Even if your partner doesn’t say anything, you should always be conscious about the space you use and how it can be unfair to the household if you’re taking an excessive amount of space. In the end this is all just stuff and holds zero importance to the things that really matter.

Hey Ralph, I totally understand where you're coming from and am glad that the preservation of the arcade nostalgia didn't sour your love of the hobby. It's very easy to have that happen and there's nothing wrong with having a 'curated' collection of arcade systems and still maintain a love for those that you let go!

Sometimes, less is more. Culling the collection down to what you actually play is a good thing. The arcade hobby is multi facetted and can get out of hand in any one direction easily. I'm glad you found your way and you're now at peace with it all.

Kudos to you finding balance in your life Ralph. We only have so much space in our lives, and too much stuff starts overtaking it both emotionally and physically. It's funny how this vibe of enough is enough is spreading through the collecting community as of late. I think it's a good thing, as being a gamer isn't about hoarding stuff like dragons till you can't move around your living space. It's about enjoying gaming as so many collectors have lost themselves along the way but are coming back to the reasons, they started this journey.

One of the biggest pitfalls in collecting: expansion overtakes enjoyment. Once you get a year into something, ask yourself what’s your end game? What are you building toward? Look at your space and give yourself a cutoff cap. Otherwise you’ll be chasing the rabbit forever.

Kudos to you, RR! This is a great video, and has a lot of great lessons. And that book title is hilarious :) In this day and age, we have so many ways to play every game for arcade or any game system...you don't want the hobby to consume you in a negative way. I have six arcade cabs, some 30 plus consoles, multiple rooms full of machines...and it's too much (not a full time hobby for me even). I don't have time to play them, even like once yearly in some cases, so I'm selling some off. Keep what you really enjoy, you can get a quick fix via emulation in some cases where needed. And in other cases, go to a real arcade (I'm within driving distance of Galloping Ghost, which is NICE). As you said, keep what you need to make yourself happy. Things that frustrate you? Probably no satisfaction in the end is going to win out - sell it, get rid of it. The weight off your shoulders is so freeing! Again, great video, thank you for this!

Losing focus when collecting is a huge thing that a lot of people will go through. I’ve consistently gone through changes with collecting. Now I’ve decided to drop down what I’m collecting, for now, I’ve decided to go ODE and everdrives for retro. Working my way through ODE’s as it’s not cheap but selling off physicals right now to be okay with FPGA is where I’m at either collecting now. It’ll change again soon.

I’ve got just a couple dedicateds I’m happy to keep, then three multicades of dedicated driving, general, and light gun. And really the rest can go, realistically. Most of the journey was finding them, fixing them, and enjoying them with friends for a bit. I’m almost at end game and very happy to be there. Other things to do in life and a limited amount of time in the day to “just do what I want to do”. Enjoy them for what they are, move them when they start to collect too much dust. Hit up the barcade if the itch for more comes around.

Hey my friend, you might not remember me but i made 2 or 3 arcade graphic designs for you a few years back (a sega genesis themed arcade 1up and a snes themed one too...). I just stumbled across this video and its funny because i'm going through the exact same situation right now, i feel like selling most of my stuff! I became addicted to collecting retro merchandise (figures, video games etc.) and realise i put way too much money in it and i'm not happier by any means. I will go with the less is more approach from now on and start using my money to do real activities with my family. Good luck my friend it wont be easy its an addiction that has a tendency to come back overtime...

I definitely understand your decision very well, I had, again, some off-time from the arcade too. Its absolutely how you described it, things can get out of hand VERY quickly. You see an add online of a game you dont have and then there is the "thats my chance, I have to get it" mind in your head :D I have 2 pinballs and about 35 cabs, most of them still unrestored, placed all around my house and at an storage area. I only have a small room where 10 cabs are waiting to get played ( well only 8 are working right now ). I also made a list of my cabs I want to keep, the one im not sure to keep or sell and which can absolutely go --> focus to your fav games. And yeah, there are a few more games i would love to own, but space, the biggest problem. Finding a cheap rental space not only for storing but for some playtime too is non existent here.

I can totally relate. I'm big into retro gaming and collecting Star Wars and we are moving to a new house later this year. I am using this as an opportunity to sell off a lot of stuff that I really don't play and/or care about any longer. I can use the space and money for future stuff and as a bonus, won't need to move it. I'm also finding that quality over quantity is a good way to slow things down a bit.

