I created a device that allows you to scan each of your records with embedded RFID tags so that the same album starts playing on spottily, thus counting towards your Spotify & Stats.fm minutes.

This is really cool. Make sure to take a look at NFC tags. Almost every phone can scan an NFC tag, and you can program an NFC tags with a URL. That way, there is no need for a web interface or physical item. Simply just input the Album's URL into each NFC tag, and then scan it on your phone when you want to play the album. Non-the-less awesome project man.

I'm pretty sure vinyl is lossy, not as much as spotify's, mind, but it is. if you want lossless you want CD or FLACs. Cool idea though

i think they are lossy, but have a higher threshold of data possible, due to them being analog. they are not specifically bound to Digital limitations, like samplerate or bitdepth, at least when it comes to playing them back. using digital files as source that are on the same limit may diminish that (for example 16bit, 48000Hz)

@@ariankrau1287 I think it's more the fact that there are so many more factors with analog audio that can degrade the quality. A perfect print could probably sound way better, but it has to go through so many layers to get to the audio you hear, and then you've got to count for any potential wear and tear at all of those intervals.

This is super cool! I'm now thinking of other possibilities with this. For example, would it be possible to get more granular stats/controls? If you could find the position of the tone arm, you could theoretically tell exactly which song you were listening to (would need to account for 2 sides as well as multi-disk albums). That way you could track exactly which songs you listened to if you don't listen to the whole album.

I was also thinking about a way to do something like that, I think a simple solution would be to make a new device, instead of using a RFID scanner you use a microphone. Then when I activate it, it makes a call to the Shazam api every minute or two.

Really cool video, i liked the illustration for explain rfid, although the beginning felt a little essay like and then the wait was kinda awkward, but its really great

Interesting concept using the rfid tags, and then tying that to the spotify api. Did you float using the rfid tags for a spreadsheet and keeping that stored locally?
@RaphBialy

Right now I’m using a JSON file to store the data. What’s good with that is since I never need to see which tag belongs to which album once it’s defined, using JSON makes it easier to implement.

This is cool, although the whole time I was wondering if you could've done something that listens to the music playing and sends it to Shazam (or a similar service) and then starts playing it on Spotify. I suppose one downside is that it will also detect songs played through Spotify (not just vinyl), so you'd need to turn it off
@RaphBialy
@RaphBialy Ай бұрын
I was actually thinking of doing that too. To solve the problem of also scanning Spotify I would add a button that makes it start scanning for an hour, about the length of an album

Honestly, I'm surprised that a roughly Gameboy cartridge sized, ROM based digital media format never surfaced. Like, I get that CD is lossless, but CDs scratch, and cheap ones decay within a decade. These days, even relatively cheap NAND Flash can be rated with cold data retention of 10 years. A digital data card is just more durable than a plastic disk.

But vinyl is not lossless if I understand it correctly? It's imperfect compared to digital recordings.
@RaphBialy

You’re half right, it is lossless but that doesn’t mean that it sounds better than digital. These days digital audio will sound more pure than vinyl. But the real reason I use vinyl is because it’s more fun ;)
