I get some hand me downs from a friend, and the rest I thrift! Have found so many good quality kid items at the thrift stores. Saves a lot of money and they grow out of them within a year anyways. And I agree to keep the closet minimal! Wash once a week and done

Most of my 2 (almost 3) year old clothes are hand me downs from his older cousin. I go through the clothes and choose the items I like best and then the leftovers plus my sons clothes that he’s grown out of go to my cousin for her little boy. I definitely will be narrowing down his clothes though because he has way too many and his drawers a full to the brim.

I agree with letting kids choose their clothes, even when purchasing them! Mom of 7 here ages 34-15 and implemented a minimal wardrobe for my last 5 since they were young. They still carry that mentality today and their older selves. I have a few that have chosen all black for their "uniform". My youngest son likes to wear a blue shirt with blue jeans everyday. They all do their own laundry which makes life simple but shopping is streamlined as well when an item needs replaced 😊 Your capsule wardrobe, Madi, has inspired me to pare down my wardrobe. I've kept the "when I lose weight" clothes for far too long.

I have used The Good & The Beautiful since pre-k and my oldest son is about to start the 2nd grade curriculum. It takes no prep. And I only use their curriculum and the very minimal stuff it comes with (i.e one small wooden box of manipulatives and a few books.) The only extras are extra books to read for fun, but I don’t know if that would even be considered extra as most kids have books. Our kids like to have a game night and I will choose games that have an academic component to them, so that may also be considered extra to some, but not really. In terms of supplies, we have coloring pencils/crayons and pencils. Anything else we get only as it comes up as needed in the curriculum, like in 1st grade he needed a ruler. It really takes very little.

I don't have children but these are great teaching tools for them to not want everything that they see. Years ago, as a face painter, I once met a guy whose two year old daughter was wearing Mary Janes that had cherries in the design. I commented on how cute the shoes were because I had never seen any like them before. He told me that she already had over ninety pairs of shoes. It was so shocking to hear that at her age she was already being taught to become a massive consumer.

I just finished Lessons from Madame Chic, at your suggestion (after watching one of your videos about your 10 item wardrobe). Two days before we left for an 8 day vaca, my nine year old daughter assisted me in bagging up the majority of my wardrobe. I’d estimate that I have roughly 25 pieces but I told myself I would re-evaluate when we got back home from our trip. Even while on vacation, I noticed my mindset changes (not feeling the desire to shop for souvenir clothing/items, etc). I also recognized that I didn’t even wear some of the items I had packed!! Thanks for sharing your ideas & tips!! I can’t wait to learn how to help my kids pair down their clothes too!

I typically have 3-5 tops and 3 bottoms for my kids. It seems to work really well. I’m never going back to mt. Washmore again! Even that smallish amount of clothing still makes a lot of washing when you include bedding, towels, sports kit etc. so the fewer clothes to add to the mix the better! You are right that the wholehearted course is a mix of practical and therapeutic. It was wonderfully therapeutic for me! I need to go further into simplifying our home so I’m going through it all again. ( I do dip in and out continually) the wholehearted course is as helpful and insightful as it was the first time around. I will forever be grateful for you and so glad I invested in it. My whole family is benefiting from it and I believe it will have generational impact too 🙂❤

I have a lot more shirts for my kids because they get dirty and sticky, and HATE being dirty or sticky, so we often change shirts a few times a day. They have less bottoms and have 3 short/tee pajamas, 3 pant/tee pajamas and 3 long sleeve/pants pajamas. Often have two to 4 sweaters or hoodies. One coat, snow pants, boots. A few sandals (they get muddy here) and a pair of rain boots.

6 tops, 5 bottoms, 1 nice occasion dress or outfit, one piece of outer wear (like sweater, hoodie, coat, whatever), 2 pajamas, and a few pairs of shoes each. (Fall and winter=boots and sneakers. Spring and summer=slip-on shoes and sandals.) Five members in our family and besides underthings and some seasonal layers stored in a separate closet, that's our wardrobe. We re-visit our items at the beginning of each season. (Not to include that each family member has bedsheets and blankets, 2 towels, and 2 wash cloths.) When we get dressed, it's so easy to pick something because we have few items of clothing but they're all our favorites! And packing for trips, or even moving, is a breeze. Anything else that my teenagers want, they must buy it themselves, but they're more than happy with their minimalist wardrobes and look forward to once a season upgrading a few things.

I am naturally a minimalistic person, so I would say my kids have capsule wardrobes without trying. That being said, I only have boys, so I think they care a lot less about clothes. The biggest struggle for me was getting over and rid of the things that I thought would look cute but they don't want to wear. They just want to be comfortable. I completely agree, buy reliable brands that you can pass down. Also, sticking to a general colour scheme and switching things out seasonally makes it super easy for them to dress themselves, such a win!

