Wheels can be a very personal thing and as skaters progress through their skating journey their preferences will change but this guide will hopefully help those starting out. to choose the correct wheel for each surface. @@Skatielol so the reason I could never do a spin is my wheels? And the drawback with harder wheels is that they are really fast so you have to be able to control them quite a bit? Not to sound silly but is this why rhythm skaters can do so many moves effortlessly?

I've been skating indoors on 78A 61mm and I thought my inability to spin and turn smoothly was all on me ㅠㅠ this was so helpful and I've just ordered 89As and am hopeful I'll be able to skate smoother!

Thank you xx. To be honest most of my wheels I just use for ever. I do occasionally replace them if they get a flat or start to round off but I move them around a lot to try and stop uneven wear.

This was very informative, thanks! I'm still at the tennis court stage so the couple times I tried parking lots, I was shocked by how bumpy it was! Only now learning about wheel numbers and was actually disappointed to find my wheels are already 78a! I guess the bumpiness is just another thing to get used to!

Yeah, those outside surfaces can be very unforgiving even with nice soft, big wheels. Often car parks can be quite rough as they have stones in the surface for strength. I’ve found cycle paths tend to be nice and smooth.

Get rid of your default manufacturer supplied wheels asap! It makes such a huge difference. After watching this video I bought the Rolline Helium and the Rolline Ice in 90A both in 64mm and boy oh boy, do these make a difference. The Heliums are fast. like real fast. And sticky. They stick to our stone floors, no slipping. The Ice 90A: so effortless. Don't get me wrong: they are not easy. The slightest pressure in your Bubbles will make you shoot forwards (or any other random direction if you are not careful) like a rocket. Having problems with finding your edges? Oh, the 90A will show you where they are 😎 Problems with turning or spinning? On these wheels you will spin for days! It will take me a few days to get used to the new wheels, but I wish, I had them earlier on. Thank you for explaining the different types of wheels. This guide helped very much with choosing the wheels!

I like what is shown in the video, I have found out by myself, but this is nice confirmation, also for somebody can feel difference in balance by height change when bigger wheels, but comfortable ride outside is a thing. I skated outside for first time on 85A/62mm then on 78A/65mm what a difference. Who cares at this point about speed? i don't, Actually I like to go slower by default - when it is downhill, and I don't care about little extra push elsewhere because of that. Thank you ;-)

Love that skating is on your bucket list. Lots of skaters use a T or Y tool. These are ok. If you have skates with the toe stop that is held on with a nut sometimes you’ll need to use a regular spanner / wrench to get enough torque to secure it. amzn.to/3Nbahs1

I skate inline. Just got a new pair (cough for the light up wheels), and the 82A 80mm wheels are perfect. Soft enough to grip but hard enough to…move. I’ve been skating around 76mm (considering wear) and I do prefer a softer wheel. I once had really hard wheels and the slipping was a nightmare.

I just got my skates and they are 82a, I tried my skates on and wanted to do bubbels inside.. 🤣 God that was hard work cause I felt like my wheels were glued to the floor. 😂 Guess im gonna have to try outside

I wear 80”s outside. They are quite soft for inside. You may benefit from a slightly harder wheels. Perhaps around a 90.

I loved the video, this gave me a much better understanding of wheels and the difference that hardness has. Many years ago I asked the guy for the fastest wheels they had. I got some super hard, super slippery wheels. They did go faster…. But my lap times were much slower. When I hit any turn on a skate floor I slide really hard and would lose all my speed. If skate rink races were held on a straight runway floor then super hard wheels would be great for speed but unfortunately a rink is an oval shape with 2 big turns. I’m wondering what wheel size and hardness is better for going fast but also not sliding on turns too much while on an indoor rink. 🤔

A lot of it is about technique too. The super hard wheels I skated on here I have to push down into the floor with my weight more over the skate to get push without them slipping out from under me. However, at some speeds science just works against you with those super slick wheels 🛞 on those fast corners.

This is very informative. I got my impalas and I haven’t changed my wheels out . They came with 58x32 . I mainly use them indoors , just to find out the best wheels for indoor are 90 and up . And 70’s for outdoor . It makes me wonder why they put those on to begin with 🤔

Your current wheels the 58mm is the diameter and the 32 is the depth. Does it have an “a” rating also.

