Our Brush Hog mower is wrecked. It needs a lot of work to get it fixed. I think it is time for a to find a replacement rotary cutter. So I went searching for one, and I found a Bush Hog 287, 7 foot mower for sale and bought it. Now it is time to hitch it up and test it out.

@@danielbond9755 not sure where you are seeing these "thousands of acres" family farms. But it sure isn't that way in my area (north-central KS).

@@willhorting5317 I mean that, at least in my area (Wisconsin/Illinois), the actual farmers are working thousands of acres. They may be renting lots of smaller parcels, but those aren't family farms any more, even if they may be legally listed as independent farms for tax purposes (since the only "farming" is renting out the land to a big farmer).

Get your torch and heat it up red hot then spray it with cold water. That will shock thrust loose and that will help you get it apart. Then just put some new seals on the box. Fill the gearbox with corn head grease. That will help minimize leaks. Then just put a new piece of angle iron on top of the deck andPut two new blades on. She’s ready to rock ‘n’ roll

Perhaps the best thing would be to make the old bush hog into the one to use for all the as yet uncut areas; make it the sacrifice cutter. It keeps you from wacking something with the new cutter. Fix it as you have time and money. It could be an emergency backup, loaner, etc. Consider an inexpensive one-handed battery chain saw beside you on the tractor for your trips around the edges of your fields. You have way too much fun!

Always worth upgrading if every time you go to use said something you have to work on it. Nothing worse than trying to farm and have a full time job, then to have a day off and waste it trying to make something work rather than actually using it. That's where I'm at now. Work a full time plant job and trying to start a farm so I definitely get it...

We live in North Central Arkansas, close to the Buffalo River and our place is all hillside. Most of it is so steep that we can't run a tractor on it, or won't. I watched a tractor 'pop a wheelie' with my hubby driving it because the hill was so steep. So last fall we bought ourselves a zero turn mower and use it to mow the steep places.

To use an old saying, you did good. Purchasing the newer, larger brush hog was a good choice. When you talked about another one I cringed thinking much of the new stuff is much thinner metal and just junk as much of it comes from China. I watched another channel where he bought a brush hog made in China and it had something go wrong every time he used it. I am glad you spared yourself of that problem.

Suggestion: You could modify old 3 pt hitch mower by cutting off rear half of deck and make a carry box for chain saw, etc. I took a 3pt corn planter, removed all but frame and made a carrier . I bolted an old pick up cargo box to it. I store chainsaws, axe, sledge hammer, gas, oil grease . raqgs & tools in it. I have a small farm trailer I pull for cutting & loading firewood. If I get caught in rain or wet snow am able to close lid...keep everything dry. Remember, repurposing is a must on the farm. Hope this helps.

Removing the cross arm on a bush hog is about the hardest thing to do.. I made a rig with a 20 ton jack and even after heating the cross arm red hot... it still wouldn't move.. but a hit with a 20 lb hammer added enough shock to get it to pop... Then the gearbox seals and bearings were obsolete... Go figure!

I have a Case, JD & 1959 Bush 5' pull type with wheel/tires on rear of unit. After 24 yrs of use I only had to replace tires. Easy to grease, sharpen blades, never had to add fluid to gearbox. I like the other two, but Bush Hog out shines them., very quiet & durable. Also, if you run counter clockwise around field, you will get a bigger swath & avoid much tree branch exposure to muffler & air filter. Doing great.

I use an old woods finish mower for a brush hog. It's definitely not designed for it but if you keep the blades nice and sharp you can have the best looking cut after wards even if it's nasty and over grown. And I can't believe how strong the deck has been! I hit it on rocks and junk all the time. Those woods mowers are good. What I really like about it is that it's belt driven so when I get into some bad stuff it just seems to throw the belt and that's it. I have broke a blade before but even then it just throws the belt and wants to keep on going.
