2021 is the year I've decied to dive head first into film photography. I sold my Canon 1DX MK II for The Canon EOS 1N RS 35mm Film Camera. Going from Digital to Film was a lot less scary than I thought it would be. The first three rolls of film I bought were Kodak Portra 400, Fuji Pro 400h, Kodak Ektar 100, and Illford HP5.

👍👍. I too have been using my film cameras again. I have the same camera as you have there and it is currently loaded with black and white film. I’m going out tomorrow morning to get some pictures. Digital photography is okay, but it really lacks thought and film makes me slow down and think about everything.

@IMMORTAL GLORY 天 Well I would say preferring film over ditigal is a matter of personal choice. Some people take pride in the putting in the work, regardless of convenience. And "slapping a filter" on a photo just sounds lazy, imo.
@sidneybakergreen
@sidneybakergreen 3 жыл бұрын
@IMMORTAL GLORY 天 it’s not about it being convenient . It never was about it being convenient. Becoming a photographer and looking for convenience is cognitive dissonance at it’s finest. And you can get close results but film handles different that’s just a fact. We aren’t going to argue about that. You can produce an image that’s similar, but it just doesn’t have that organic feel and that’s been shown over and over again. If you’re all about convenience that’s fine, but don’t try to bring down the level of film because something doesn’t fit your workflow and so you tell yourself these things to make yourself feel better man. And this coming from a place of experience. my editorial style in my line of professional photo work over the last 6 years emulated Fuji Pro 400. The real film handles way differently than any Lightroom emulation out there. Furthermore, you can tell the difference between those shooting weddings on Pro 400H and those who use Pro 400 H presets. If the look was so easy to achieve there wouldn’t be such a difference in all the professional Pro 400H emulations MADE BY FILM LABS lol

@IMMORTAL GLORY 天 Okay, I misread the tone. Especially on a comment that my mom made I’m a little more defensive when I reply. That’s my A1. And I can understand that. The only development I outsource is weddings and that can take a while. Digital has its place and so does film.

Interesting video and thx for sharing your thoughts! Your images from the city did not resonate with me but your portraits are great. I am wondering what you would do with a medium format camera and a portrait lens, e.g. a Hasselblad 500CM with a 120mm or 150mm lens.

I just started my film photography "awakening" and I realized how I'm missing a lot on the foundation skills of exposure, etc. Admittedly, digital photography has helped me hone my understanding on composition and looking forward to using those with film photography. I was looking for videos on Canon EOS 1N (which I recently got). Best of luck to your journey with film photography!

Welcome to every shot counts. I see many suggestions for trying medium format, at some point borrow or rent a 4X5 technical or field camera. That will give you some fun too. I started in film, still and movie, about sixty years ago. Digital is nice, but let me puzzle over reciprocity and bellow extension calculations. Plus some things just feel good with film in hand.

I've been learning film and digital photography off and on for a long time and lately I've read that people are getting into film for it's color and superior dynamic range that only film can offer. Though film is quite expensive right now but I think the price will decrease when film manufacturers get back into mass productions of film for the consumer market in the near future. In the meantime since you're getting into film photography for your business, it would be good to look into professional grade film cameras for all types of photography that you'll be doing or will be exploring in your film photography journey.

Wow! I had a very similar experience. Got into wildlife, upgraded my gear to the latest and greatest... Don't get me wrong, I love this gear dearly. I can get shots never thought possible with older gear. But... I just couldn't get THAT feeling anymore, the feeling I had shooting my first 35mm cameras back when I was a child/teenager. That sheer joy of banning stuff on an actual medium. Wish you a lot of fun with your 35! :)

Nice video, I've been looking at the Canon eos 1n rs also. One question for you , do you find that the viewfinder is a little darker because of the pelican mirror or do you barely notice the difference? I currently have a nikon f 3 hp with the md 4 motor. All of my digital gear is canon so I wart to get a eos film camera so I can used my current canon lenses.

Yes film photography has been catching my eye. I started with film photography in high school back in 1965 using a twin lens reflex camera. I was one of the main school photographers and loved the medium. I owned a Minolta SRT-101 camera from 1975-2000 and took all my photos using this camera. I also used a Rolleicord TLR and love the medium format. The SRT had a shutter problem and I got rid of it and starting using digital (low res cameras in 2000). Fast forward and up until now I have upgraded to Canon 5-D Mark 4, Sony and have a lot of EF glass and filters. Like you something was missing. The automatic exposure/ iPhone feel of digital made me feel something was missing. Everything was too fast and I came home with hundreds of photos and found a couple I liked. I watch a few youtube videos by some film photographers and had a lightbulb moment. Have a look at Nick Carver's channel and some other analog sites and they had the same feeling something was missing. Art, composition, slowing down. I bought a Minolta SRT-101 this week and a couple of lenses for a couple hundred dollars. I also have some medium format cameras as I love the larger negative size. I also have access to a real darkroom (community owned). So it's back to the future. I will keep my digital gear and this way I can choose the right camera, right lens for the image I want to capture. I have subscribed to see how you are getting on.

