can only look in but can't get in and look at was there. Guy got them for $400-$1200 but rumor has it he knew that the old guy had the stuff but nobody knew exactly where. Happy to see these bikes and parts going were the belong congratulations brother. Love it you know your Dad's smiling and probably guided you to these places. God bless you and yours and the Crew. I'd love to make it down to your place and take a tour, 58 years old but health and living on SSI doesn't cut it worked my whole life for a Dr prescribe me something that just ate up my organs. No pity party here bro I have a cellphone and learned how to do KZfaq and stream free TV all I've got. I'm blessed it just started cool I'm done texting great job guys