I can understand your reasoning why you felt the need to offload a lot of your unwanted games because that “arcade hunt” can get insane & out of control very quickly. I too have fallen trap to the very same thing it causes so much unnecessary stress & can lead to a lot of frustration having so many projects around the house. From 2019 to 2023 I probably cycled through over a hundred games easy & finally got my prime collection down to about a solid 40 now. To manage these games on the daily can be draining & ruin your mental health left unchecked for too long. It’s a nice feeling letting go of games & not having to worry about it anymore

Ralph you sold my Victory Road😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀, not made was just looking forward to seeing a video about it. I had it for over 25 years, and sent it to a good home who then got it to you. Good luck on your impulse controle.

I find it interesting that everyone has stopped. Including myself. But no one noticed it. But yeah just how it is. Life happens and I wasn't getting the excitement from doing the videos that no one was watching really or wanting to see original games or lost media. So that was my reason to take a stop to it. I love showing my stuff off but no one was wanting to come over and check it out as well which another reason. Just felt like crap.. But I still love working on this stuff and collecting mostly PCB's now unless that one game shows up, then I am done collecting for now. But if I am not getting any feedback. Then No reason to Continue. Good on you Ralph! Keep it up and don't need to Burn yourself out.

At least we got a semi goodbye video. John’s arcade channel was basically open one day, boarded up the next.

LOL, I'm not quitting, just slowing things down a bit. I love this too much to quit. At some point, I'm sure I will, but I got a good 5 years in me at least. But if I decide to hang it up for good as far as KZfaq goes, I won't leave without saying goodbye and the reasons why I'm leaving. So you guys are stuck with me for a little bit longer...haha. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel.

I feel you; moved from Europe to South East Asia 2 years ago, sold my whole collection with few exceptions; once here, as a collector you naturally start to pick up stuff again. It gets out of hand pretty quick

@@RetroRalph street fighter cocktail, 5 gen 1’s… rampage, galaga ( both w/ berry berry sneaky mod) final fight, street fighter and mortal kombat. I bought pac mania to consolidate but the emulation is atrocious so I regret letting galaga go. Was sick about it so I asked the guy if I could buy it back, we’re working on a trade! 🤞

LOL... nah, she's cool with it to be honest, as long as it doesn't go beyond the garage and the gameroom. Honestly, I felt like the games we're overtaking me. I wouldn't even go into the garage because I felt so overwhelmed by it. From a mental health standpoint, it's been nice to give myself some breathing room. Not sure what the future holds though, space, time and money is always the enemy of the hobby... haha. I did laugh at your comment though but I probably have the coolest most understanding wife ever. The woman is a saint for putting up with my Arcade craziness.

I had an enormous vinyl collection and sold the whole thing off about 18 months ago. I started buying so many albums because I truly love TONS of different types of music. However, I found that I became more of a vinyl collecter than a vinyl listener. I was buying albums just to buy them. Stuff I'd listen to maybe once, then probably never again.

Collecting consoles and fixing things, end up being trophies... some are played for a while then end up collecting dust. Im a game horder and simply can not part ways. I have way to much and very little room in the house. My pcb collecting has really gotten out of hand.. Thank Todd for that and his best offer sales. Fixing stuff tends to take the fun out of it.

Actually, Space is the reason why I got an custom full sized arcade machine that has emulators that you can see on my channel. It has all the games including consoles in one single unit. I have more time to play games and enjoy them, even though they are emulated, I also plan to get a virtual pinball machine so I have all the virtual pinball games and they look realistic just like the real thing. So in the end, I plan to have three machines, one for arcade and console games another one for pinball and another one for driving games. They won’t take a lot of room and I can just boot them up and start playing. If you have time, let me know what you think of arcade. It’s on channel.

I did sort of the same. I have this pretty multi case I custom built but I wasn’t playing it cause I was taking every gig in site for my photography business. I ended up selling 3 cameras and a ton of lenses and stop shooting sports.

I think it makes sense to limit a collection, since beyond a certain point, you just wind up diluting the personal value of each individual machine. I think the hobby is more about "collecting" than "having", since ultimately regardless of circumstances, everyone is limited by space to some degree, so if you keep everything, you eventually must stop adding new ones. Personally, aside from the annual home arcade tour, I don't pay an awful lot of attention to which machines are in Ralph's collection anyway, and mostly I focus on whatever machine(s) is the focus of the video, even if it's at a trade show or something. To the audience, the machines are set decoration.
