For slant board squats, You can also use a zercher squat with an ezcurl bar … i hold better than front squat, it’s more aggressive on your lower trunk (posterior chain) and it hits the vastus medialis more directly.

good ingenuity with the band. I do similar tib raises, where I put a loop band through under-door anchor, then sit on my rear, put my feet up through the loops, and it gives a tremendous burn after 15 or so reps. I'm also working on nordics, using a trx extension strap with knot in it, under the door.

I wasn’t gonna say it, but yes.. Ben is big on Nordic raises, tib raises, hamstring & calf strength and flexibility. Ben isn’t a proponent of real heavy weights especially on a person with already compromised knees. Repetition or weight, of course without pain! Even the sled drag , can be done with heavy weights but not until your pain free at a lighter weight. Ben is progressive in his training format.

@monkeyb1820
@monkeyb1820 Жыл бұрын
either is ok. Ben has explained too that rounding the back is not inherently bad, it just uses all of those muscles slightly differently. The jefferson curl is done with a deliberately curled back. Ben is so flexible that he probably gets the most stretch out of doing 'good mornings' with flat back, but regular people will need to curve the back a bit.

Is it weird that I've literally never had knee pain until I started doing kneesovertoes?
@monkeyb1820
@monkeyb1820 Жыл бұрын
from which part? everyone should start the atg squats 'gently'. And I think the slantboard squats can be irritating. I'd start those with low reps, even just sets of 5. Spend 2-3 weeks building up the knees gently. I don't have a slantboard, but the other stuff hasn't aggravated my knees. And I have done some poliquin step-downs on some stairs in our house, with no lasting issues.
@gamerthug5oh
@gamerthug5oh Жыл бұрын
@Monkey B Its above the knee. I feel like I've been doing it pretty gently. Have never done a split squat set more than 5 reps. Have started out using stairs to make it easier. Idk what I'm doing wrong haha. Literally never had issues with my knees until I've started doing this. Pretty frustrated.
@monkeyb1820
@monkeyb1820 Жыл бұрын
@@gamerthug5oh Most people have a tendency to jump into it all too vigorously. And if someone doesn't have knee problems, probably little more than backward sled is really needed. For me, all of 'step' and squat type things feel better if my muscles are warmed up first (could be from rowing, sled push/pulls, etc.).

The way I think of it, the tibialis suffers from the same issues that hamstrings suffer from, but in reverse. The big issues with hamstrings are these. 1. the hamstring lengthens or shortens from 2 different joints. If you bend down at the back, you tighten your hamstrings... and if you bend your knee, your hamstring tightens. 2. It's a facilitating muscle. Your hamstring isn't directly targeted in any major lift. You have to isolate it, which involves a range of motion that is not generally under significant load through calisthenics. So as a result, if you sit a lot, your hamstring tightens from both directions, causes lower back pain and/or knee pain. So as far as muscles it's important to stretch and maintain mobility, hamstrings top most people's list. Well, the tibialis is exactly that in reverse. The big issues with tibialis are these. 1. The tibialis lengthens or shortens from 2 different joints. If you bend your knee, you bend your knees or point your toes, you lengthen... perhaps even slacken your tibealis, and when you lift your toes and straighten your knee, your tibealis is shortened quite a bit. 2. It's a facilitating muscle. Your tibialis isn't directly targeted in any major lift. You must isolate it whichinvolves a range of motion that's generally not under significant load through calisthenics. The opposite problem requires an opposite approach. If your hamstring is your highest stretching priority for proper mobility, then surely, your tibealis is the highest strengthening priority for proper mobility. BUT... I think guys are going about it all wrong. You'll notice that hamstrings are hard to isolate, and that isolating them is hard on the knees. That's why you go low weight, high rep. You want to work your muscle like it's used to working, and you don't want to create joint issues. Well, with the tibealis, it's even harder to isolate the muscle. You can do tibealis raises, but you are lifting from the heel, not the toe (like the monkey raises or whatever he called them.) What you SHOULD be doing... is just getting an insane pump in your tibealis. Let your body know you intend to use it. Myself, I'll be sitting here and give them a quick blast. Just focus on the correct ankle position and raise my tibealis as hard as I can with no load about 50 times, then keep my tibealis engaged as hard as I can for 30 seconds to a minute, and then 50 more really focused raises going for max contraction each time. (Not dissimilar btw to the most famous exercise you can do for your netherregions [male of female] Keep that in mind any time you are exercising a muscle that doesn't do much load-bearing exercise). The reason this is the way to go... the tibealis' is utilized generally as a stabilizing muscle. Absorbs shock, maintains the correct ankle position, prevents ankle rolls, etc... It's not there to lift cars. It's there to stabilize your ankle and knee.
