In this video, I experiment with shooting film. The insane popularity of film photography these days has made me feel like I NEED to shoot film, but is it really worth it? Let's find out.
I also chat a bit about the awesome Canon EOS 1V.
Please ask me any questions or say hello in the comments, and BE NICE!
Thank you for watching :)

I think film and old age are two things that will never go away. I shot a roll yesterday with a Nikon F prism finder without a meter and a 35mm nikkor. most shots were Sunny 16. I also used a phone light meter app. Maybe you become a Thoreau with a film camera. It's like having a pencil and drawing pad for me.

I bought an EOS 1V literally yesterday, (the power switch on my 1N broke), so I've been checking out videos on the 1V. I shoot primarily live punk bands in black & white and I'd been away from it for about 15 years. As I've been getting back into it I've noticed 99% of photographers at shows are digital only, and most of them are more or less taking frames from videos rather than taking photos. I see some great images from those people, but I can always tell it's digital when they convert it to black & white. I know this sounds like "old man yells at could", but taking 600 images of a 30 minute live set takes all the skill of shooting the actual photos out of it. There is for sure skill in digital but it's more about using photo programs rather than taking good photographs.

The 1N has a great attractive price point on Ebay but I'm inclined always to get the best of the best. Any thoughts on the 1V vs. the 1N? Thanks
@forgerelli1
@forgerelli1 2 ай бұрын
@@jomoanderson5596 The 1V is a better camera, but I'm not sure is it's worth the extra cost (4 or 5 times as much). I know exactly what you mean about going for the best camera, but if the 1V didn't exist I'd be perfectly happy with my 1N. If you're new to film I would start with the 1N. Get a cheap one from a reputable seller.

thank you for this great experience, for my part I have chosen to sell all my digital cameras and to return to my film roots with my EOS 1V where I develop my own black & white films and papers - this feeling remains unique and more authentic in what concerns me and this case fully meets my expectations. Zach, I found your channel from your Leica Q2 video but I subbed right away. Your videos are so relaxing to watch, the storyline is incredible easy to follow and flows well. Your voice is relaxing and not over-hyped. And you're clearly an extremely talented, well-rounded photographer (and film maker!). Keep up the great work, you deserve a million subs and more.

Great vid Zack old AE-1 was my first camera back in highschool when I joined the photo club, developed film in dark room and all the good stuff. Fell in love with the art and Canon and haven't looked back. Thank you for your time and passion. Great video. This is probably the next step for me. I don't need a film camera, but I am curious. I have not shot film for decades, but have a pile of EF lenses, and just love the look of the EOS 1n or v. I'll probably do it just as an exercise to see if I like it or not.

Great idea, I think. As a teenager I experimented a lot with film, but since I started with digital some years ago, I always photographed with my 5diii and R, and since some months I also have the desire to try out my ef-lenses with a film camera... Anyway... Thanks for the always great videos. Always enjoy to watch them.

I absolutely love shooting Colour Reversal film and the experience of viewing those slides on a light table is an experience that exceeds digital for me personally. Much of my personal photos are taken with Ektachrome E100 and some Velvia 50 As for the chemicals, I use a pro lab that abides by all Canadian laws around these chemicals and I would also point out that the proliferation of electronic waste made by digital cameras is often overlooked especially with the need to upgrade your camera to get new imaging technology.

Hello Zach, Happy Thanksgiving. Well, I understand your feelings about film, "Analog", photography. The process of photography can be , at times, overwhelming. Be it analog or digital. Back in the day as an old timer would say, such as myself.Many a photographer in the seventies and eighties would buy a dozen rolls of their preferred film stock, in my case 35mm by 36 exposures, shot with a group of like minded people at an event or walk around, get home and maybe that night or the following day process the exposed film. Then fire up the enlarger after the film has dried and proceed to make some photos. Cropping, dodging, burning in an effort to bring out the magic of our photography pursuit wondering all the while , will it turn out the way I hoped. Many a time I would have my film developed by a photo lab. This was always the case when shooting Kodachrome. Back then I was using Nikon. Today I'm using Canon EOS digital 5D lV. I enjoy the "instant gratification" that digital affords me along with the abundant exposures that can be had. With digital the process is similar only we use a computer as our developer, lightroom and photoshop as our chemicals and enlarger and an inkjet printer for the photo. It was a lot of fun back then pursuing that obsession. Today the turn around is a lot quicker. I've given some thought about getting a 1V as i have a lot of EF and L glass that I could use but I'd be using a Lab to do the photos. Wishing you many years of enjoyment in your pursuit of photography Magic.

