Correction - New Haven is the THIRD largest city in CT, with Stamford coming in at number 2. So Caleb still didn't do his research! For the record, New Haven was the second-largest according to the 2010 census, but Stamford saw higher growth in the intervening years, and it shot up to second place in the 2020.

There's carpet on the ceiling of a motorcoach because well....WHY NOT? I mean the carpet you showed at 11:39 looks pretty cool too, so it adds to the ambience. The arch and colonnade you saw at 4:57 for the Manhattan Bridge are made of Hallowell granite from Maine. They are decorated with two groups of allegorical sculptures by Carl Augustus Heber and a frieze called "Buffalo Hunt" by Charles Cary Rumsey. The design of the arch and colonnade signify the fact that the Manhattan Bridge becomes Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn, and Flatbush Ave goes to the Atlantic, thus it's meant to be a gateway to the ocean! The arch was based on Paris's Porte Saint-Denis. It is one of the city's three remaining triumphal arches, the others being the Washington Square Arch and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Arch! The colonnade and plaza on the other hand was modeled after the one surrounding St. Peter's Square in Vatican City.

1- you’re moving to philly? no… 2- word on the megabus stuff. i visited toronto (and montreal) via megabus and my ticket from pittsburgh to toronto was less than a zone two fare on PAT! it was nice to visit my fam in akron too instead of using greyhound. i’m sad it didn’t stick around.

I rode it from PGH to Ann Arbor -- a direct route to visit my friend at U of M. After they eliminated the route, I had to take Amtrak from Ann Arbor to Detroit, which was late. Then the Detroit City bus passed me because it was stuffed full, so I missed my connecting bus. So then I had to buy a new ticket and take Greyhound to Cleveland. Then wait 5 hours at CLE, which turned into 8 hours because it's Greyhound and the bus broke down before we could board, and eventually I got on the bus back to Pittsburgh.

It's amazing what you do for Kalkidan. I love her. She is the Suzzanne to your Jeb. My favorite Ethiopian restaurant is in MT. Vernon Baltimore. It is called Tabor Ethiopian restaurant. Take the Capitol Limited to DC. Then take the MARC Camden line to Camden. Take the Light rail link to Lexington Market and the rest is 4-minute walk. Red lentil sambusa there is 20/10. I feel like Ethiopian food is very underrated. Also, in New Haven visit Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant.

I'm 100% pro nationalized rail BUT for coaches I think some free-market competition in a busy region or on popular routes can definitely work really well. Considering you have some supervision and not a race to the price bottom at the expense of safety. Would definitely enjoy a video on that! Using a small store as waiting room/kiosk/information/ticket sales point is a great idea. Your girlfriend was very excited haha. Keep it up!

Actually it's basically the same. Apart from the fact that it's easier and cheaper to do into the bus transit business trains can, and do in some parts of the world, work the same. Buses use roads that are, in fact, rationalized (maybe not so much on a federal level bus are publicly owned) and railways should also be rationalized (this time on a federal level IMO) but lime with buses, and air travel, you can have multiple private operators, just like we have and most of Europe. Like airlines they buy slots on the national railways and operate under strict regulation (especially safety). That said, private operators are i it for profit so they will only do popular well used routs so there is a need to ensure subsidiesed service to small non profitable places, like done with air and bus travel. Just keep local transport under full public control.

The stop request button is unnecessary on Megabus as far as I know. However, those models of bus are often used for commuter services, where they are used. The only ceiling- mounted stop button I've personally used is on Delware's DART.

I enjoyed the comparison of the buses, they have much stricter standards in the UK, though you will see Megabus and Flixbus battling it out, as it were. Changing from one bus or train to another can have hazards in that there can be lateness and missed connections. As ever it is always a pleasure to see your video presentations and it was a great pleasure to see the smile on your girlfriend's face! Marvellous.

I find it fascinating how the busses got progressively worse throughout the trip. That Wanda bus was... pretty shockingly awful. On the other hand, I found the old CRT monitors on the OurBus and Wanda to be fascinating; I'm kinda surprised there's still busses in regular service with those! I absolutely dig the idea of a video about Chinatown busses and their history. This is pretty much my first time learning about them, so a deeper dive would be much appreciated at some point! Also, incredibly minor, galactically insignificant fun fact: I thought the Love's truck stop in Mifflinville that you stopped at on the MegaBus looked and sounded vaguely familiar. Turns out I stopped there for gas on a road trip with some friends to Knoebels over the summer! Again, very minor little thing, I just found it mildly amusing to see that same gas station again 3 months after I was there.

There seems to be a lot more competition in the US northeast bus market then here in Germany. We’ve only had competition in the intercity bus market for about 10 years, but it only took a couple years for all of the companies to either go bankrupt or be bought by Flixbus. I don’t think there is any serious competition to them right now. BlaBlaCar had a short run in 2019 but pulled out when the pandemic hit, I think they have since resumed operations, but I’m not sure as I don’t use the busses. I tried the long distance bus thing once when it was new and I could get a trip through the entire country for like 5€. Well, the bus took 11h instead of the planned 9, while the ICE would have made the same journey in 6. The toilet didn’t really work, the WiFi didn’t either (to be fair, the trains didn’t even have WiFi back then) and legroom felt closer to Ryanair then a nice intercity service. And since it’s a bus you can’t really get up and walk a few steps, if you want to stretch. Some of the stops were also in quite scetchy areas. I decided that day I don’t care how cheap the bus is, I’m taking the train. It’s still an important service as they are often cheaper then DB trains, but I don’t see them getting any major market share, because they are just too slow and prone to be stuck in traffic jams, even if our trains currently don’t have the best reputation for punctuality they’ll still beat a bus.

Dude, this was an awesome video! Thanks! I have ridden a few different bus companies. I would agree that MegaBus is far superior to most. I have never ridden a Chinatown bus but I have wondered what they are like. Thanks for biting that bullet for me! My favorite bus company ever is Baron's Bus. They operate mostly in Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia. Sadly, the only PA stop is Erie, although they used to have a call-ahead stop in Meadville. If you haven't ridden them, you need to!

Carpet on the walls and ceilings of vehicles is oh, so 70s (cue Cheap Trick). I'm not good at doing the math in my head, so how much did the buses cost total, and how does that compare to taking Amtrak all the way from Pittsburgh to Boston on the cheapest available coach fare (at least that is possible to do at decent hours, said the Ohioan)? I'm probably going to be shocked, since Congress has ruined taking Amtrak for anyone who is economically challenged. I don't think they have student fares anymore, do they?
