I Started Homesteading With No Money / Start The Homesteaders Lifestyle / Seasons Late Spring
I was recently asked 'How do you start homesteading?'
I think you can start the homesteading lifestyle where ever you are, you can start learning skills and doing what you learn so you can really know how to do all the things you are learning about.
My journey in to the homesteading lifestyle started back in 1994, when I found myself living on an isolated sheep farm in the Strathbogie Ranges with little money.
It was initially a matter of survival and then as my knowledge, skill set and ability grew, I and by then my family thrived.
Homesteading was not a term know to me back then, in fact I wouldn’t hear it described to my way of life for 20 years into my homesteading adventures.
There was no internet inspiration back then, no examples of this life choice; we didn’t even have radio reception, a TV or a telephone.
My family, friends, active social life, work mates and team mates were hours away and were now living a very different life to me now and my good salary and financial independence had decreased dramatically.... it was almost as if I had gone back in time....
Hunting the abundance of rabbits plaguing the property was a nightly job, to feed the dogs.
Cutting, splitting wood and keeping the fire/s burning was vital.
Compost was started; I have always thought them very sensible ways of managing waste, even in the 70’s as a kid and I discovered that they also make a wonderful medium for growing everything I wanted to grow.
I was gifted a Rooster and shortly after 2 hens, the beginning of my free range chicken obsession which is now only a small flock suitable for the size of Moat Cottage.
Due to distance and financial restrictions going to town for food, which was the only shopping done for years, happened once a fortnight, so a vegetable garden was started. That’s right, no op shopping, visits to target, the plant nursery, Bunning’s (it didn’t exist yet) or obviously internet shopping. It is amazing what you can live without.
Initially I wasn't preserving food, as we needed what was growing and being hunted, so were using it up as we went, we were living completely seasonal, but as I got more experienced and had more success in the garden this became a beneficial method to ensure a more varied diet for the whole year.
I started growing medicinal herbs, sowed my own curtains from calico, a birthday present from my parents and I hung them on sunflower stems grown from my first season in the vegetable garden.....and my homesteading life was now how I wanted to live by choice and not so much about just surviving and what I could do continued to expand.
Now days most people interested in this way of life have inspiration, a road map of what can be done and many mentors teaching the skills online for free.
It is not always easy, there will be successes, failures, challengers, new life, death and plenty of work involved but I guarantee you it will be an adventure and a life well lived and there are many ways to live this lifestyle.....
Happy homesteading friends.

Welcome to Moat Cottage Homesteading, I'm Elissa and here at Moat Cottage, we raise and grow and process some of our own free range meat, organic vegetables and fruit. We grow all of our herbs for both eating and medicinal purposes as well as hunt, fish and forage.
Our goal each season is to preserve our produce for the year ahead by canning, dehydrating, fermenting and freezing and we work on being prepared for emergency situations.
Avoiding single use plastic, chemicals and artificial fragrances is important to us and we are trying to live an older style life, balanced with this modern world.

we started out by starting a veggie garden on our apartment balcony! had a lot of its own challenges, but gave us a good leg up before we got out on the property! at 30 I became a carpenter apprentice, and that trade has given me a lot of good transferable skills!

It’s so nice to see you here. Congratulations on your apprenticeship, I know you’ll do well. I use my trade skills everyday and it gives you the extra confidence to try anything….. nothing is difficult, it’s just learning the trick of the trade, in whatever skill it is your putting your attention to.

Very nice and informative video. Too many people think that homesteading means buying a huge parcel of land first, and then learning how to do things. We can all start building our knowledge level now, wherever we are. I originally thought I needed 40 acres for a homestead, and now I realize 3-5 acres would be perfect for me. Perhaps even 2 acres if I am close to an area where there are farmers and ranchers. Thank you for this video. Blessings.

I was raised with parents that loved the grass roots lifestyle. Back then , we called it hobby farming but I'm glad that today it's accepted in Australia to call it homesteading because I continue that lifestyle with my family and it's far more than a hobby. It's a way of life. I love the tips about building up a skill set. 👌. My tiny 1m high mandarin tree us absolutely covered in pea sized fruit at the moment, I will thin it tomorrow as I was thinking that there's no way it can support that many fruit too. I planted it 2 years ago but really hasn't grown much. Just a few fruit will encourage it to use the energy to keep growing as well. I wonder if the flowers can be used for anything? Thank you for a beautiful, informative video lovely 😍

Hello Countrymouse, you are so right, it’s a mindset, a lifestyle and a way of life! Citrus blossom can be made into tea but are not so great eaten raw because they are a soapy bitter flavour, which is a shame because they smell so wonderful and would look beautiful dipped in chocolate…

I love watching your channel, you have such calming way about yourself 😊. May I ask what size property you are on and do you do this on your own? I am like yourself and have fibromyalgia amongst several other health issues and wonder how you manage to do all you do? I am in Brisbane but would love to move country on more land but am worried that in our 50's we may not be able to maintain to much land. I do 'Homestead' so to speak as much as I can on our 1/4 acre.
@MoatCottage
@MoatCottage Жыл бұрын
Hi Tracey, my house is on a 1/6 acre block, on the edge of a small country town. I obviously have to rest a lot due to my Cfs & fibro, so homesteading is basically the all I can do these days….I rarely leave because being social has consequences, as you know and I am the only homesteader at Moat Cottage which is why living on a smaller plot helps. There is less fencing and general maintenance.

That sorrel is huge, great video Elissa, I'm curious what car did you have? It you don't mind me asking when did you behind unwell was it due to something specific? How are you dealing with all the rain, our garlic had rotted unfortunately. Stay well love Kirsten xx
@MoatCottage
@MoatCottage Жыл бұрын
Hi Kristen, im sorry your garlic was a casualty of the wet seasons… my sorrel is 12 months old or slightly older and is trying to go to seed now, so it’s almost at its end. I had a HJ Kingswood Holden, a HZ Kingswood and then a HZ Statesman before finally driving something more economical and environmentally friendly. It dried out here finally ☀️ and all the muddy areas became as hard as a rock, but it’s raining again today, which we actually needed so it’s all going well, Thanks

@@MoatCottage ooh love the old Holden's they don't build them like that any more, I have a small garden bed with loads of comfrey and was harvesting some to make salve and guess what I found, yep more garlic I forgot I planted some there and it was not rotten it was a great surprise, we've just had over 40mls of rain today, managed to do three hours of weeding the other day and are getting two metres of rough bark to put on our beds hopefully that will suppress the weeds for a while, stay safe lovely xx