Thankx for sharing your experience and thoughts on this topic. Last week, I started scanning some old negatives by placing them on a Kaiser slimline plano and shooting them with my EOS R with the 100mm macro. That way I get close enough for the film to cover nearly the whole 30MP sensor. Actually I get so close that I can manual focus on the grain of the film at 10x magnificaiton ;-) .... I put the negatives flat on the Kaiser and place some Canon Batterypacks around the edges to make sure the film is flat on the surface. The Kaiser is not soo bright, so when using F5.6 one has to go to 1/3 secs at 100 ISO. Once I am in focus I wait at 10x magnification in Canon utility (tethered) until the camera does'nt shake anymore (which can take some seconds ! ) .... I lifted the mouse off the table to not cause shake while clicking and then I click the remote shutterbutton in Canon utility. I use the "negative lab pro" plugin in lightroom to convert the negatives and Topaz Denoise AI if some noise reduction is needed . I am really pleased with the results, the sharpness and the colors and the whole process is much faster than using a scanner.... the scanned version looks actually much better than the printed photo from back in the day ... it made me realize as well that my old Canon AE-1 was actually better as I always thought. Because I enjoyed the result so much, I now bought a Canon EOS 3 so I can use my EF glas to shoot film again now and then ;-) ....

I started my career teaching people how to shoot film but I haven't shot it regularly for work in 7-8 years. The reason I love film has nothing to do with how slow film is, it's about colour. The film stock forces you to think about light and how the film will react to it. That's the reason I think film is valuable. Not nostalgia, it's colour legacy. It's about accepting the limitations of the scene in front of you and what that film can capture. I feel like learning a film stock will improve every photographer out there. Grab a roll of Portra 400 or 160 and learn that film inside out. It will help ground your eye and improve your digital edits.

I have several film cameras as well as digital bodies. I prefer film for portraits and landscapes and use my digital for amateur sports and faster action. Both have a place for me in my work flow. I must admit though as a long time film shooter there is something magical about seeing large slide films on a light table. Pretty tough to top that.

Tbh, I shot film for over 20 years and, it’s really nothing special these days. Great films are commonly discontinued and, honestly, developing chemicals are terrible for the environment, so it’s not a long term sustainable practice. That being said. I have a few point and shoots that I love carrying from time to time, and an Elan 7 that I carry to shoots alongside my digital. I still enjoy it, but I find myself shooting less and less film. The “film is real” bros kinda kill it for me too…

At the risk of boring everyone… I started shooting in the late 70s (of course film) and piled up a boat load of darkroom hours. Wage war against digital until my wife gave me a DSLR one Christmas. Being somewhat (not totally) excessive compulsive, I tore into digital and learn Photoshop (still learning that is…). What is the point here? While I still poke at film from time to time, when I do, I have it processed and digitized so I can improve images in post using Photoshop. QUESTION, am I the only photog doing this?

Love the new cameras now the Canon mirrorless, did shoot also with the Sony a7riii but prefer the canon ones now! I don't know why people still shoot film, yes for fun I understand but not professional. Also I don't like the photos that people now these days make when it must look like the seventies, because they want to imitate those photographers in that time. You can learn from the style but your a reflection of this time we use mobile phones not old ones with a cable. I mean with digital photography there is more possibilities and I love to create this time not imitate other times.

For me shooting film is pretty much a tool that adds a new way to to express myself creatively. With my digital camera I can almost shoot at any f-stop in any lighning condition at any shutter speed and ISO, but with my film camera I'm much more limited. At first I thought that this limitation would restrict me more then I would like, but I found the exact oposite. The restriction to an specific ISO (-range), the limit to a maximum shutter speed of 1/1000s amd the handwork feeling, really adds to the creative process in a way I really enjoy. But I still Love my digital camera and wont give it up for film, but film has it's usecases and can do some things digital can't or is nos as convenient to achieve.

All I would ask for is a decent quality lens, a digital camera, an iPad pro, and a good online printer!
