Recently, I've been in iPhone hell. I constantly check KZfaq, Twitter, and Instagram. This lack of focus has leaked into my life. I eat more snacks; I stay up later playing video games and complaining. These are not good qualities. My thoughts whirlpool around the most recent drama on Twitter or a news story, and inevitably, I feel worse. I needed something to fix it.

Who am I:
My name is Zach. I’m a fourth-year medical student in Philadelphia. I make videos about medical school, studying, and growth. I love trying new things and often mess up. However, every time I screw up I usually learn something. Whatever I learn I post it either on KZfaq or on my website 🌐 (zhighley.com/).
I write a weekly newsletter 💌 (zhighley.com/newsletter/) linking the best things I read, watched, and listened to that week. Join the 4,000+ that read it every Sunday morning.

Zach! I've been watching you and your journey for a while now. I first found you through your amazing Anki tutorial videos. And I just wanted to say that I love seeing the transition and development of you as a person, medical professional, and KZfaqr. I also love seeing the direction that this channel is going. You're not boxed into just "medicine". I think this channel is a reflection of the whole idea that you are more than just a "medical student/resident". At this point, I'm so curious to see what other topics you are going to make videos on. I feel like at this point, you can just do whatever you find the most appealing and invigorating. Cheers mate!

I have regularly practiced many stoic principles for some time tho to expect, ‘prepare’, for the worst is terrible advice. We experience what we look for.. if we expect only the worst -in people, situations, etc-we’re sure to find it.

Quit caffeine for 30 days and then leave 3 days in between when you drink it. This way, the tolerance will never build up and the ritual itself will be more pleasing.

Imagining your family dying is fine, but you can think of a better example. It's about facing your worse fears. You're a medical student/Doctor, so you should imagine failing an important exam or making a mistake, which kills a patient. You then prepare for those situations by studying/working on your weaknessee etc

Feels like the inevitable was skipped - yes junior devs will still exist and their role will evolve… but there will be far less of them. If a 2 person ‘team’ can with the help of AI do the work done by 3 people now then someone has just lost their job or never had a post to lose in the first place.

As a Muslim, I am surprised to find that there are similarities between the teaching and practices in Islam and stoicism! For instance, we fast so we can control our impulses and be more aware of our blessings such as food and water in addition to the health benefits that come with fasting. What many people dont know though is that while fasting, we dont just refrain from eating and drinking, but we also try to “fast” from harmful language, behavior, and mindsets! Not complaining and reminding yourself/preparing yourself for the worst is also another thing we do since as you mentioned if you and your family end up living the next day despite preparing for the idea of death, it makes you extremely grateful and hopeful. The biggest difference though is that we are grateful to Allah (God) for choosing to have these things happen and grateful to Him answering our prayers and granting such things and more. What’s even more relieving is that even if things do end up taking a different course or even an undesirable course, we trust that He chose it for us for a REASON and that He knows what’s best because He is the creator and the All-Knowing. Waking up early is also another thing we are advised to do as we have prayers that are timed and divided throughout the day and the first prayer called “Fajir” is basically at around 3 to 5 AM depending on your region. Even our prayers can be considered as meditations as we are advised to focus solely on our sayings and movements for around 5 to 7 min five times a day. I wanted to share this as I found it super interesting to see the possible similarities! :)
