The same equipment as the Music City Star is, I think, in use on our Caltrain commuter line but we are (thank God) phasing them out and they will soon be two generations old when we get our first Stadler electric trainsets for that corridor.

Hello, Miles in Transit. It is great to find a fellow Public Transit Enthusiast. I was born and raised in Philadelphia and always loved using the public transportation to get around. Philly is quite unique because via public transit (commuter rail, bus, trolley, ferryboat, subway, PATCO, el, etc) you can travel to Wilmington, DE or Trenton, NJ. All the interstate bus companies keep the travel prices low: Flixbus, Megabus, Peter Pan, Chinabus, Greyhound, etc.....you are spoiled to live in Philly. Cheap airfare flying out of PHL, ILG, ACY, ABE, TTN, EWR, JFK, LGA. I always find it amazing how far you can travel with a modest budget when you're an avid budget traveller. Back in 2016, I travelled from Philly to Miami for $4.50 via bus transit to spend New Year's Eve in South Beach!

Philly to Miami via bus for $4.50? How? Did you have a deeply discounted fare?
@leonardus60099 ай бұрын
I booked Megabus online and would buy up the $1 fares when planning my yearly trips. The December 28, 2016 trip required 4 legs on the journey. PHILA > DC for $1; DC > ATL for $1; ATL > ORLANDO for $1; ORL > MIAMI for $1 plus the .50 booking fee. Departed Philly 0330 on 28DEC2016 and arrived Miami Airport 29DEC2016 1300hrs. Total $4.50. Easy trip from Philiadelphia to Miami on Megabus. Buy your tickets as soon as the tickets go on sale during the summer months (June/July). The travel was uneventful. All buses were on time. All stops DC, ATL, and ORL had short layovers to change buses at stations. Well worth it!!

Hey Miles as someone from Nashville and transit euathist aswell I know out the city isn't as pedestrian friendly. We do try but we are always stopped for example the Lets Move Nashville 2019 campaign would add more frequent buses and light rail and commuter rail. But it's so difficult to do that here with private companies like CXS not letting Nashville use vital rails and fear-mongering in the public around transit. For example, the nearest bus stop to me used to be a 10 min walk until it got slashed and now the nearest is a 50 mins walk with no sidewalks forcing me to use a car lol ( I do try to support the transit as much as can by riding it). but videos like yours inspired me to be part of the solution as I hope for myself to help improve transit in my city and add more pedestrians. Anyways thanks for coming and being an awesome person!

"I don't have a smartphone" Me...huh...{checks upload date}....ah ok I really enjoy your videos Miles. I always wanted to visit the USA (correction, want.. not wanted) and travel around your country using Public Transport. But I am used to the Dutch transit system obviously which is... you decide at this moment you want to take a train across country (or even to other countries in Europe)... I head to the station and buy a ticket and hop on. Only certain long distance international trains have a few seats that need a reservation (and sleeper trains to Switserland for example (a trip of about 520 miles) I hope you one day get the chance to experience train and bus travel in my country or Germany (also an epic network) to see how it CAN be done :)

I happened to stop in Dayton for dinner with my dad’s friends on my way elsewhere, and I got a huge surprise when I saw that they had trolley buses! I wasn’t as deep into transit enthusiasm at the time, and had no idea they had them. Unfortunately, I think the part of the system I saw was not being used that day, and I didn’t see any trolleys go by. Also, that Air Force base has a fantastic, completely free, air and space museums, larger than the smithsonian. Also, can you do a video showing off your map collection? It looks really interesting!

“It’s probably only the least used because of its anemic schedule” god I wish more people/governments/transit agencies understood this! They put one train/bus every hour or more in only one direction and then say “well, we can’t add any more service because no one is riding it!” Yeah, because it’s useless! Make it useful and people will ride it!

This parking lot drop off reminds me in a flashback of being dropped by a bus at the South shore plaza at midnight or maybe 11:00 p.m. after a concert down somewhere on the Cape. I think my uncle had to come and pick us up. The buses certainly weren't running. I had forgotten about that. It was like 1979...

Dayton station was recently changed, into that dump you saw. I went to dayton recently and they couldn't even keep the station open at night for the trailway bus. Unfortunately when I went the trackless trolley wasn't running at all. The Dayton RTA schedule is even worse after 8PM. Nashville MTA unfortunately recently cut service, not redesigned its routes. But that Music Star trip was awesome! I love how they didn't even bother closing the door

I suspect the reverse peak trips are run because the trains had to go back to Lebanon for operational reasons anyway, so might as well allow passengers on considering it doesn't really cost anything extra.
@tealmer35283 жыл бұрын
It does-it slows the trains down a lot because they have to stop at each station instead of running express, and it means that they can't run unless they have enough conductors.

Another fun video! That Pittsburgh run through of all transit modes was wild. More hilarious moments...especially that call! I have to ask...do you only use a flip phone? No smart phone at all? Is that just a preference? I know for me a smart phone makes travel planning/booking (especially trip changes) so much easier. Just curious. Actually the flip phone adds even more fun to your already fun videos! :)

@@MilesinTransitHow is the T these days? It used to have trolley buses. I can't remember whether they were in Cambridge... I think that's where it was. But everything I remember is from the '80s. I don't follow my friend Ed so much anymore but he used to complain about the T everyday because it was so bad at least a couple of years ago. You never knew how long it would take to get from here to there. Especially depending on how many times you had to transfer between Braintree and Fenway I guess. When I had moved enough times that it took me three different vehicles to get to work in the morning I switched to the express bus from Newton corner to Copley Square and then it was only two buses. And one of them used to be a trolley so it was like every 5 minutes but I had to walk an extra block. I could have walked one block and taken the bus to the red line in Central Square and then switched to the green line to get to whichever stop I thought might be closest to John Hancock. But the express bus was pretty good. It still seemed to take at least an hour to get home. And that's back when it didn't break down all the time

Memo: the public solutions for transit that work in places like Philly, NYC and Baltimore are going to be very different from the systems that are practical for communities found outside of the NE corridor. Cities that made the big investments in infrastructure, and equipment to serve these communities learned the hard way that empty seats cost just as must as full carriages to deliver and maintain. Ridership in most sunbelt towns doesn't justify the kind of commitment needed to build public transit.
@MilesinTransit10 ай бұрын
If you build a decent enough service it'll get good ridership! MARTA does decently well for itself, for example.