The canon Eos 1n RS was a specialist camera for people who needed 10 frames per second. It has a tiny tiny tendency to underexpose due to the fact the mirror doesn't move, also because it doesn't move it is a barrier from the lens to the film so the final image is not as sharp as it would be. Good video by the way.

I went back to film (35mm) using Canon's EOS cameras and EF lenses do to the high cost of going to a DSLR full frame camera. All used equipment from Ebay of course in excellent to mint condition at a very low cost. In the last 2 years I've accumulated 8 Canon EOS camera bodies and 7 EF lenses. The most expensive camera body was the EOS 1 in excellent to mint condition w/PB-E1 Power Booster at $150 out the door from ebay. The most expensive EF lens (micro) was 141.04 GBP out the door. All 7 of my EF lenses will work with their DSLR bodies and the RF bodies with their smart adapter. But for right now I'm staying with film. My experience with Canon goes back to the days when I was living in Japan from 1969 - 1972 as a "military brat" staring out using a Canon FTb with their FL/FD lenses then going on to the F1/F1n & A1 with their FD/FDn lenses. I never purchased any of their T series cameras while holding off on their EOS series for a number of reasons.

when I started photography there was no digital. I shot on medium format a Mamiya 6x7, I even had a 5x4 and 10x8 large format. Film is beautiful but I could never go back to it. Digital is just too good now. Fast turn around and flexibility. You can make it look like what ever you want to. Developing the negatives and then the darkroom or scanning is just too much work. if you shoot B/W developing the negatives defines the look you get. so much work.

@@sidneybakergreen I watched another one of your vids where you mentioned you went with 35mm over 120 because you already have the lenses. In my opinion the only lenses you'll need for 645 format are the 55 2.8 and the 80 2.8. You don't even need the latest Mamiya 645 afd iii. I have the original 645 af that came out in 1999 and it works perfectly. Dslr controls, auto focus, auto wind, data imprinting on the film, 1/4000 shutter, it's a dream man. Phase One bought Mamiya back in the day, that's why their cameras look so similar.

Shooting film forces a photographer to take their time to practice the basics of photography; light, shadows, composition, shutter speed, aperture, ISO and flash. Once a person learns the basics and sticks with it they will likely spend more time taking photos and less time in front of a computer with software to correct what they could have done at the time they took the photo. Photoshop, Lightroom, Painshop Pro are tools. They are not a substitute for talent. Why would anyone shoot 500 - 600 or more digital images then spend days and weeks in front of a computer making corrections. This kind of photography has devolved the photographer into a person taking snap shots with thousands of dollars worth of equipment when he could spend $400 on a Canon Power Shot and get the same effect. Take time to learn your craft with film. I currently shoot with a Canon EOS 1 and 1V as well as Nikon FM2. The FM2 is an all mechanical camera.

That's a really deep thought. Quite the point most people don't understand. It's so easy nowadays with anyone being able to pick up a DSLR or something similar and call themselves photographers, mostly in auto mode with again the camera doing the heavy lifting. Quoting the over used slogan - Everyone is a photographer until the manual mode comes on. And the kind of pictures shot are almost always edited heavily and presented as good pictures, canceling the point of good photography in the first place. Analog photography I believe, gives you that correct perspective on your capabilities.

You will be disappointed unless you just brainwash yourself that 35mm film results must be cool. At the very least switching to MF film, 66 or 67 aspect ratio, versus 35mm film , provides the advantages of enlargement capability and aspect ratio. IQ potential of optimally produced MF and large format film versus the best current sensor results is more about personal taste and an acceptable time frame/ price point - but as always in photography it ultimately comes down to whether or not the content holds up. As is represented on so many current KZfaq videos, many folks are simply out to shoot for something to do or for the social possibilities or as an activity. For some , the kit and and/or the medium is interchangeable and others keep swapping out gear thinking that will change the outcome when the kit is not the issue. Nothing wrong with folks out for laughs - but is makes critique , commentary or advice rather pointless. Wonky framing , constant over exposure or one more rotting wooden gate in the viewfinder matters little when the goal is to get out of the house for a stretch and a bit of fresh air. For me that's what the gym is for- the camera stays home.
