I wish Hahnemuhle would put the information that you read us about the papers on their website! They really make it hard to know what paper they recommend for what. Thank you so much for including this in the video. (I believe it was your first Hahnemuhle Selection pad video that led me to find your channel!) One thing they don't make 100% clear about Turner is it's not surface sized ("material sized" means it's only internally sized). You didn't do any wet on wet in the paintings, and I do think that's where you see the difference between cotton and cellulose a lot more. In my tests of many different brands of cotton papers, Hahnemuhle and Lanaquarelle (which is my favorite paper, and it's now owned by Hahnemuhle) have a beautiful perfectly even spread wet on wet, compared to the others. I agree that the big difference between cellulose and cotton, especially our classic American cellulose paper Strathmore which has very hard surface sizing, the paint does not "communicate" well with the paper. Great way of putting it.

Glad you enjoyed! They do say when a paper has surface sizing and Turner's info does not mention it, so I assume it's not.

Excellent demonstration and commentary. Subscribed! I have two of those pads which I haven't opened yet (time and health reasons), and of course I do the stupid thing and look at this video instead of trying them first myself IRL 🐌😬 I'm going to concentrate first on wet-on-wet with the cold-pressed ones.

I bought a block of expressions a long time ago and it sat on a shelf. Recently though I bought a Schmincke supergranulating dot card and decided to swatch them on both the card and a block of Winsor and Newton professional rough. I assumed the Winsor and Newton would be “better”. Nope, the dot card was so much better! The colour separation was just so lovely. I contacted the company to find out what this mystery paper was and guess what? Hahnemuhle expressions. I live in Canada where this paper is not generally sold, but managed to find a couple of blocks on amazon, and I also found a store in the UK that ships that was offering a very reasonable price. It’s called “the Perfect Paper Company”. Shipping was expensive, but the price per block made up for it.

Another great video. I bought this selection pack after you recommended it in a previous episode. I am new to watercolour so a selection pad is brilliant for allowing me to experiment without spending a fortune. I cut a strip off each sheet to try out on, leaving a square for later painting. It was good to find instant dislikes and also see that sometimes the painting joy experience doesn’t always match the finished item - a couple of times I found the painting trickier but then loved how the paint and paper reacted together in the end. I did enjoy watching you test them all.

Thanks for decoding Hahnemuhle for us! All the names drive me mad usually because they give no indication of what the product actually is! But I have loved the papers I have used, mostly samples, but I have a cellulose one I really like that seems to have no name, it works really well for me. But buying more there is always that dilemma over choice! Thanks for all the useful info, but I guess at the end of the day it’s what our own contact with paper and brush does for each of us, and that is really individual. Am just off to look at some of your other links as I think they will be useful. Many thanks, I always enjoy your take on things so much.

I saw this and am so tempted to order, but we can't get most of these papers in the US at a reasonable price. It's odd that it's available in a US store (Wet Paint). There is also now a smaller size of the same pad that's a bit cheaper. There's also a new Hahnemuhle 100% cotton sketchbook, it's also available at Wet Paint on sale this month, and will come to other US retailers soon! I wrote Hahnemuhle to ask a question last year, and they very kindly sent me some samples, so I tried the Agave and the Bamboo. I liked the Bamboo better, and got a spiral notebook, but when I painted on it for the first time yesterday I was not thrilled. I've discovered recently that sometimes my paper tests have been a bit deceiving, and it's quite different to actually paint on the paper! For this reason, I've been wanting to do some testing by actually doing a painting on each paper, the same way you demonstrated in the lovely montage!

@@iritlandgraf I'm not sure, but I think it might have to do with what they choose to "distribute" in the US. Here, it's easy to get The Collection, and then the watercolor sketchbooks, which are aimed at urban sketchers. There are also some other types of papers for drawing, printing, etc that they sell here in the US. I am hoping they will choose to bring their wonderful cellulose options to the US eventually! Because I think you're right, they do a really good job of it.

So, your mystery paper is Cornwall? I was surprised how much I liked Agave, after my not so great first impression. I find it lovely for a la prima, or painting in one go. It shows granulation and likes to bloom. The one I call the `nameless` one is (I think) your #5 reviewed here, and the information that I got is that it has some % of cotton in it. I`d be so curious to check if that is the case, though. Turner I liked, but it`s a very soft paper. In my opinion, Collection is the most similar to Arches. That was my impression, but I don`t have any more Arches to compare to again. In any case, I love the Collection paper. And now I wanna try bigger sheet of Cornwall. On the side note, I love your test paintings & I would frame each and every one!

I just tried the bamboo paper and I kind of liked it. It was less than half the price of Arches. I'm looking for a (not cellulose) cold pressed, not super exspensive and not so much tooth because I like to use colored pencils etc on my painting. What did you think was the difference between agave and bamboo paper? I found a Daler Rowney cellulose paper that was ok for training and sometimes for real paintings. It comes in jumbo pack of 50. Any suggestions?
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 2 жыл бұрын
Go with what you like Sara, I haven't tried that Daler Rowney paper so can't say anything about it. I didn't like the bamboo paper at all, but the agave was not bad. If you don't use cellulose you don't have a ton of options, either cotton bamboo or now, agave... so I guess it's just searching for a good deal on one of those. Between the cold pressed cotton papers out there I don't have clear favorites. I really like Turner but it's actually not so pencil friendly, so can't recommend it to you. Try ordering paper samples from online shops such as Jackson's and see what you like :)

@@iritlandgraf I'm painting on Lanaquerelle cotton cold pressed right now, and I think I'm going crazy. I doesn't handle water at all as I want it to do. The bamboo paper was better i my opinion. The search for the perfect paper continues....

@@sarabengtsson5353 Lanaquarelle is my favorite and I have also tried the bamboo and agave. I think the bamboo is much better for wet on wet and the agave... well, it is unsized and it paints like it. What do you not like about the Lana; what do you want the paper to do instead?

@@jennw6809 I'm used to Arches and Fabriano. The problem I had with Lana was that I couldn't get soft edges when painting wet on dry. I painted a portrait in a way that I have painted several times before on other papers with good result, but not on Lana. I guess I have to use Lana for other types of paintings.