This is helpful, thank you! As a beginner the wheel fiasco struggle is real! I have both indoor and outdoor but I accidentally got 100A for indoor and I think I want to get another set but cannot decide between 85A through 97A. And the width not sure about. I have noticed the wheels are wider for speed but smaller for artistic. But I also think it’s just me, I need more practice.

It is definitely overwhelming. You might be good to look for around a 90a inside. However it does vary depending on the rink surface but 90 is a good in between. Especially if you already have a 100a to go to when you’re ready. The wheel width you’re exactly right. Derby tend to skate on a much wider wheel.

Hi Skatie, I learned to skate on 94As on a polished concrete hockey rink and my strongest stop is the 1 foot plow or power slide. I'd like to skate on more common surfaces like asphalt but have not been successful doing those stops on 78 or 84 outdoor wheels. Do you think I should just avoid power slides on wheels that soft? Thanks for your videos- love them!

Definitely! Those types of stops are much harder when the ground is rough and the wheels are soft.

Thank you so much! Your videos are great! I've been wondering if the Roll-Line Helium would be better or worse than 78A or 86A for outdoor artistic skating. With 78A, I can't do anything whatsoever. I haven't tried helium yet. Since we don't have an indoor rink here, I use the dance wheels to try and learn jumps, but they really aren't slippery enough. Some of my friends are using their very hard D wheels outdoors to learn jumps, but I'm hesitant because it looks like it destroys the wheel vey quickly!

The harder wheels outside do get little chunks and pits in them from the outside surfaces. I do really like the heliums outside for trails I have used them for turns and footwork outside too and they do feel nice.

hi skatie.love your video style nice soothing voice .I recently started outdoor roller skating after 45 years later it was 1975 school discos.i had own skates then.But obviously 60 now so bit creaky.im a window cleaner 40 years now son found its best to skate when I haven't worked that day as ankles ache .Been watching dirty Debbie use lady been practising my crossovers.found a outdoor netball basketball court near me.it made me feel more confident about crossovers.i did used to skate backwards etc years ago.Now I bought skates off ebay 2nd hand.seller said they quite fast skates.they are78a 62mm supreme aerobic says on wheels.i have tightened wheels up bit to slow down bit.i can stop quick with spin round turn ok.im nervous about stopping with toe stop maybe t stop better haven't tried that but I realised crossover turn can slow you if you have room.one problem is my wheels seem to catch now and again and not sure if its me or skates .dont think its me so I want to get bit of speed going along and I get this wobble now and again which jolts me.im wondering is it wheels or bearings.any advice would be greatly appreciated skatie.imoff to penzance in 2 weeks so trying get practice in. I saw a lady mature I think skating up down by sea.great place to skate..,also we have nice place near us north Wales llandudno it has wide promenade by sea but the surface there was like chipping in surface which is rough.a shame don't know if different wheels help there.i found pavements or roads better.thanks.steve

Hi Steve, sounds like you’re having a great time skating. The 78a wheels are great outside however depending on the surface of the court, a harder wheel may give you less grip and stop that wheel catching.

During my skate sesh on Thursday, I just used my Sure-Grip Original Woods, for the first time! I highly recommend them to anyone that is used to ice skating, because it has that sweet spot of having a ton of slip, with just the right amount of grip! Halfway through the sesh, I switched to My Sure-Grip Royals 101a, and I could feel allot of grip, but it made my cross overs more surefooted, where I was almost afraid that my woods would slide out from under me. I'd be afraid to even try the 78a on the rink, if I was already getting grip with the 101a. However, these also feel like I have more grip than I get with my Sure-Grip Fames 95a. So, I don't know if my Royals were passed through a quality control check. Because, the first time I tried my Royals, after my Fames I felt like I had more grip. I am sure that I weigh more than you do, but I got more slip on the woods, like you did on the 101a's. Your D-scale wheels are like my Sure-Grip Phenolics. So, I don't think after my investigation, I must have the D-scale wheels. However, I might just get the Sure-Grip velvet wheels, Just to complete my range. I don't know if I want to try clays or not.... However, I'm sure as you must already know as a skater yourself, it's very addicting to want to try every wheel there is. Especially, when your favorite brand has something more to try!!!