I accidentally discovered a kids capsule wardrobe for our 4 kids by necessity when we moved into a camper for a year. And let me say that even once we moved back into our 3000 sq ft house, I will never go back to a “normal” wardrobe for them. Not drowning in laundry piles everyday has been life changing for my soul and honestly my kids love the simplicity of not having too many options. We find that just 3 to 4 outfits per child really is all they need and want. Even when traveling it works great because they’re able to pack all their clothes themselves and it all fits in their backpack. No crazy backed up laundry piles when we return home is a plus too. It only takes us 2 loads to wash everyone’s clothes once we get home. Which if we really wanted to could be done in one load. I agree investing in high quality clothes has been a game changer. It is a large investment up front at times but even with four kids we’ve found ways to make it work. Sometimes that means only updating one or two items at a time, passing down clothes and occasionally we can even find high quality brands at our local children’s consignment shop. And if that wasn’t enough, we all share one closet so clothes are able to put up right when they’re dried and into each child’s little bins. Loved the video ❤

We live in Georgia, so it’s really hot and humid here in the summer. Each kid has 4 pairs of shorts and four shirts. 8 pieces of underwear and one pair of socks. And a pair of crocs. And that’s it. We find that we don’t need anything more. I do laundry every two days and it works about perfectly. Even if a kid needs to change their outfit during the day we still don’t run out of clothes. Each kid also only has one pair of sheets for their bed and a quilt, and one towel. Which makes washing everyone’s linens in one day really easy. ❤

I reduced my 7 year old son’s wardrobe for summer. He has 9 pairs of shorts, a dozen t-shirts, 3 tanks, 2 polos & 2 bathing suits. I keep panicking that he doesn’t have enough, but he absolutely does! I did the same with my closet because I lost weight & more panic. I can’t believe I need to work through the panic & resist the urge to go shop. I am definitely a victim of our culture. Reducing your wardrobe is eye opening!

I’d love to see a video of what your laundry routine looks like in a week and what you use for natural stain remover. That’s the issue I run into with my daughters clothes. She spills stuff on herself a lot at the age of 4.5 so we’re changing clothes a few times a day and I hesitate to buy more expensive quality pieces for her for that reason. Luckily we do get some good quality hand me downs

We buy cat and Jack from target so after she rips her clothes or gets giant stains on them we can return it for the same price we bought it and buy another outfit with it so we don't spend much. She spends all day outside with the chickens and gets GA clay on everything haha. We buy sustainable and minimal on jackets and longer term items.

I love to hand the clothes down to my other younger children, but once a yr I buy some special pieces on sale from a brand I love, and make sure they are big enough to fit for at least 2yrs per child. I’ve got a drawer each for my kids, plus a shared sweater drawer. Some of my friends are shocked how little clothing mine have, even though it’d be 20 pieces each or more, not counting underwear or pjs (pjs are 2 or 3, maybe even 1 pair, per child)

I've done capsule wardrobes for my 2 little boys since they were babies. Mainly because my partner and I both have capsule wardrobes in similar colours and I didn't like the idea of having to do extra loads of laundry for really bright coloured kids' clothes or for too many clothes! But it's also great not feeling overwhelmed by over-stuffed drawers 😅

Matching babe's wardrobe with ours means we as a family usually look cohesive if not outright coordinated, all without major intention. It's really neat on pictures and outings to not have to worry about this stuff. When I tell people to start coordinating colours I always suggest starting with outerwear, since it stays the same, lasts forever and you'll always be coordinated.

For school my girls wore two colors and that helped them. We didn’t have uniforms at our school but they did enjoy wearing just two colors. They chose to wear as their school clothes. This helped them get dressed in the morning and everything always matched.💕 NonnaGrace 🐓

I too buy high quality and less! They do not need a lot of clothes. I look at what they have then fill in what they need! During spring and summer, 4 shorts, 1 khaki, one jean 2 bathing suits, 6 t’s, 1 or 2 polo style and 1 button dowm.1 pj. During fall and winter, 2 jeans, 2 joggers, 1khaki, 1 short. 2 polo style 3 sweatshirts, 5 or 6 long sleeves, coat hat rain jacket, 1 pj! 1 hoodie. Always 6 undies and 6socks. Also add Christmas pj and Christmas shirt.

What I do for my younger kids is whatever season it is they have “play clothes” for around the house and preschool which are last years same season clothes, usually a bit small and short but still fit. They have a few “nice clothes” to go out in and they have “church clothes” just for church (so that they stay nice and clean) that way I’m only buying a few nice clothes and church clothes at the beginning of every season and that’s it. Some clothes also can be used for multiple seasons so they get more wear out of them. Kids really don’t need that many clothes

Such a wonderful video. We have a minimal wardrobe for our family. I have to share something i once seen in a book. The quote me on this it probably the exact way it was explained. So this child psychiatrist said if we let our children decide they're own close "that's appropriate for the weather/occasion when they are two, three and four that they will be able to say stop or no to somebody trying to influence them or pressure them to do something they feel is wrong when they're thirteen, fourteen and fifteen. Because they will know what they want and be more assertive.

