The thing is, they treat foreigners very differently. In most of china, foreigners are seen as fragile. Especially in the world of chinese kung fu, where the philosophy of training is basically to break yourself as much as possible and get stronger, and if you break you're weak (not all schools, just a very generalised view, because it can differ from person to person). So the training is the same, but they will not push you that hard, and if they do "push" you. It's just a bit of shouting and maybe they'll get a little stick. You have to remember for schools, especially the shaolin temple. Foreigners are just a bag of money. They do not want to break their valued customers who spend quite a bit of money to go there. And I know what you're thinking, "Buddhist monks and a material thing like money, you're chatting shit". It's stupid I know, but the shaolin temple is a business with a lot politics attached to the temple (not that type of politics, temple specific politics). Shaolin kung fu is a very profitable business. But please don't let these things make you think that the temple is a terrible place. There are people who are devoted to Buddhist ways and definitely warrior monks who love kung fu with more then their heart. But at the end of the day, the temple is full of people with problems, like every place in the world. Tbh, writing this, I feel like it might be taken in a controversial way. I love kung fu with all my heart, and it changed my life for the better. So none of this is done with ill intent, but out of love for shaolin kung fu.