I’ve been eyeing up the velvets and the all Americans. Buying skate stuff is addictive! I agree with you that some wheels don’t feel as hard as they should etc. if you want to get techie you can buy a durometer tester. A skate tech has one on the forums and she’s regularly testing wheels and saying they are not as hard / soft as labelled etc. I love a bit of skate techie geeky talk. 😂 Lots of people love the Fames. Also, the bones elite are a great wheel.

So lower the number of the A wheels softer and more indicated for outside they are? I have secondhand of those kid’s quad that are made of plastic now but I am thinking about buying a proper one to skate outside

Hey, I'm going to buy the 83a 64mm wheels but i don't know if i can still do figure skating on those wheels. If i buy them i will mainly skate at the road so i don't know if it would be a good idea to buy them if i want to do turns, jumps and spins... what do you think?

I’ve been on STD wheels. They’re from Europe. It is a softer wheel, so I can grip the floor easy in my push especially on the not so “tight” floors. When we go to a very gripy floor at a skating meet, we move much faster than we do practicing at home. The only skaters I see on the same wheel as me are in a skating club. There’s no one at the rink where I work on this wheel. The rinks I normally skate, the floors are quite small compared to the National floor, so sometimes I have to back off my skating, so I don’t run into the wall or fly if the floor. And, I hate the idea of flying off the floor coming out of the center if the Viva Cha Cha. But, that’s a fun dance.

Just had a look at the STD wheels. They look very similar to Roll-Like wheels I’ve not heard of them before. It’s always fun on a different floor. Do you take extra sets of different hardness / softness wheels to deal with competition floors?

No, I don’t. I have seen other skaters have two different sets of wheels. I have even seen have one different wheel mixed in with the rest of the set for 3-turns. I’ve kind of wondered about that for myself now that I’m getting into 3-turn dances for real, but I’ll let my coach say something if needed. Otherwise, I’m just trying to train myself to feel confident doing 3-turns on any floor I skate. I skate three rinks regularly every week, and I always make sure to get some 3-turns in on each floor, so I’m not used to doing it on just one floor. One floor is a tight wood floor, the second is wood and not as tight, and the third is asphalt. I had skating lesson with an out of town coach a few weeks ago, and that was the first time I had a good 3-turn lesson with someone that’s not my regular coach. He’s told to turn as I bring the free leg to parallel, and then check of course.

Great video. You know anything about the Atom Pulse outdoor wheels? My daughter got me back into skating after 20+ years. Lol. She's 10. Bought her a pair of Sure grip Boardwalks (pink) and got me the VNLA Godfathers. Someone recommended the Sure Grip Aerobics (85A) and we've been using those for outdoors. They're good for basketball courts but not so much the sidewalks. People say the Pulses are the way to go for outdoor wheels. We both use Bones Reds bearings and swap to indoor wheels when hitting the rink. I'm using Rollerbones 103A and she wants to move up to my old 98As, from her Medallion 96As. Having a blast at the rink but sidewalks in N.Y are hit or miss. I like the sound of those 83As. Gonna check those out.

Yeah. I’d say you like a hard wheel indoors. You may prefer the harder wheel outside. I love my heliums at 83a

I prefer a harder wheel outside because of that.. See how you go depending on the surface the 90 might be a little bit foot buzzy for trails skating but definitely give them a try. You’ll notice a lot more speed than the 78’s. Have fun xx

I see that you put bont glow wheels in outdoor but also in indoors, would you say this is best option for a begginer thats is trying to learn some dance moves and basic tricks on indoors most of the time, but casually skating outside? Thank you!

An 83a can work inside and outside. It will feel sticky inside but that can be good for learning as it slows you down and give more control. But for turns etc you will need to pick your feet up more so there are definitely pros and cons to a softer wheel inside.