We get near all my son's clothes passed down to us from his cousins (Korean clothes so they are better higher end quality and cuter) i find if i do buy my 3 year old boy anything, it is overalls! Easy to adjust as they grow to get more wear. I find i need a bit more clothes for him because he lives to play in the dirt all day so thankful for cousin love and all the clothes. I always just have 2 pairs of shoes for him- gumboots or crocs (depending on summer or winter) for home and dressier sandshoes (sneakers) for church. If i didn't get these hand me downs, i think i would do as you have done. Love from 🇦🇺

STOOOP ❤ IM SO HAPPY thank you for posting! 😂 I'm going through my son's stuff and having a rummage sale at the end of the month- my main fear is not having enough clothes for him, and the money wasted acquiring all of this 😂 your video alleviated a LOT of stress from my mind. Now to figure out what isn't for us.

About 25 hours later. I have all of his clothing washed and separated into 4 groups. Pjs.1 giant capsule of black/denim/khaki/green and all things interchangeable. 1 fewer item capsule of navy, denim, and things interchangeable with that color scheme. And 1 of "play clothes" that are ok for paint, sand, garden (we get very very dirty around here) etc. There is SO MUCH. So I realize the need to downsize, but how do I know what to keep and what to part with. How do I do this?
@estherwegener890
@estherwegener890 11 ай бұрын
@@tetesclowntownI recently did this for my girls, so maybe slightly different, but the principle is probably the same. First I decided on a color scheme, choosing only navy or black, not both (that helps narrow down a lot), and then coordinating all other colors from there. After I'd removed the things that didn't fit within our scheme, I just took each type of item (short sleeve shirts, for example) and went through that pile, choosing only my/their very favorites until I got to the numbers I felt comfortable with (for me, that's 5-7 of each type of item, 3 of "nice/dressy" items, 1 of each jacket that we need - in our climate, we need snow coats, rain coats, and light jackets 😅), then donated everything else. It feels overwhelming at first, but I felt so much better after it was done!

❤ your videos ❤ I am about to have my 12th child. Our wardrobes are bigger but still minimalish:) Kid to Kid for most young kid purchases so I can get high quality for cheap 😅 My kids do a lot of outdoor chores and need Levi’s but also shorts and dresses to change into. We live in Utah so weather changes. My favorite tool I’ve learned is never ever putting their dirty laundry together. I wash each child’s hamper of clothing separately and teach them to do their own laundry as young as possible so they’re always helping when they’re little. I do wish we lived in Hawaii and I could get rid of more cold weather stuff 😂

Madi, honestly. You have changed my life! I heard you on the mellowmama podcast and have been a minimalist for the last 8 years. But the slow living has been harder to achieve. You have helped me in a few short weeks look into this more and work towards adopting more of this mindset. I have decluttered even more and feel so relaxed watching your videos, listening to your voice and truely ‘slowing down’ for the first time. And letting go of the anxiety and ‘high maintenance’ lifestyle! Would love to see more of your before and afters too. The little snippet of your wedding pics in a video seriously helped me to see how far i’ve already come too.

I have 4. Two 8 year old boys and girls of 14 and soon to be 13. The boys like to choose what they wear, but as the are football mad (UK) they seem to opt for a kit, the girls pick their clothes mostly. We do look second hand first. They have their own style already. It’s got easier. They do tell me that they need X and I always so do you really though. And make them think about when they would wear it and what would they wear it with etc. I want to bring up mindful children. Ones that care about waste the recycling. 😊

Love this idea! With my 12 month old daughter, I find it incredibly frustrating that so many kids clothes can’t be mixed and matched with each other. If you buy an outfit from Carter’s, the top and bottoms so often only make sense when paired with each other so you’re stuck with an outfit that isn’t very versatile. I’ve been making it a point lately to buy more items of clothing that are solid colors, neutral, with no prints or graphics on them. That way all her tops and bottoms and be paired together and allow for multiple outfit combinations. Today’s society favors overstimulation and overconsumption when it comes to our children. I’m trying to opt out of this for my family wherever possible, including with what we choose to wear.

My son is 17 months old and he changes about 5 times per day, because he plays a lot outside. I don't think I'd be able to wash and dry all his clothes every day. I purchase his clothes from friends who have bigger children. To me it is also a kind of sustainability. I'd be curious if Zara is the same as it is in Europe, but it isn't sustainable here. Everything arrives from Bangladesh... :(

Tip #1 Create a short list of what your child needs clothes for / from there clothes Tip #2 Make sure pieces coordinate to make as many outfits as possible Tip #3 Involve them in purchases, listen to preferences, honor their taste. Tip #4 Give them autonomy. (Make sure they can access their clothing) Tip #5 Avoid trendy “one time use” clothing

I have a problem of buying what is "cute" vs what will match. So while we are minimalist with our children's clothing and try to lean towards brands that are sustainable or well made, I tend to not have items that match well and thats something we will be working on since school will be starting soon and they will need clothes that don't have dirt and popsicle stains all over haha!
