In this video we're going to take a look at my latest Arcade Game Pickup, Robocop by Data East!
[Game Information: Source - Wikipedia]
RoboCop is a beat 'em up / run and gun video game developed and published by Data East for arcades in 1988 based on the 1987 film of the same name. It was sub-licensed to Data East by Ocean Software, who obtained the rights from Orion Pictures at the script stage. Data East and Ocean Software subsequently adapted the arcade game for home computers.
The game was a critical and commercial success. The arcade game was the highest-grossing arcade game of 1988 in Hong Kong, and reached number-two on Japan's monthly Game Machine arcade charts. On home computers, the game sold over 1 million copies worldwide, and it was especially successful in the United Kingdom where it was the best-selling home computer game of the 1980s.
[Gameplay Information: Source - Wikipedia]
The gameplay is similar to Data East's arcade game Bad Dudes Vs. DragonNinja, released earlier the same year.Robocop includes elements from both beat 'em up and run and gun video games.

About the licensing, Ocean Software here in the UK acquired the licence purely based on the script for about $20,000 they developed the home versions of the game and published everywhere except the US/Canada and the Far East where it was published by Data East, Ocean had sub- licenced the rights to Data East for the arcade market with Dara East developing the Arcade game and Pinball machine. This risk was a great financial success for Ocean Software, the game sat in the top 20 sales charts for 1 1/2 to 2 years in the UK hope this insight helps you out, great video as always! 😊

@@kingmonkey25 haha, no worries Ocean tends to be the forgotten party in the Robocop Arcade game, Gary Bracey tells the story better than me 😂, infact it’s in the Robodoc 2nd disk but I think the second disk was only available in the UK/EU, you know it’s been covered tons by UK-centric KZfaqrs anyway (Kim Justice etc) because of the history of Ocean

I never knew this game existed until my adult years, and it unfortunately never clicked with me when I tried it. Felt like a game you really need the nostalgia factor for. But nobody can love everything. Those Data East cabs always interested me, though. They seem to get used by home arcade folks the way Dynamos were used back in old arcades.

I had a Sly Spy that also came originally in the same cabinet, and it was one of my favorite cabinet designs. Not sure if this one is the same way, but when the control panel was unlocked, the PCB could slide out in a tray through the front. Was extremely easy to work on. Unfortunately I sold it in my own hobby-downsizing, but is one I'd love to see come back around.

I LOVE the Robocop arcade!! It's one of my favorite arcade games ever!!! Any time I saw it out in the wild as a kid I would play it & never get too far cause it gets hard FAST. I remember the first time I played it on MAME, I counted all the "quarters" I would have used, and it ended up being around $30 to finally beat the game! LoL My biggest wish (that is never going to happen) besides owning the actual arcade, is for Arcade 1Up to make a Robocop w/ included games of Robocop 2 and Sega's Robocop vs Terminator. Pipe dream I know.

I think if they released Robocop during COVID it would have sold really well, when everyone was buying up every game they made. I question if it would sell well now but that would be cool. I'm a little out of touch with what's going on in the 3/4 space, but it feels like the momentum of 1up as a company is slowing down a lot. Anyhow, thank you so much for watching, I love your story about the amount of money it would have cost you to complete the game!

This is one of my All Time Favorite Movies! I used to love this movie sooo much! I believe it's why I had such a strong Love for Halo when I finally played it, Mind you I was 12 when I played Halo. So I was so much younger when I Experienced Robocop on VHS and On HBO. Yaa man both the ED-209 and Murphy Death scenes were absolutely Fracking INTENSE!! I only somewhat remember my reaction to how Murphy died...Like I can vaguely recall when I first thought the stuff was real, so it was like a Snuff film LOL! Freaking Faces Of Death. Yaa man I was that Young at one point where movies were real and I was watching all the hits! Terminator! Alien! Yaa I grew up with some fear, but I also understand that Magical moment when you become old enough that you grow out of it, and these things become some of the biggest hits in my life. What's funny is that even now I enjoy my favorite films and ask What if that is possible, or just imagination runs wild, or I begin to wonder of potential meanings. So in my later years that Corporate Scene is crazy cuz for me it speaks of Corporate recklessness, like for example all these Real World Scandals of Sexual assault and stuff. Robocop is also a movie about the Privatization of the Police Force, where a Governing Body no Longer Responds to a Nation to Uphold the Laws but to a Corporate Entity, and Transhumanism. Some of the best movies seem to rub shoulders with the world of Sci-Fi Conspiracy or Science Fact... We live in a Crazy world now a days I don't even know how to Label it right 😂😂 But yaa Robocop is a Film I will be watching for my entire Life. I also enjoyed the Reboot... It's pace is faster but it has good moments in it. Like, remember when in the Reboot they first showed him what he looks like upon his Request? They removed everything and you see he is just a Heart, Lungs, Head & Face, and a Left Hand. Like, Could you imagine being in that position?! Freaking Mind Blowing! Mainly because we are marching further and further in to a future where something like that can be possible. So ya. 😂 Robocop. I LOVE IT!

Probably in the early 1990s. I remember as a child at AMES at a ROBOCOP cabinet, but it was probably 3/4 the size of an adult cabinet possibly smaller. I was probably 6 and could play the game like it was the correct size ofor a child. I googled smaller versions of the cabinet, but never came up with anything. Just a little tid bit.

Dang you’re getting old. It’s pixelcade. 😂 Also, I don’t think you collect them; but Quarter Arcades has it in their future plans to have a Robocop down the road.

Sadly I think you're right... I need to do some puzzles or something to get my brain working again. On a side note, I think you're right about Quarter Arcades: that would be awesome, I would buy one!

3:40 Naaaa dude!!! This is how you know I'm a True Robocop Fan! See, Not only do you have the Movie Film on the bezel, but you also have the Orion Branding. Now if you remember the Orion Branding little Clip they use, they are about Space. So that Space Theme has to Absolutely Be a Nod to the Orion Production Studio. On the Time Stamp you see their Branding there... Put it all together and it makes some sense, Right? 😅

Saw this is theaters. CHILDHOOD TRAUMA?!? Sound like you aren't ready for SUPERMAN III and that woman getting turned into a robot. Oof! I made a joke post about it, and everyone that commented said they felt that way as a kid too and can not watch that scene to this day, myself included. It's so creepy.

@@RetroRalph Sorta LOL!! If you do, watch from the beginning and not just the clip. Best thing about the movie is Richard Pryor. Honestly the movie is really bad lol! 4 is worse lol! Btw, been checking out your channel for a bit. I've been an arcade tech since the mid 90s, but been IN arcades since they were black and white 😎 Chuck E, namco, Gameworks(final tech before closing), Great Wolf Lodge, and own a collection of about 25 machines, half inside the house and the rest in the garage.

The most insane part that scarred me as a kid was Clarence Boddicker going "neh neh neh neh neh" and aiming the shotgun at various appendages. Toying with someone like that is colddddddd blooded........damn, Red Foreman. kzfaq.infoUgkxaHYd0aEcf0uFwbC2wKplhD70oerwbASA?si=i-eJgihAzTaYyVwz
