I tested three of the best known professional watercolor brands in the world to see which one is the best for beginner watercolor artists.
I picked Daniel Smith, Schmincke Horadam and Winsor and Newton. They are high-quality watercolor paints for artists that both beginners and professionals can enjoy and improve their painting skills with.

To be honest I don't stick to one brand. I do have my favourite colours from some different brands and in my palette are. Schmincke Horadam, Winsor & Newton, Sennelier and Daniel Smith Paints. The european brands are definitely more accessible here in Europe, but some colours like Undersea Green & Titanium Buff are just great from Daniel Smith. Also I would love to try out Roman Szmal some time, they do have some incredible colours as well. But my current goal is to downsize my palette to my favourite and most used colours.

Yeah, I'm starting to feel a little bit wasteful having so many great sets. I'm not quite at that stage where I pick favourite colors from different brands, but I can definitely appreciate the quality ☺️

All three brands are solid choices, but I like to pick and choose from brands to find my favourite colours.

Thank you very much for this. I don’t have one brand to match everything I need… but I do think, that the best comparison would be to really take the same pigments. Even with the same pigments you will have slightly different outcomes. But if you compare totally different pigments like a cadmium reds with pyroll Scarlett, this is comparing two different properties, like an apple with a plum so to speak. 😊 I think the best is first to decide what you want to paint. And then to decide on the pigments, e.g. granulating or not. Transparent or not. Staining or not. This depends on what you want to do. If you want to layer a lot you will not use opaque colours for this, since that makes no sense…. If you want to lift colours you will not use phthalo colours, because they are staining and are really difficult to lift. BUT great for layering, because they will not lift and are transparent ….. when I began 5 years ago with watercolour I would have never thought how complex this type of medium is. But I love it so much. Thank you again. 😊

Qor has most of my favorite colors. The reason for me is that Qor has less color shift and more transparency. I’m not a big fan of granulation, so the lack of granulation suits me. Nevertheless, there are particular colors from particular brands that are better than anyone’s.

Qor isn't easy to get where I am but I've heard great things about it! 😀

I had a set, be carefully with them (Qor watercolors), they are genials, but the brand says can be carcinogenic.

My Schmincke French Ultramarine is much more granulating than yours. Did you swatch the ultramarine finest?

My fav is W&N, but i have to say - sadly these color wheels are not doing any of the brands justice, especially for schmincke. There are no actually secondary colors in the wheel, just shades of grey.
