Disney used to base the characters or at least take heavy inspiration from their original VA's back in the day, they would even have the VA's do certain stuff to give real life references for the animators back in the day, as you can see with Kathryn Beaumont doing the movements for Alice. Back then, you could say the Disney characters were real, because essentially they were!

Up until 1960 every scene was filmed out by principal cast members for references. This ended when the “Xerox era” began due to the financial failure of Sleeping Beauty and major budget cuts were made to the animation department. Instead, the animators shot reference films of themselves using hand held 16mm or 8mm film as needed. When The Little Mermaid was made, they brought back reference footage with Jodie Benson doing a lot of scene recreations.
@_veronica_r
@_veronica_r Жыл бұрын
It's not just for reference! They actually traced over the live action version frame by frame for a lot of movies! It was a very common practice back then called rotoscoping. A very fascinating and underappreciated lost art!
@ColdWarShot
@ColdWarShot Жыл бұрын
@@_veronica_r The only film that used rotoscoping was Snow White. Disney hated rotoscoping and refused to allow his animators to do it. The films were not for rotoscoping use. Marc Davis explained it as cheating. He, Frank, Ollie, and Mitt have all discussed the issue of Rotoscoping and most had a distinct distain for the technique often citing the Max Fleischer cartoons’ heavy use of it.
@ColdWarShot
@ColdWarShot Жыл бұрын
@@_veronica_r Also, one only has to watch the B rolls from the animation department to see that they weren’t rotoscoping. The Animator leads would pump out the rough sketches of their characters for every scene. They would hand these off to the tasked animation who would then trace these onto the cells. Once reviewed and approved, they would be “inked” with indelible ink and sent off to be colored.

I'm a Voice Actor and Audio Engineer. It's absolutely baffling to me how in some scenes, you can see the orchestra performing for soundtrack as the actors roll on top of it live: nowadays, the music is either added in afterwards, or already there. The timing that is required to perform that perfectly every time is astounding: no wonder classic Disney films always captured our hearts since the beginning!

That was her entire career. It was basically the only thing she could be from then on.

they dont do it all the time but there have been stories of Mark Hamill as the joker, and video recordings of his performance being used as inspiration for the animation, since he is a very physical performer even if he is just doing voices.

With how Disney used VA's for real life references as well for animation, the older movies had so much life put into them due to it. Eleanor Audley was basically the real life Lady Tremaine/Maleficent, Kathryn Beaumont as the real life Alice, etc. This is essentially lost when they went 3D animation sadly.