I would like to purchase some softer wheels for outdoors, because my current wheels are pretty hard (I used to do figure indoor skating) and I struggle to grow speed, but I found out that wheels are very expensive. Do you have any recommendations for a cheaper variant of softer outdoor wheels?

Depending on your location. But in the UK the roll-line heliums are very reasonably priced and come in packs of 8. They’re my favourite outside wheel.

I love the roll-line helium for outside skating but for dance skating you might want something a bit smaller for manuverability. But I do use them for dancing outside anyway.

I'm looking for my first pair of quad skate at age 63, and I will mainly skate outdoor on the bike path, so I prefer the soft and big wheels (78A, 62mm or 65mm). Your link for CLAS FOX 78A 65mm wheels with bearing ABEC 9, but most roller skates in the local shops are with bearing ABEC 7. Are they compatible each other?

Absolutely. When buying bearings the important bit is the 608 part. That’s the size of the bearing. 8mm 22mm 7mm. The Abec rating has very little ‘bearing’ on roller skates as we don’t get up to the type of speeds that Abec would be noticeable.

I just got some outdoor light up wheels (clas fox 65mm 78a. They are only slightly bigger than the ones I’m used to for trail skating but when I tighten the bolts all the way, they don’t spin! Using the old bearings help but that spacer (necessary for luminosity) still keeps it sticking. They don’t continue to roll by themselves unless they are noticeably loose. I took apart the new bearings and the lubricant looks gummy. Should I tighten these wheels all the way like I usually do with spacers? Should I clean and lube the new bearings the way I have successfully done with my old ones?

I tend to tighten and then release the nut a little until I get a free roll, the trouble is if the roll is too free they stop lighting up. I get a free roll and then take my spanner with so I can adjust once I get to the rink. There’s a sweet spot with light ups. Make sure they’re not so loose that the nut shows above the axle, always have a couple of turns of axle showing above the nut.

I tried skating there today with my off-ice skates and wheels (soft wheels, hardness unknown), and it was super grippy. I had almost no slide whatsoever. I will get quad skates soon. Sadly most skate board wheels won’t work as the hub is too deep set inside the wheel so the wheel wouldn’t sit correctly on a quad skate.

as i see it now - depends on how dirty they get / where and how often are you skating, outdoors and dirty floors obviously worse. I designed myself a mechanized bearing washer to not shake them in that bones jar, wich i am lazy for, so i can do it once a month (two sets), but once a two months complete IPA clean, airdry, then lightly lube them. I am skating only on kwik nitride or better, so i guess if somebody has usual generic bearings it does not matter that much, i mean - it is harder to feel earlier that bearings need to be cleaned.

I almost never clean my bearings. I have a lot of zz (closed bearings) so I just roll them until they don’t roll anymore. To be honest most of my wheels I just use for ever. I do occasionally replace them if they get a flat or start to round off but I move them around a lot to try and stop uneven wear

💕💕. Getting light up wheels for indoors is quite tricky. As most light up wheels come in at 85A. However, luminous wheels, you can get in 97a and 100a. In my more recent videos I’m using the 100a luminous wheels. They’re very pretty, as are the 97a.

Hi I needed some help with picking the right wheels. Right now I skate on a coated wooden floor. My wheels right now are indoor RC Medallion 96A and I’m having a hard time skating smoothly they seem to be sticky and gripping the floor when I try to move. What indoor wheel would you recommend?

I bought a pair of SFR white skates (10 years ago) with creamy colour wheels which have SOVEREIGN written on them & a crown image. They have ABEC 7 bearings. I am trying to find out what hardness they are as I can not see anything related to this on the actual wheel. They are old & need replacing so I would like to use these wheels as a gauge for purchasing new ones. I hope someone out there could help. Many thanks for all that you do Regards Samm

Tennis courts are often a strange surface and can sometimes require a harder wheel as they can be spongy. I’d perhaps try what you have already and see how it goes but 78a should be good for most trails

So the A scale goes from 78-100a the 78’s are soft for outside and the 100’s are very hard but the D’s are even harder. Not sure what happened to B and C! 😂💕😀🛼

