Have you ever used the water based primer for this repair....I was turned on to it a few years ago and it works amazing for the situation you had. Just asking if you have ever used it...the stuff I use will stick to anything like crazy. It will stick to a glazed ceramic tile like iron....I have no idea the voodoo in that stuff but it will not lift the edges

HAD the power cord on my shoulder to stop it dragging while buffing the hood, cord caught on the buff head and tried to strangle me....

Been there before....once that buffer takes off youre going for a ride. Happens so fast its dangerous. It can damage the car paint or come back on your skin or clothes. Blend job is excellent. Customers want that in the end.

Done that with the buff and masking, like you I just saved it. A smaller person would not have been able to hold that buff back when it caught. You got lucky. Need to get 'Christine' away to fuck before it burns the workshop down. There have been a few cars over the years were every step of the repair has been one fight after another and it wears you down too much, glad you are a patient guy 🤬.

Can you get good results with this repair on a vehicle that has been painted for many years. Maybe a very small dent or rust spot that is repaired and needs to be painted blended to match? Thank you.

Pete, when is it OK to Wet sand (grit)? I remember you saying you don't need to wet sand.

You wet sand when you have scratches or deep swirles that dig into the clear coat.. wet sanding is used for bringing the clear coat in that area down to the same depth as the scratch.. you also wet sand after clear coating an area to blend tape lines or if your clear is too thick in an area. Again wet sanding is for thinning/blending clear coat. if your scratch is so deep you’re to the primer you tape it off and sand all the way to metal and re prime/color/clear. This gets difficult but we all start somewhere.. I started spray canning motorcycle gas tanks.. then moved up to painting a full Vespa.. then to cars.

To err is human, but to really fuck things up you need to forget that you have left the IR lamp on !! I'm experienced in this work and have made too many heat lamp mistakes by getting side tracked or distracted with another job. 90% of the time it has been on dark paintwork. I have melted (deformed) motorcycle fairings, bumper covers and blistered fillers and primers. The worst however was an ALU door on an Audi, straight as repair but buckled the fuck out of it forgetting the heat lamp. Repair of that beyond me so as new 'used' door fitted, very expensive mistake. Now I set a 30 min plug timer so it goes off by itself.

I very rarely use a headlamp but you’re exactly right. You can’t walk away from it. Good it’s on the timer. I’m going to start using one myself. 🤙🤙
