Spread and control is one character where artists are almost equally divided. At this point it's generally accepted that it's a matter of personal taste. The spread test should be a draw.

Thank you for your input. I'm finding out more and more that most things in watercolors are a matter or personal taste hehehe which makes sense, it's art, it's supposed to be personal and everything is acceptable. Have a great day!

After you let swatches of darker colors dry, did you notice any white speckling in your washes, particularly where more masstone? My experience with Arches paper has been years apart, sheets vs pads, different retailers, and every time it has been terrible relative to other papers. It's thirsty, rough against the brush, and produces white speckling, all of which are symptoms of bad sizing. Each time, I've used the paper within weeks of receiving it, so I can only assume it's some upstream issue (manufacturing and/or warehouse storage). Either way, I fail to understand how so many people recommend this paper when my own experience has consistently been so bad.
@sandyowncrafts3 күн бұрын
I had that issue with Baohong, it was like a white dusting I couldn't quite figure out. With Arches I haven't seen that. Do you use the green one too? Could that be the difference?
@mnap15953 күн бұрын
@@sandyowncrafts Exactly. My most recent experience was with their 9x12" cold press pad (green cover). However, I've experienced it with their imperial (full, 22x30") sized sheets as well. For this reason, and simply because it's just a great paper, Saunders Waterford has become my go-to.

Maaaaaaaaaaan, I just got one and I'm hating it! I come from traditional Sable brushes, I find these water brushes so hard to control. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I mix my colours on the palette, I try to get some colour on the bristles, but they seem to suck all the pigment in (not in the water reservoir tho), and when I put it on the paper, there is not much pigment saturation. I mix some more, and then I press to get some more water, and all the pigment suddenly comes out, so it gets too saturated and mostly ruins my paintings. What am I doing wrong?
@sandyowncrafts5 күн бұрын
Yeah, if you come from sable brushes, the difference is huge! It's not that you doing anything wrong, it's that you need to know your waterbrush before painting with it, each are different in terms of how to release water and how much at a time. So what I would suggest is doing some exercises beforehand to get a hang of it. Once you do, they're a lot of fun! Good luck!

Could you please tell me why you cannot dry granulated watercolors??
@sandyowncrafts10 күн бұрын
Hi. I'm not saying you can't use a heat gun for granulating watercolors, I'm saying for this colorful effect, I've read you have to give it time to do its thing. I hope that helps!

What i regret I didn’t knew sooner is that the quality of the paper matters more than the quality of the pigment.

I can explain why the 75% WN paper shows off the colors more vividly: It doesn't absorb the water as quickly - that is, it isn't as "thirsty" - as the 100% cotton Arches paper. With more water sitting on the surface of the paper for a bit longer, the pigments in the paint can move around in it, group up like ants at a picnic, and provide stronger color. Great video, by the way. Your enthusiasm is energizing.

Hi, about pans and tubes, from W&N the formula is a little different, because the pans are extruded and cut, not poured and repeated, like Schmincke. I think the pans are a little more concentrated. Tubes are useful if doing a large painting and needing to mix large quantities of a particular wash. The pans are useful here if you have a vintage heavy palette as you can cut them to fit the 1/4 pan sets. Tube colour can rust those palettes. I like W&N for their clean mixes. Their reds are especially bright and true. I think the rose is one of the prettier of most of the brands as it’s slightly warmer, but that’s entirely a matter of taste.

A really nice professional set all the colours you could want. I would probably not need about five of the colours personally so would use them and replace with some convenient ones... eg a Naples yellow is always handy, a turquoise burnt umber would be amongst my chosen. Certainly a great start up set that you can tweek colours look vibrant. Thanks for sharing its on my list.

This resonates with me. I get so precious with my supplies. I researched and bought the "min-max" paints I could find: the best quality I could afford. But then, I mix up these tiny little puddles of paint because I'm nervous about "wasting" it. But then I don't like the paintings because the colors are dull because I didn't use enough paint. I've been trying more experimental techniques where I mix up whole bowls of paint then pour, flick, squirt, sprinkle, etc. to see what I get. I'm definitely happier with my results when I mix up more concentrated paint. It's a good lesson.

I have an inexpensive sketchbook that I devote to trying out colour mixing. When I am in a funk, I choose three colours from my palette and spend some time just mixing them to see what I get. Nice to just play with the colours and I can keep a record of what I mixed in case I want to use it somewhere.

This was the best unboxing for a beginner. I couldn't find anyone who showed taking the paint out of the wrapper. I didn't know what to do with them. should I keep them in the small plastic tray or remove it like you did? What is best for a beginner?
@sandyowncraftsАй бұрын
Hi. It really is a personal choice. For me, I like to be able to remove the pans from the set when I want to so taking the plastic out works for me. For other people, having the pans perfectly aligned works better. Give it a try both ways and decide what you prefer. Have a great day!
