That would be amazing if you could create damaged extrensions from healthy ones. Mechanical damage from brushing, chemical damage from bleaching, or uv damage etc. The top damage variations, and you just separate them and testing which damage repair threatment treats better those tipes of damages. That would be an extraordinary experiment!

This is fascinating ! It would be great if you could test the strength of hair instead of the cuticle because this is what bond repair treatments are supposed to improve. Like Virtue, some cationic surfactants, things like that. I'm so excited ! Thank you so much for your hard work

Love your mindset in wanting to understand hair at a scientific level!! Even without cuticle, highly damaged hair probably still benefits from bond repair to prevent breakage, and possibly to have better structure to hold more shape in a style, which looks much better. Even though your samples don't look like gorgeous shiny hair, they DO look better than before. I recently treated my hair with K18 because of you. I had purchased it awhile ago, but didn't see or feel much improvement after 1-2 uses, and REALLY couldn't go without conditioner as its directions state. But after watching your video, I applied it for 4 minutes, then added a bit of water, then used a Moroccanoil mask (rec'd by Blowout Professor), rinsed and conditioned, then used Living Proof Bond Repair for 10 minutes, then applied Pureology Color Fanatic leave-in, then a styler with heat protectant (Color Wow Xtra Large), then used a blow-dry brush to style. It's a freaking lot of products, but I did see a HUGE improvment in my hair's health & appearance after about the 5th use of the K18 + Living Proof bond repair. (Also, I saw much better results w/ K18 after skipping the oil pre-shampoo, and washing the mids and ends a bit.) I would never have tried all the steps if I hadn't learned that strategy from you. Have you ever heard of science-y hair blog? science-yhairblog.blogspot.com/ Wendy is a scientist with curly hair who wanted to understand hair care scientifically. She has a lot of hair-under-the-microscope photos on her blog. It's very cool to see, for example, which oils protect the hair most from swelling during water exposure. One last random tip - if you use K18, when you can't pump any more out, break off the top of the pump. I got my husband to do it for me, and got 2 more uses out of the bottle.

@@e.4124 I have been using Olaplex conditioner, because I already had it before all this recent research. After I finish it, I plan to try Blowout Professor's rec for my medium hair type, which is Redken Volume Injection. Thanks to Abbey, I tried the K18 AND a mask AND a conditioner AND Living Proof Triple bond repair AND a leave-in conditioner AND a styler, which I would never have thought to use all on the same wash day, but it obviously works for her hair lol! I have used Olaplex conditioner for a long time, and by itself, it did not prevent me from having dull, frizzy, shapeless hair. And at times I thought it was too heavy and building up on my hair, yet my hair seemed dry. Well, as soon as I used the Redken Volume Injection shampoo, it was like a miracle! Getting my hair truly clean made a huge difference. All these %^&* "sulfate-free" shampoos were not cleaning my hair.

Thank you SO much for going above and beyond to answer our questions- It's actually incredible how far you've gone for this. You seriously need for recognition! 👏 and the non-biased videos are just chefs kiss One last question I have though: Since K18's pro mist is a high pH to raise the cuticle for the mask, would it be logical to use a high pH soap like dr. Bronners (pH of 9)? Would it do damage long term like how using high pH hair products alone does? Last note - I watched some of your videos and I wasn't sure because I have curly hair, but you just earned yourself a subscriber! 😊 Can't wait to see the results! I love this idea! As someone who is a cosmetic chemist and is trained on how to correctly assess hair, I just want to offer advice. Make sure that the shampoo you are using to wash the hair is a very basic formula. We often use a solution of SLES to cleanse the hair that doesn’t have any silicones or any other additional hair conditioning ingredients to ensure that the changes you are seeing is only from the product and not anything else. I thought the Revlon One-Step round brush would be the answer, but I feel that it really damaged my hair from the tension and by how hot the central core of the brush got. So, the AirStraight has been the perfect answer. (Perfect with the exception of the price 😢) I don't feel any tugging on my hair and I'm actually able to dry my hair using the middle heat setting of 230°. I have also seen improvement using K18. I am hoping that by using both, I can eventually get my hair back to a healthy state. Thank you for all your work and thank you to the individuals helping with your experiment. My partner is an analytical chemist he suggested that an advanced high powered MRI would be able to measure the uptake of products from cuticle to core and the effect on the hair.

@@AbbeyYungMy partner also advised SEM-EDX (X-ray back scattering). Your chemist friend will likely know if either of the 2 techniques I mentioned in my 2 comments will be of assistance. Please note I am typing with my partner spelling out the science bits 😂. All the best and good luck!

Hi Abbey, cool stuff! I am just wondering why you are imaging the cuticle and not imaging cross sections of the hair? Can you not see damage via SEM that way? Why would you predict that bond builders modify the cuticle if that's not the place they target? Thanks!

Thank you for your perseverance on this. I am definitely waiting for this but this kind of explains why my hair keeps being so brittle in the end despite every bond repair, only lutte heat etc etc… (and no bleach) cuticules cannot grow back !

Hey Abby! What is your hair color? You may bave answered this already but I’m looking for the best color of blonde for my skin tone that isn’t as damaging as platinum. It depend on skin tone. Do you have neutral undertone?
