I Took My Transalp 750 on Singletrack! Dunlop Trailmax Raid Mud Test

Dunlop was kind enough to send me a set of their new Trailmax Raid ADV bike tires...so of course I immediately decided to test them in a place they were pretty much in no way designed to go: some local muddy singletrack trails.
Taking my Honda Transalp 750 on singletrack trails is maybe not the smartest thing I've ever done, but I've never let that stand in the way of a good motorcycle test video.
Admittedly, the Trailmax Raid tires are not designed for super deep mud like this...and they did fill up with sticky clay pretty quickly on the singletrack trail, but they did amazingly well on the loose gravel and mixed gravel/mud surfaces I rode on this ADV tire test. Neither these tires nor the 2024 Honda Transalp XL750 were designed for these types of conditions, but both did pretty dang well under the circumstances.
My initial Dunlop Trailmax Raid review is pretty positive in terms of on-road performance and mixed surface off road prowess. The only real negative points so far are deep sticky mud performance and sand traction.

It’s gunna behave differently on different bikes tho so I can only speak on its performance on the 250. I’m also one of those folks that aren’t bothered by noisy tires….at all! However these are considerably less noisy campared to the Enduro IT that I’ve run previously.

But I did buy a 300 cc scooter that I'm going to ride across the country from coast to coast in the spring. Then I'll sell that and get an XT250 for more dual sport goodness in my neck of the woods. I'm wanting this bike more and more each day. It would do anything I need it to do. Just like in this video, tires are the key to doing any serious off-road riding and I am not willing to sacrifice the on-road performance and longevity for any real off-road riding. Most I really do is a back road anyway especially with a bike this size. Any hard off-road stuff I will be on a bike dedicated to that type of riding. I think I would probably pony up for a cruise control unit for it for longer riding. I'm like you in that I didn't think I was going to like this bike, but I've definitely changed my mind.

Foolish mortal! 🤣🤣 Looks like she handled it pretty well. I took my Tiger 800 XC on some real off-road trails for the first time last year. She also did very well considering her top-heavy girth... at least until I got crossed up in a narrow rutted 4-wheeler trail and augered in spectacularly, damn near pinning me under her on my left side and breaking about $500 worth of bodywork. 😭 Lessons learned: I'm very happy I was riding with a couple of other guys who helped me pick her up, and big girls stay on improved road surfaces.. LOL ( I've got a big-bored '09 KLX331S for singletrack work 😁) I love my Tiger ('14, paid for!), but your Transalp content is giving me wondering eye syndrome!!

I’ve enjoyed your videos while being down ill. I have a xr650L that is languishing in the garage. The transalp reviews are great. I’m sure it takes a lot of time. I would recommend the Transalp, due to its lower height and the fact that it's capable enough off road to keep you learning for a while. The Tuareg is a much more capable bike off road, but I doubt you'll notice the difference all that much as a beginner. Also because Honda. Dealership, parts and user support will be much greater, and we can reasonably expect reliability to be the usual Honda. This is the reason I chose a T7 over the Tuareg, even though the Aprilia is a superior off road bike (T7 was also cheaper, I didn't want/need the electronics).

@@davidehrmann6929 you mentioned being new to adventure riding, so I presume you're pretty unaccustomed to off road riding? In that case, lower will make things easier, no matter how comfortable you are on a tall bike. It's about planting that foot on the ground once you've lost your balance on a rutted trail. These bikes are heavy, once they tip a bit (and they will tip far if you can't find the ground early), you need to turn into the Hulk to get them back upright. Lower seat helps in that regards, that's why I was suggesting the Transalp. That being said, I was also new to adventure riding and my first bike for that was a T7, at only 5'10. I paid the price multiple times for that choice, though! :) I like the ground clearance, so that's ok with me, maybe it would be for you as well. Either choice is great, in my opinion, with a slight advantage to the Transalp for the previously stated reasons.

