I love that you guys always thank the operator. I can't help but do the same and feel like everyone should do so, they work their asses off. Being a bus driver (or an operator of any transit modality) is not easy, but they're out there every day operating a key public service that holds our cities together, for less pay than they deserve.

8:58 Miles, as someone that routinely has to transfer from the 17 to the BSL express and often has to sprint down those stairs because the B2 doesn't run often enough, you have to go two steps at a time and you can actually go pretty fast.

This looked fun! Lifelong Philadelphian here who knows the SEPTA system as it was pre-COVID-19. Lucky you were able to make all them transfers. Tip for winter outdoor travels (esp transit): always dress warmer than you think you need. A missed transfer can become miserable quickly when under-dressed overnight in winter.

I'm a lifelong Philly native as well. SEPTA is pretty much the same for the most part except certain long bus routes were shortened post-COVID 19. Route 23 used to travel all the way from Chestnut Hill to 10th and Oregon. Now the route is shortened from Chesnut Hill to 11th and Market. Necessary decision imo because driving from Chestnut Hill all the way to Oregon av near the bottom of South Philly is a painfully long route. You're much better off just catching the Broad Street subway

This reminds me of trips my friends and I would do when we were your age. Back then, however, our goal would be to ride without ever sitting our butts on a diesel-powered vehicle. There were lots more trolley routes back then and we only rode them, trackless trolleys, subway and el. Add in the old Red Arrow trolleys & P. & W. (Norristown high speed as it is called today) to the mix as well. We could cover almost the entire city that way not to mention the RED Arrow & P & W parts of the region.

Just thought I would make a list of all of the modes you guys took here: 1. Articulated bus 2. Non-articulated bus 3. Suburban bus (I don't think this one counts) 4. Norristown High Speed Line 5. Market-Frankford Line 6. City trolley 7. Regional rail 8. Suburban trolley 9. OWL bus 10. Trackless trolley 11. OWL Link (wait, what's the difference?) 12. Direct bus 13. Broad Street Line
@MilesinTransit
@MilesinTransit 2 жыл бұрын
Suburban bus may be pushing it, but SEPTA does consider City and Suburban Transit to be separate classes! Owl bus is referencing the specific type of rail replacement bus service SEPTA uses to replace its heavy rail lines overnight (BSO and MFO), whereas the OWL Link was a microtransit pilot using on-demand minibus. Kinda confusing!

A few years ago when I got my senior Septa card, I said that since I could ride everything for free now, I would still be riding Septa if I didn't have to go to work. Not really, but I would have been tempted. My vote is that to ride the whole trolley line, you have to start at 13th St. Those dots on the windows! They're hard enough to see through in the daytime, but at night in the rain, I can't see out at all. Whoever invented them must not have been a bus rider. Finally, the roof hatch: one time I was riding a Washington, DC, Metrobus to work in the winter, and I noticed snowflakes falling inside the bus! The roof hatch was open in a snowstorm. A tall guy tried to close the hatch, but he couldn't budge it.
@stanislavkostarnov2157

it's an emergency thing, the system that opens and closes the hatch (used for other things in non-emergency) is hydraulic power, opening automatically at loss of pressure... one of the link hoses probably unplugged due to icing.

Great video as always! Honestly in the grand scheme of things, there might be far crazier things you've done, but this was just as fun to watch! (Although 12 hours of straight riding isn't nothing!) IMO: It doesn't count as a full trolley ride until 13th - It is unarguably part of the route and is publicly usable by passengers - Even if nobody actually does it Now try doing this challenge in Boston... (No 24/7 service, but with some really good planning and luck, a 30 minute rule might make the challenge barely possible due to the 171, Massport shuttles and early trips...)

Where my grandparents lived in a "small" town in Japan they had limited overnight busses (think it came twice per night around 3 AM, there was a stop in front of their home & it woke me up the first few nights of my visit as I was not used to round the clock service)

@@damiancooper3063 I know what made you ask 😂. I took that bus recently just for the heck of it while in south Philly. That route had me worried. I felt lost, and I'm a lifelong Philly native lol. The route it took didn't make sense to me at first because I thought the ride from Broad and Oregon to 69th street terminal was finna be simple. Silly me

{coughs} If you use a keyboard it is no longer a capella (and it is A Capella, not Acapella {uncoughs} You both can sing, I must say. Not bad, Not bad at all. 4:05 I had NO idea they used cobblestone in the US, it seems so ...European. Fun fact, the Dutch/Flemish name for cobblestones in Kinderkopjes, which translates to Childrens Heads... no joke. 7:03 WHY IS SHE SHOUTING, IS SHE USING A BULLHORN OR SOMETHING....HOLY CRAPERONI 7:28 heard this several times in your videos now... Foamer is another word for "fanboi" I assume? A question you might be able to answer. I am saving up to visit your country however I do not have a drivers license (really not needed in the Netherlands). Is it possible to go across the US using only public transport or are certain states basically unreachable by that mode of transport (planes excluded) Sorry if I ask/comment so much with questions that might seem trivial under your videos but I am a huge cycle and Public Transport fan (a foamer I guess lol) and many of these things in your video are so weird to a Dutchman like me. Also currently kind of bingewatching your videos as I only recently discovered your channel, hence why you see me commenting so much today lol.

Amtrak has several different routes that crisscross the country, and the only states they don't serve in the continental US are Wyoming and South Dakota; there are also bus companies that fill in any gaps. So it's possible to get to any major city by ground-based public transit, even if it might be a pain sometimes! If you're planning a trip to a bunch of different cities and you want to stay on the ground, you might want to check out the Amtrak USA Rail Pass - $500 for any ten trips on the system.

they didn’t really go through any of the whole “badlands” area, and it’s definitely safer for them traveling w a buddy rather than alone. philly’s not nearly as bad as everyone thinks, crime is concentrated and mostly amongst people who know each other

@@MilesinTransit Ima tell u......I myself had FUN guessin which routes u guys were gonna take from different locations. However.....if y'all had taken da 65 from 69th St to Cardinal & City Av or 56th & Market St y'all woulda had fun on da G bus. That woulda took y'all to Broad & Oregon for da 7, 68 or da sub. My nite owl SEPTA trips had me on da 15, 73, R, 33, MFL, G, 13 (trolley), Broad Street Subway (da suuuuub) & 60, dependin if I'm goin counter clockwise or clockwise around da city. U guys basically zig zagged thru da city on different lines. My hairs stood on end when y'all were around 52nd St...61st & Baltimore and around Angora (58th St). Be very careful nxt time y'all in those areas
