A friend of mine and his wife saw him in Vegas back in the early 80's. My friend was in a wheelchair so they were seated up front. Don picked on him mercilessly the whole night. After the show he had my friend and his wife brought back stage where he thanked them for being good sports. He sat and talked with them for about an hour, took pictures with them and signed autographs. He was a class act.

Similar thing happened when I saw him many years ago at the Melody Tent in Hyannis on Cape Cod! A lady in wheelchair was really picked on during show but afterwards, with a brief time for him to change clothes and such, he made sure to talk to her, get pix with her, etc. She was thrilled! Really nice guy off stage! I still remember him wearing a sweater after show that looked very ordinary.

That is because Don Rickles comes from a time when people knew how to take a joke. Now people are so uptight, they couldn't pull a sewing needle out of their butt with a TRACTOR! Rickles, like Chapelle and other GREAT comedians use humor to point out the idiocy of TRUE racism and ignorance with a tongue-in-cheek way of poking fun at himself and others. But the problem today is that MOST people are too DUMB to understand the irony of the joke. It goes right over their heads and they believe the guy REALLY means what he says. That is why Chappelle is in so much hot water with the lgbtqwerty community. They are dumb as well as ignorant. But still HILARIOUS! They don't know how to laugh at themselves. I love your channel and your personality and attitude. Subscribed! We need more people like you posting on youtube. Laid back and knows how to take a joke! @@wood2103The problem is more that with the internet and everyone all of a sudden are able to express their feelings online, it’s becoming apparent that people have been offended by racist jokes for as long as they’ve been around, people just ignored them and never heard about them. Think racist murders by cops are a new thing? Naww, you just never heard much about them until everyone and their mothers had a cellphone with a camera on it. Then there's the Ketchup story. Rickles, Newhart and their wives were out to dinner with Sinatra, and some in his entourage. Some of the food was late getting to the table. Rickles had ordered a burger and fries which came to the table. Sinatra's order was late and he was getting irate. Finally he got so mad that he picked up a bottle of ketchup on the table and threw it against the will shattering it. Rickles without hesitation picked picked up a french fry and and looked down to the head of the table saying "Hey Frank, will you pass the Ketchup" ? It broke all the tension in the room as every body laughed especially Sinatra. Frank Sinatra made it Ok to be insulted by Rickles. There was no malice in his act, and that’s what it was an act. The wokeism of today lack that most vital ingredient for happiness, a sense of humour. They look for offence where none is intended, it’s being so miserable that keeps them happy. He had a famous rib on Obama at the Shirley MacLaine AFI which I sense was cut out. Idk if Obama laughed or not but it does not matter because this is a figure involved with politics and in politics you also have the side that is ultra sensitive. They pounded him in the news, but he faded out. It didn't matter because he still did shows and so many people respected him. He earned it, and it was from the days where this pc garbage wasn't lying around. What I am about to say is based on observation. Had he been trying to have a career today, imo, young and fresh, he probably couldn't. He has the talent to do it. We are canceling him again, even though he's "earned" it and is as appreciated as he is. This is all because of oversensitive angry subjective hypocrites who will overanalyze everything where people will be absolutely miserable. Its SICKENING, and people who know how to ride politics well, are probably using this to their advantage, this sensitive era, to destroy the careers of people they do not like. Morality is a very subjective thing because of different definitions in different cultures. Anger and emotion cloud judgement.

Our family on a vacation in the mid '70's saw him at the Riviera in LasVegas. He kept us in stitches for what must have been an hour or more. An His material is impromtu or spontaneous, not rehearsed. It has to be since the audience and guests are different and each insult is personal at that particular person. Wow. And he was quick as lightning, too. Of course he was much younger. However, he seemed to keep his spark well into his old age. Fantastic comedian. And all clean, i.e. family friendly. Sort of like when we saw the great Red Skelton in Reno, another great and clean comedian. Humor generated at life itself completely devoid of profanity. It's the best type of comedy.

Saw his Vegas act, he went table by table and ripped the sh-t out of each person. Funniest night of my life. At the break he had expensive champagne delivered to each victim table. His closing statement about the ability to laugh at ourselves was pure class. Sadly it is an ability that many lack today.

If you ever watch him do comedy, he always ends with a positive message. One of inclusion. He uses that end to make sure people know he is not serious about anything he says. But before a show, he would send out people to check the crowd out to see how far he can take things. He died 6 years ago, right as cancel culture and woke crap started popping up, and seemed unfazed by it. Everyone still loved him right to the end.

I don't know who else could get/have gotten away with these insults and roasting, Don Rickles had mastered that 'art' of savage and brutal burns without having his nose punched out, he was an equal opportunity roaster, but at the end of his roasts, he would show he didn't mean it by saying some nice words to whomever he had insulted. I am glad you enjoyed that clip and that you didn't fake being offended like many would probably be nowadays!

Early in Ray Romano's (Everybody Loves Raymond) career, after a show he was approached by Rickles. Don said to him, "I saw your set kid." Ray asked, "Did you like it?" (Or something to that effect.) Don took Ray's hand, and cupped both of his hands around it in the most loving, caring way and simply asked him, "Have you considered a career in food delivery?" I think it's safe to say he liked it. (And rightfully so. Ray Romano is hilarious.) As a comedian, getting picked on by Rickles is about the same as being a musician and getting your song parodied by Weird Al Yankovic.

I wanted to share this story. A friend of mine who was a budding comedian/actor was attending a class for aspiring entertainers in NYC many years ago (I wish I could remember the school or venue now; I can't and my friend is no longer with us). After the class was over, my friend walked out and who was standing on the front steps of the building but Don Rickles. Thinking quickly, he walked up to Don and used one of his own insults on him: "Nice jacket, Don - what did you do, shoot a mattress?" Rickles laughed, and Don spoke with my friend for about ten minutes or so, gave him some career advice and wished him well. That's the kind of guy he was. RIP my friend Mark, a funny guy in his own right, and RIP Don Rickles.

I lived during those days and they were not as you remembered. Interracial love scenes on television were taboo (Black man/White woman). Gay romance was non-existent and any openly gay person had to be presented as an over-the-top Liberace type character. Asian men were portrayed as servants or martial arts experts. You never saw an Asian man (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) in a romantic role. Selective memory is a hell of thing.