Thanks for the tired review (pun intended)…. For my rides here in interior Alaska I use the very aggressive Dunlop 10/90 D606 front and rear on my DRZ and they are great off the road, or on dirt roads, but loud and a little twitchy on pavement. Not bad in snow either but horrible on ice, though I have considered putting studs on a set to see if that would help for late fall and early spring here in interior Alaska. As we are always trying to expand our riding season here.

You said "way too heavy, way too wide ADV bike on this trail". Fun can be had on any bike. Bigger, heavier bikes require more work if you have the talent (i don't). Tires and mods help, but it is still big and heavy to maneuver. It gets really heavy if it falls on you, or if you have to keep picking it up. Just refer to Trav's heat exhaustion (and soon after leg injury) videos to see it in play.

No two ways about it, mud and 500pound adv bikes present obvious challenges. If a rider is comfortable being uncomfortable (the always sliding around feeling), and if a rider maintains momentum, most situations are doable. Does not matter much if your on a Pan America, 890R, T7, Transalp ect ect, doesn't matter if you have the best tires on earth-if your on a 500pound bike, on mud, it's a different animal than a dual sport. Just be thankful your mud is still thawed. I got myself into a bad situation yesterday. Our muddy spots in the mountains have frozen over during the last month. That's all fine and dandy until we got an unseasonably warm day yesterday (60f), the base of the mud was still frozen, but the top 1/4 had thawed. Imagine snotty mud on top a sheet of ice. Then imagine going down in a vally on single track, and unable to get enough traction to get back up the hill, and not enough room to get a run at it. No cell coverage. Middle of nowhere. Had to take my hoodie off from under my riding jacket. I tied the sleeves together, and made it into a carrying sack, went down to the creek, scooped up 13loads of gravel and sand from the creek, and layed the gravel and sand down as a a traction aid. It worked! I could have had the very best mud tires, the "most capable" bike (which is highly subjective) and it wouldn't have mattered much at all, if any. I don't even think a dual sport would have been much of an advantage, beside being light and easy to maneuver. Those two positive attributes make it easier to handle, but do not provide any more/or less traction in that specific situation.

Im still on the fence about the trailmax raid tires. For the price i prefer longevity and traction noise doesn't bother me.. (never notice it) with ear plugs in. I have never seen a review yet that say how many miles they get out of the trailmax raid tires just how good or bad they are

I'm enjoying the Trailmax Missions so far, which seem to have barely worn after 10,000 kms on my CB500X. They also aren't good on muddy tracks, but I rarely ride those anyways.

While I really wanted a new Transalp but this crazy ABS - BS has steered me away from buying one, sad really but I’m not going to be controlled or lack being controlled in not being able to turn the f-ing ABS completely off. I’m pissed, I guess I’ll be putting my springtime money elsewhere 😢

Hello. i have a Transalp. You can shut ABS rear / front and Tc by removing the abs fuse for your offroad session. you can also install a kill switch on this fuse circuit and on / off ABS + TC on the fly motor running, no problem.

Thanks for the tire review but you need to work on the cameras tbh. The focus, clarity and sound are poor. Careful with your positioning in light. During the final comments your face was blurred and the sun was over you shoulder. Best find an open spot, set the camera up with a helmet off bit. Sorry but I ffwd bits of this. Good content otherwise. Thanks Ben. 103K'er!! Awesome

I wonder if you could splice the front abs wire and mount a on/off switch on your handlebars. Tricking the bike into thinking the sensor is not working to fully disable it. Seen this done on T7’s simply to not have to stop and disable ABS each time. Not sure how it would effect the bikes computer system?? Disclaimer: try at own risk 😂

I've been a subscriber since your channel was very small. I'm happy that you've finally hit 100k subscribers, but the new Honda Transalp is a poor excuse for an adventure motorcycle. Yamaha is the only company that seems to be selling a reliable, affordable, relatively lightweight, simple, fast, and capable adventure bike. As someone who grew up riding Honda dirt bikes, it's a damn shame what the Honda brand has turned into. Mr. Honda was a huge racing enthusiast, and his success was always pushing the automotive industry to improve just to keep up. Honda, like many companies, has gone soft and taken the safe and boring path. Good luck to you. Unsubscribed.
