Still rocking my MDR-1000X pair four generations later. Taped together with black duct tape, but sounding great :P Thanks for the review. Perhaps it's time I upgraded, if only for the call quality. Those must be crazy convenient for charging considering I seldom have to think about charging these ones five years on and wearing them most of the day.

I am so happy the anc stays on and the ability to watch videos on your phone as you call someone to block out unwanted outdoor sounds. It's so amazing and makes it so people aren't as distracting anymore making you wonder where that construction noise is coming from. This is better than my old xm4. They always disconnected the anc. And I had to hear the world around me when I talked. My autistic mind did not like that one bit.

Do you find the xm5s rendering of your voice annoying on transparency mode/when making calls for any significant amount of time? I tried them on in an electronics store and my voice did sound somewhat processed when speaking. I would be primarily using these headphones to switch between music and zoom calls (with external mic) in a quiet WFH environment (I am on calls ~4-5 hrs a day). However, the APM felt very heavy on my head, and my first reflex was to take them off. But transparency mode seems better on APM. Which would you pick?

I just recently returned the XMS 5's. Take everything great he had to say about them, and I'd agree. However, the ear pads are incredibly soft, and after an hour or two began to hurt my ears. I wanted to love these, I'm a huge Sony fanboy, but I couldn't take the uncomforted I felt after only a couple of hours. Amazing headphones but defiantly try them out with a company that has a great return policy.

How are these if there's wind? I know you did the test but I am thinking a car with the windows down scenario where there's a bit of intensity in the wind/air due to speed. I have an old sennheiser pxc 500 and they become completely useless and I have to turn off anc.

Great review as always! Just wanted to ask you if you could test them paired with a laptop (windows)? I'm looking for a pair to be used for a lot of work related calls over Microsoft Teams and currently all headphones I used were not working ideally with windows and I had to rely on the built in laptop microsoft, which is utter s***. Can you shed some light on such scenario?

Vast majority of call lag comes from internet. Bluetooth lag matters more for video playback.

Thanks, but the best for calls? How does this compare to the Jabra Evolve2 85h? Jabra IMO have always been the best for calls and business by a long shot. Also no sidetone on phone calls is a deal breaker for me. Jabra and Bose have sidetone or self voice which allow you to hear your voice when on a phone call so it doesn't sound like your talking under water and know how loud your speaking. If Sony added sidetone, then maybe it would be a contender.

Great video thank you. I use my Bose nc700 for all professional activities, calls, zoom calls, voice messages etc. My Airpods max less and less because of the weight and only on the couch. In addition, I lack the opportunity to hear my own voice in my ears when making calls. Is that fine with the XM5? So like the Bose 700? ANC on your ears and still directs the voice to your ears? Thanks very much

They are great, if you can stand the discomfort from the ANC which puts an insane amount of pressure on your eardrums (why don’t more people discuss this?). And the smudge-attracting matte black finish is really annoying for a set of premium phones.

I have been waiting for the XM5's to come out before purchasing my next headphones but I've also heard so many good things about the Bowers and Wilkins PX7's, the B&O HX's, Sennheiser Momentum 3's, and the Shure Aonic50's. If you've tried those other ones would you be able to recommend your absolute top pick for overall best sound quality?

I have not had those other models. Sennheiser M series I have had. You cant go wrong. Best sound signature on the market. But call quality suffers. I have had B&O too not very impressed. Never had Shure. But I will see how our budget is for this month and reachout and see if they will send them over.

@@ebpman That's funny you mention that about the B&O cause it seems to be true. Premium headphones but I feel like people either love them or kinda hate them. The Sony, Senn, and B&W were the top choices on my list. I would have the Mark Levinson 5909 on there too cause they're supposed to be incredible but I just don't have $900 to spend on a pair of headphones

@@MrJ.31 i have the H95 not sure if my unit is faulty but i love the sound, ANC nope I'm not saying anything, and calls. Momentum 4 is coming out and i can't wait hopefully there be review before i purchased them. My brother needs headphones and of course I'm give him my h95's which is so uncomfortable and tight on ears

I have the bose 700 as my go to. I travel alot and I love the case size of the bose. But the change has been OK. It's just a bit larger for me to travel with. This will sound crazy, but I missed the thump you get out of these. Even starting Netflix is BA BOOM. Vs baboom. Big difference on audio richness. Also feel anc is better. I have to do more testing but so far 3 others have agreed with me. It's just the case size. Performance is better, calls are close to each other.

just bought this today because of this review. Dog barks, rooster crowing, fan noise, construction outside home, washing dishes, music on other rooms, tv ... were silenced on voice calls. the microphone's ANC is better than what you actually hear (speaker ANC) on your sorroundings hahahhh. i dont need Krisp subscription for this device. thanks much for this review.

@@mvmnts if tremendous noise suppression is not required, definitely yes. It has long battery life, longer than my XM3. For latency, somebody measured it through manual timing on youtube, its around 180-300ms latency on android/ios. No info on desktop.

I bought the xm5 because of the noise cancelling capabilities but honestly the comfort is terrible for me. The padding on the ear cups are very minimal and my ears hurt after an hour or two. My momentum 4 doesn’t have this problem and feels way more comfortable on my head and also destroys the xm5 in sound quality, But the momentum 4 doesn’t have as good noise cancelling as the Sony. I take them both with me while travelling and only use the XM5 when I want a quieter environment to sleep. Not for music.

For all of those that use this for office calls, webex/zoom meetings, etc. Would it be great for it? I am currently using the WF-1000xm4. And I have loved them, but sometimes I have people around speaking or laughing in the office. I am thinking of buying these. It seems like the WF are more designed for like going to the gym, for a walk or jogging.

I do agree that the call quality has improved and the sound quality has improved as well however, I don't think that they beat the technics A800. Particularly on call quality. The A800 have a feature called noise suppression which is another version of active noise cancellation but for the phone calls and it suppresses the noise around the phone call. It's very impressive. You should take a look into it.

Disagree. Having tested both in real world scenerios the Sonys are much better. The a800 you have to talk louder and have just my voice enabled and then you sound robotic

Mine are coming today and I’m just praying the audio quality is better than my current Bose QC 35’s. I went for the Sonys because I take a lot of calls at work and I found the Bose QC 35’s a little flat and they didn’t have any QC settings. Fingers crossed these headphones are good.

I have the XM4. Good sound, totally unusable to take calls in a coffee shop. Just got the Bose 700s. Good sound and excellent in noisy coffee shops that i can take (mic) conference calls. Great battery life will admit anc slightly better on the xm4

Anc sucks need better sound insulation anc effects the sound quality so your not hearing what these can do anc muffles out audio turn it off and you gain back bass and everything sounds better
