This happened to my most beloved record... I was playing The Pale Empreror's Deluxe Vinyl Edition, which I found after some months of trying to get a mint copy of it. So I went home and decided to play it, placed the rercord, took all dust away from it, and I was about to drop the needle when my mom walked into my room in a hurry and accidentally hit the desk, which made me freak out and drop the needle on the record at 2-2,5 centimiters away from it... I just stood there as the music started playing, and decided to drop the needle on the 1st track, one I got to track 2, y hear this loud af pop, that was continuously repeating itself over and over again... That is my favourite record ever, pressed on gorgeous 180g white vinyl, just getting absolutely wrecked... I was dead inside for 2 or 3 hours after that.

“Track three was kaputt.”😅 I’m very pleased to hear German words in an English sentence, very nice. Ja, fortunately most of the superficial scratches are barely audible, but your misfortune is deeply shocking! Sometimes it’s better to have an automatic turntable additionally, as you are with friends and can’t handle your records with care as you normally would do. Greetings from 🇩🇪

German here as well. I just recently learned that "kaputt" is actually more common in the English language than you might be aware of. Sure it's not used as frequently as words like "broken" or "damaged" but I have heard it being used in English sentences quite a few times now. It seems like "kaputt" is used as a more comedic replacement for the other more common synonymes. And I also believe that it is used if something is very badly damaged. Like even more than "wrecked" or "destroyed". I was just as surprised the first time I've heard it.

Modern turntables usually come with a 'locking clip' to hold the tone-arm in place. It's good practice to get in the habit of always using the clip every time you want to flip or change a record and only open it when you're ready to put the needle down to play. Cue-up levers can be fixed/adjusted. There's usually a screw in the middle of the banana-shaped thing under the tone arm that you can adjust to where you like it.

Sometimes I play records during home parties. And sometimes at these moments I get a little drunk. One day, when I just decided to listen to one of my favorite and rare records, I found a huge scratch on it along all the tracks on the side A. Apparently, I made this scratch myself when I was drunk at one of these parties. Thank God, the scratch did not affect the sound in any way, but I was still in shock. Here’s my story. So my mum knew that I really wanted a turntable, and saved up to buy me my first record player, which was a really good, brand new AT-LP7. I fell in love with it. Unfortunately a couple months later I clumsily dropped the dust cover onto the tone arm, which caused the tone arm to skim over the platter, damaging the stylus, and creating multiple chips in the smooth matte black surface of the turn table base. I was so gutted, that I couldn’t look at my turntable for a month. To this day, every time I spin a record I beat myself up about it. But I eventually moved on, and I regained my love for it. Now every time I move the dust cover I’m extremely cautious. Well I guess I learnt my lesson, and will never make that mistake again!

Wow Jarrett, I really feel for you, I bet that was a shock seeing that happen to your record. I think we've all done something like that at some point. That's why I use an automatic turntable now. But even a couple of those can have issues when dropping the needle. I once had a turntable, can't remember what make it was, that when the tonearm went to beginning of the record, it would drop down onto the record so fast the needle sometimes jumped right across the lead in grooves into the first track, thus missing a few seconds of the music. It was a right pain and just really bugged me. Needless to say I didn't have that record player very long.

I had all their music digitally but I couldn’t find them on vinyl ANYWHERE and I was so pleased to find out they were selling their album on vinyl at their merch table and I even managed to get the whole band to sign the cover for me. It was really late when I got home so I didn’t get to play it until the next day. I pop it on the turn table, drop the needle, aaaaaand it immediately starts skipping. I was so devastated. I still cherish the album cause it is a banger start to finish (seriously all killer no filler check it out) and it’s signed by the whole band but I haven’t been able to replace it since.

I still use it for taking the needle off again. Nothing disastrous has happened yet. My worse mishap was when I dropped an inexpensive, very common 90s house 12" and it bounced against the sharp corner of the table my turntable was sat on. A similarly painful experience, and left some noticeable marks, but absolutely no damage to the audio. I'm just very lucky I guess.

A similar event happened to me to. Once when I was locking the tonearm, I bumped it off the rest and it slid across the record and there was the really loud screeching noise. Thankfully, the record and stylus were fine. The tonearm just took a bit of a joyride

That's why I paid extra for the cue lever. Some people can do it manually but what if like something random scares me and i accidentally drop the needle too hard

song off the day , Diane - Therapy? yes,the que lever has a oil filled damper (most of them) so it doesn’t drop to fast and sometimes the oil will de solve ,you might need to refill the damper with some new oil , which you buy at the turntable seller , because it has to have a certain viscosity so the arm doesn’t move to fast or slow

What about when you put the tonearm in position, drop the que lever and it goes either left or right? I know my turntable is old and has been abused by loads of people, I just wonder if it happens to most turntables at some point?

