So many memes for this film run rampant that I mainly just sit back and observe others' trains of thought. Animal Planet was fun. They had cat videos before the internet did. Rafiki is a mandrill, but he calls himself a baboon since most people (including the Disney animators?) can't tell the difference. Disney was having a hard time marketing the film before it opened ... either that or they didn't care, most of the attention by executives was on Pocahontas ... so they started by taking the opening Circle of Life number and using it as a trailer. IT WORKED. Scar is the 3rd villain in a row animated by Andreas Deja. After a while you can spot big design similarities between him, Gaston and Jafar. Scar's voice actor (Jeremy Irons) hit too high a note during "Be Prepared" and had to recover his vocal cords, which meant the end of the song had to be recorded by Ed the Hyena's voice actor (Jim Cummings) doing a Jeremy Irons imitation. A couple of factors in the death scene: The writers decided that, unlike Bambi where the viewer's imagination can fill in the blanks, Simba seeing the body would make more sense. They took a lot of storytelling cues from Hamlet, the crux of which is Claudius murdering Hamlet's father and Hamlet going down a path of revenge, but they mixed this with a theme of facing responsibility which (to contrast him with Scar as much as possible) meant having Scar shifting the blame onto his nephew at ground zero of the trauma. Timon and Pumbaa are based on two minor characters from Hamlet: his university roommates Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. The discovery of Tom Stoppard's play about those two characters and their unseen context gave Disney an indirect excuse to do Lion King 1-and-a-half. "We're gonna fight your uncle for THIS?" is my favorite line. 13:15 Scar becomes a cloak ... it's three films down the road in Disney's canon, used as a throwaway joke. You had me confused for a minute when you said "he's like a carpet in another one".

I cried really hard when I was a kid watching mufasa die, it hurt knowing that scar was to blame and Simba blamed himself for so long. I still cry when Mufasa dies