Thanks Skatie, really good info. Im a rink speed skater from '78-'84 but would like to restart again n go outdoors also. Do you know (approximately) what hardness speed skates were back in the early 80s? I was rockin 'Flyer-5' speed skates. But also took a few figure skate classes when i was younger. And a little roller hockey later. Also do you know what hardness old rink hire skates wouldve possibly been in the 80s? I have a pair of hire skates from a junk market sale. Am thinking of putting 83A on them for outdoor? I wouldve gone 78a, as my good quality rollerblades in the 90s had really really cushioney wheels ...felt so smooth (no vibration), loved it! But when you said 78a will slow you down, thats a no no for me. So maybe 83a you think? I will either keep my standard hire wheels for rinks, or may even go harder. I plan to use 2 sets of wheels, rather than a happy medium, which may be tooo much compromise. Also, back in 83 there were 'quick release' axles. So if you wanted to do a wheel change, it was a small flick lever instead of a wheel bolt. About 30secs to 1min to change all 8 wheels.

One brand still does those quick release axels. I haven’t tried them personally. I would think the speed wheels would have been hard. Whether that was be D or A scale it’s hard to say. A lot of the artistic stuff back in the 80’s / 90’s was D. I’d say give the wheels you’ve got a go. You’ll quickly feel if they’re too sticky or bumpy for what you’re doing. Have lots of fun it’s great to have you back skating again. 💕⭐️🛼🛼

I will use my old school rink rental skates (sure grip S/deluxe 7, with the standard looking red 'Australian Hustler' wheels, which i'de assume would be a little on the hard side) for indoor. But for rough outdoor sidewalks, paths, streets, and roads, it seems a bit vibratey. So ide like a more cushioney ride. Could you please tell me, do you think 83A wheels would slow me down (noticably)??? ...for someone who was mainly a speed skater (40yrs ago)? Or do you think they are still plenty fast?

Hi Skatie, I have just got some roll line Giotto 57mm in a 53d hardness. I usually skate on roll line 92a ice wheels. I had a little roll at home and they feel so much slippier than my old wheels! I figured I’d just pick the medium hardness and they’d be similar to the medium hardness of ice wheels - am I going to break my neck at the rink?! 😆🙈 I’m a bit afraid to try them out at the rink this weekend!

The d scale is much harder than the A. I skate in 80d for rhythm skating because they just slide without having to lift my feet. You’ll need to get low in the knee and really keep your weight over your skate. Once you’re used to them you might find you prefer them being slippy. (Much easier for turns too)

@@Skatie thank you! I tried them out after my lesson today and for the first time I could easily do 3 turns on my good foot, and I even managed one on my other foot! I also managed to spin much more consistently too. The only thing I struggled with was pushing off from a t stop to do edges. I can’t seem to muster the power that I can with my ice 92s. Overall though it was a lot less traumatic than it could have been and I didn’t fall!

@@msmegibson sounds like they’re working out. The hardest thing with hard wheels is to get power. Keep really low and really focus the weight over the front inside wheel of the pushing foot. You’ll get the feel for it.

I actually find it easier to stop with harder wheels as they slip so I can drag them sideways on the ground and apply more pressure to come to a gradual stop. I think I do a stop inside on the hard wheels whilst I’m chatting during the video. Actually anytime I’m wearing my skates without stoppers I’m in the harder wheels. The edge drill video from a few weeks ago will have lots of me using the harder wheels stopping, pushing etc

I remember when i did figure skating AGES ago they made us get one wheel for each skate that was just for spinning, it was this really hard white one and it was my ENEMY. Is that still a thing?

Haha yes I used to do that. Put an extra hard wheel in the right place for the spinning wheel to slip but have a grippier wheel for the landing foot so that wheel would hold if the landing was off!!! 😂

If you’re inside you might like a harder wheel. 90a. If you’re starting to try more intermediate turns and spins etc you might prefer a slightly harder wheel than that, 98a? But the trade off is it will be harder to push off from a t-push etc.

This is great. Now question is, since I'm only going to skate indoors and it's been several years, (you don't retain muscle memory in skating as well as, say in sking or riding) and I'm going from ice to quads for the 1st time what wheels have the closest characteristics to a blade? I don't spin or jump. Just footwork/dance moves. Not super advanced either. Mostly mohawks, choctaws and 3 turns.

