People tend to forget or not mention how much power consumption most gaming desktop towers take up. From 150 to 654 watts. In regions with high electric bills, that is huge! Mini-PCs take up 20 to 65 watts.

I stoppe paying games when they became obsessively online back in 2010. Now that games have no end (DLCs) I am even less inclined to play them. That's why I only play on retro handhends where games are not online an have a beginning and an end.

Would definitely like to see your homelab setup! Refreshing video about a pragmatic use case. So many videos I see with people that say that they need the max and the ultra. This doesn’t make sense to me since most jobs will give job a powerful enough model. The air is fine. Only thing that I’ve grown to appreciate is a bigger screen like in the 15”.

i appreciate you giving a take like this especially as a tech youtuber as its pretty rare in the space, the air is super versatile and you really only need the pro if you have a definite use case for it. im also one of the people that thinks 8gb of ram is still fine in base macbook models for most people
@DayoAworunse

The Pro models these days are nothing like the Pro models from the earlier era. Unless you job depends on speed of how fast you churn stuff out locally, the Air models (even the newer m3) are more then capable. 8gb is still criminal tho but I agree it’s okay for everyday users

I have a study abroad semester in Germany this upcoming Fall, and since my Dell XPS 15 give me various technical issues last semester, I decided to treat myself and get a MacBook for the remainder of my degree. The issue I have is that I over-analyze everything, especially when it comes to the money I'm going to spend. I kid you not, I have spent the last few weeks trying to decide if I want a Pro or an Air, and I have seen every single KZfaq video under the sun regarding this topic. It wasn't until I watched this video that I finally felt the peace and clarity I needed to come to a decision. I've decided the MacBook Air will more than certainly suit my needs and is enough for what I'll need the next few semesters, even though the speakers do worry me. Still, thank you Dayo for your piece, you've earned yourself one more subscriber!

I used to be an Apple hater and never understood why people would spend money on it over windows laptops. Then I got a 2012 model and while it wasn’t blazing fast, everything just worked and paying for reliability, having these tied to your existing devices, it made life much easier. Pros are overkill these days but they still have their place.

I remember saying this in your stream chat a few months ago and I think my opinion is becoming a lot more widespread. The M1 macbook air is quite possibly one of the greatest devices to come out in the past 20 years due to how well-built, cost effective, and efficient it is. Being such a powerful device and not having a fan, which is a likely point of failure, helps to mitigate the poor repairability of the laptop, though it doesn't excuse it. Mind you, it's certainly not flawless, spec'ing it to have higher storage or memory like all Apple devices is a huge pain and the repairability isn't great. However, at the price point, there's still no windows laptops that can compete with it in every single front simultaneously.(though there are certainly windows options that outdo the M1 air in one or two areas like power or build quality or battery life, but none beat the M1 Air in every single category at once.)

Excellent outro! Slick! I was looking at a Mac mini, but when Apple Silicon was first announced I fell in love with the M1 MacBook Air that was introduced at the same time. I'm convinced this is the pinnacle of MacBook Air design. This is everything the 2014 MacBook wanted to be but it was saddled with that pathetic intel Core-M CPU. The newer MacBook Airs don't even LOOK like MacBook Airs. I bought my M1 MacBook Air eight months ago with double the RAM and double the storage as future proofing and it's what I'm used to on my old MacBook Pro, the last one with an internal optical drive and ALL the ports. The reviews for the base level M1 MacBook Air generally agreed that it was all anyone would need for at least 90% of Mac users. My sister is a teacher and she's utterly delighted with hers. Luke Miani recently talked about the 16" MacBook Pro, one of the last with and intel chip, that is an amazing laptop but is now selling for about the same as the base M1 MacBook Air. I'm not not sure I didn't overpay for my M1 MacBook Air because I'm not certain I'll ever really use the extra Ram and storage. The speakers on this Mac are surprisingly good.

The system data issue for storage was a problem I had on my M1 MacBook Pro, especially since I used it for all my video editing over the past few years. I was able to clear up most of it after deleting what was essentially a bunch of Premiere Pro backup files living back in cache folders. If there's apps that auto-backup, you can check those folders and delete them to free up a bunch of space.

Bought the M1 Air 16gb RAM last year and it's been nothing short of magical. I will have to upgrade within the next 12 months to a Pro/Mac Mini, because I heat this badboy up way too much when coloring/video editing, but it gets the job done everytime. I'm trying my best to take good care of it, as I want it to remain my travel laptop for the years to come. Paired up with 11" M4 iPad Pro, it's mind boggling how much power/battery life/POSSIBILITES I have in my backpack, weighting in at less than 2kg. I genuinely prefer the design of the M1 Air over the newer ones, it's sleek. If only the bezels were smaller. The keyboard is my favourite keyboard in the world. In a year or so, when my battery health is nearing 80%, I plan to replace the battery, maybe along with a keyboard replacement too, if it makes sense. At that point, most of my work is going to be happening on a different device, so the M1 Air will only be used for light work. I can see myself still using it in 4 years, regularly. What a purchase.

I am contemplating this machine for my Master's degree study. I multitask and keep tons of tabs open during my research, other than that I only use my laptop for watching YT videos and series. I do not game, edit or do anything of that sort. As a student this would be huge investment and my first MacBook coming from years of using Windows, thus I am thinking of purchasing a new, 16gb model for 1000€. As such I am expecting this machine to last me 4 years minimum. Would any of you recommend this to me? M2 and above are out of my budget.

Great video! People don’t seem to realize how good Apple’s entry level products are. Case in point: M1 MacBook Air. I, too, have the same MacBook and I couldn’t have asked for a better laptop. For my personal use case, I don’t need a MacBook Pro. However. Apple makes it tempting to jump to their Pro-level devices because of features like ProMotion, miniLED display, etc. But those features are only niceties in my opinion. Does having a 120Hz refresh rate REALLY impact your life; your day-to-day operations as a casual user? No, I don’t believe so. The majority of the general population can get on with a MacBook Air and dare I say, a base model with 8GB of RAM!

A couple of questions and a my story. Is you M1 Mac the base version with 256 GB storage and 8 GB memory? Second, do you run any programming tools, IDEs, etc. I have an M1 8/256 Air and it is starts slowing when I run more than 2-3 applications. Nothing major, just an IDE, mail, etc. I upgraded to a 14" MBP M2 Pro (16G, 1 TB, much better screen) and am happy with it, but really miss the light and Air form factor. I would love to be able to replace the MBP with an Air.