Alteration Inunofficial check if the tt is level , adjust the anti skate in free float so the arm and stylus aren’t moving right to left and up and down ,and check if the lifter (that curved piece) is level as well, you might need to adjust it an make sure the stem goes straight up and down

Song of the day Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles And also the worst damage I’ve ever seen happen to one of my beloved records was when I ordered one online, usually this works great for me because I only get records online if they come from a real record store because they know how to handle them, so I picked The Beatles yellow submarine soundtrack (sealed) and had it delivered in about a week and then it happened... The record was completely warped! I could immediately tell from the packaging because one side was bent upward and when I opened the package and took a close look at the record itself one whole side was completely warped and misshaped. I got a replacement and I just hung the old one on my wall for show because even though it was ruined I still spent money on it and I just felt like I could not throw it away.

Sorry to hear about your loss, but glad you could get a replacement! I'm sure it was a horrifying moment. When I set up my current turntable (Pro-ject Debut Carbon, about 7 years ago), I didn't set the tracking force right, and when I played (possibly New Order's True Faith 12" single) the first beat on the album sent the arm up into the air, luckily I was right there and managed to stop it from coming down hard on the surface, so no damage done..(whew)....I was sweating it for a moment until I realized I hadn't set the downward force...lesson learned. One other horror story everyone should be aware of, I recently picked up a copy of Depeche Mode's Violator, new in shrink from a local store. Beautiful copy, but there was a ugly vinyl burr from the spindle punch out that came loose in the sleeve, and it put an ugly scratch down the entire side 1. The store had no replacements in store or in their warehouse. Luckily it only pops in a couple of spots on one song (and Rhino has been nice enough to tell me that they will look for a replacement for me). But lesson learned : always check your record sleeves!

Hey Jarrett!! Another great video!! That's HEARTBREAKING and I know the pain first hand!! I bought a brand new copy of The Beatles Abbey Road......the VERY FIRST TIME I went to play it I accidentally dropped my record weight on the vinyl putting a HUGE divot in it!! I was crushed but like you....jumped right on Amazon and spent ANOTHER 25 bucks for another copy!! Lesson learned!!

Yes it happened to me except when I had the box cover of a Mofi Ultradisc one step by the tone arm while playing. The lid cover fell over and hit the arm making a horrendous scratch on the record. All of that to take a picture of what was spinning at the time

This exact deer in headlights moment happened to me about a month ago. When I was placing the needle on DSOTM, my hand slipped, and the needle scratched the whole side 2 of the record. Luckily, it doesn’t sound too bad.

I done something similar recently. I was standing over my turntable and I’ve taken out a record from its inner sleeve, the record slipped out of my hand and hit the slip mat, then my needle.......blowing my amp and speakers. Thankfully I had got the amp and speakers from a charity shop, but still not a good thing to happen. My wife told me to buy a new set up and upgrade at the same time. From now on I will be keeping the needle protector on until a record is sitting on the turntable.👍

I once bought a rare LP pressing, in near mint condition. On the train ride home I was looking at it, admiring it. The train slammed on the brakes, sending the record flying out of my hands and sliding across the seat on front of me, scratching it to death. Luckily it was only on the surface and all you heard was a slight brushing sound when it passed under the stylus.

I had the same deer in headlights feeling just the other day. I just got a new turntable, leveled the tonearm and calibrated the stylus. I had also built this thing to go over my TT so that it's fully protected from my cats. At this time, my cats were pretty hyper and running around so, just as you were, I was in a hurry. I always use the antistatic brush before playing so I move the tonearm over the record not realizing I hadn't lifted the cue-up. So I moved it over dropping it right onto the record and it bounced twice. Just "Pop" "Pop" right out of the speakers. I felt my stomach drop. THANKFULLY my record is fine! And the new set-up sounds great. But not a noise I ever want to hear again lol I was supposed to be relaxed listening to some Bill Evans but ended up anxious the whole time hoping there was no damage. So yeah, seriously don't be in a rush with records!

I always keep the power off whenever I load or flip a record because this legit is a big fear of mine when playing records. Vinyl is pretty delicate unlike a cd because each of those microscopic grooves is what makes the sound through vibrating the needle, so I imagine the grooves are really delicate. So glad your mistake didn't make it impossible to get a replacement!

a few weeks ago i was trying out my new record of room on fire by the strokes on my brothers turntable since i am upgrading to one with the same stylis and wanted to hear what it sounded like, when i dropped the needle with the level i was horrified when it dropped at maximum speed toward it instead of slowly lowering it. it jumped and skidded across track 2. it left one extremely large surface level scratch mark and one small deep scratch, but I was insanely lucky that the deep scratch was during the loudest part of the song so when i played over it i couldn't even hear the scratch being played on through the speakers. super lucky but now i am VERY careful of tonearm levers

Actually what happened to my MOFI Santana Abraxas record was that I was playing it on a rainy day, head full of acid, and I left my record next to a window and some rain droplets fell on the record. I noticed the day after that those droplets dried leaving spots on the record. Now I always take extra care when handling vinyl while on acid. Like they're gods being played.