If you’re skating mainly inside and used to the slip of ice I’d go for something around a 90a. If you have a softer wheel inside you’ll be fighting against The grip in turns etc.

Sadly I don’t think anyone is insane enough to make these anymore. These are from the 90’s when we didn’t believe in things like safety! 😂. They’re boiani star so if you spot any on eBay grab them quick. They do occasionally come up.

For outside it’s better to go bigger as it gives better ground clearance for the kingpin / plate so it doesn’t hit debris as you’re rolling. You won’t notice much difference in the hardness between the two. Although I do prefer a 85a outside as I find the 78a is a little sluggish and I have to push more to get the same amount of roll in the 85’s.

The bottom bolt only needs to be turned to give more or less movement in the trucks. If changing the wheels only the wheel nuts need to be removed.

So question, I’m not sure if you are familiar with fiberglass wheels they are super super super hard wheels that don’t have a hardness rating it’s the type of wheel we use out here in California for our regional skate style, how would you compare the 80D wheel to that. If you don’t know them as fiberglass wheels you may know them as suregrip original wheels.

I’ve not tried the type of wheels you mention but the 80D have very little traction. They more glide across the top of the surface. They’re great for rhythm moves as I don’t lift my feet they just slide.

Dear Katie, Would you say that the D wheels are generally harder than the A wheels? and the hardness (slipperiness) goes up with increasing D values? I want to be able to do pivots and spins on a floor similar to yours. The options are 47, 49, 53, 57, and 60D and 99A. What do you suggest?

I prefer D wheels. They are definitely harder. The rule is add 45 to the D scale to get the A equivalent. I’m not totally in agreement with this as I think the D wheels feel harder than that but that’s the recommended way to transpose.

Oh no. It could be the rink is quite sticky. When this happens it can help to talk to the regulars at the rink to see what they roll on. As you may need to go harder to get some slip.

Hey Skatie, so I received my new skates a few days ago and when I try them on the inner side of my big toe knuckle (if that makes any sense?) starts hurting when I have my foot in certain positions. Does this mean the skates are too small? They're really comfy other than this one issue and its on both of my feet. Sorry to bother you with my questions haha I wasn't sure where else to ask!

You could try different lacing patterns to take the pressure off of that part of your foot. It’s ok to have the laces in the toe stop quite loose. It could also be a sock seam pushing into your foot, you could try wearing your socks inside out so the seams don’t rub.

Thank you!! I'll have a look into some lacing patterns and test various socks out! I think because the shoe is leather its also quite hard, I've tried squishing it in places and that's also helped! Thank you for replying, I absolutely love your videos and the boost of confidence they give me!

Are 58 mm indoor or outdoor wheels?

Smaller wheels do tend to be more suited for indoor. Large wheels work better outside as they deal with debris and bumps better.

Yes. You’ve got it. Get those turns slipping but then it’s harder to push off. It’s all about working what balance works for you. Figure wheels tend to be bigger too to get round those circles ⭕️ on one push

How did you even get bearings to fit into your rolline wheels? I can't get any bearings to fit. I have so many wheels and have never had this problem. The one rolline wheel I managed took me so long that when my attempt at the second bearing was met with the same struggle I was officially done with them. I think it's cos the inner core is hard. The only reason I managed to get one bearing in the first place was cos I literally used a hammer to hammer it in, but then saw I was damaging the bearings cos I had to use so much force which was denting the bearing. I don't want to damage all 16 just for these fucking wheels. I'm gonna sell these wheels I'm legit done with them. No wheels should be this hard to put bearings in. For the struggle alone they can go.

Oh no sorry you’ve had so much trouble. I find the bearings harder to remove than other wheels. Have you tried a bearing press? I get my bearings in using a stack of bearings on the axel. That way I wiggle them in but that doesn’t work for everyone. For really stubborn wheels a bearing press usually does the trick.

😂 love this description. These are roll-line wheels. You’re mostly likely to find these at a skate shop that supplies the artistic skaters as they’re quite specialist. They maybe a few suppliers online too. skatesus.com/product/magnum-57mm/
