Great work Danny! I love that you included that little interaction you had with people walking by. I always get so nervous someone is going to interrogate me about what I'm doing, but it's never that bad. It's usually exactly what you said, "a pleasant conversation".

People were super friendly and they usually are. There have been a few sketchy vibe moments before when I’m in the city but that was more of a lesson for me in learning where not to sketch haha.

Thanks! I’ll maybe have to make a video on it! It’s just a cheap tackle box from Walmart the size of my cellphone. It was really handy. I have a few more videos on it coming up. Tough to beat scenery like this!

What a lovely picture. You managed to make some of the trees pop forward and the others recede back. Such a tiny set up too! So clever. 🙂

Thank you! I’m thinking of repainting it in the studio in oils and maybe taking the composition. We’ll see…

Really nice job, Danny. Boy that’s a tiny pochade box! Looks like you need a James Gurney set up! Funny, I was just thinking of making one since my oil set up is getting too heavy for me. And it’s also funny because I was just thinking of getting more gouache too! Glad I saw your video. It’s been hot as hell out here in Hastings, Nebraska. Bet you’re glad you’re in the mountains! I’m gonna look up that painter you mentioned. Thanks

Thanks Barbara! It’s a small deal About the size of my phone. It was really nice for hiking around. I thought about attaching it to a tripod but decided I didn’t want to bring the tripod along either. Trying to go as light as possible. It’s not perfect yet but I’ll keep tweaking. The humidity we’re experiencing is brutal right now. I’m ready for autumn!

I forgot to make a follow up video on this set up! It’s actually a small tackle box or maybe waterproof phone case that I got in the fishing section at Walmart for $6. I used tape for the hinge and that’s it! Very simple and easy. Lately I have been using a flat handheld palette and taping my paper to it. I’ll try to make a video soon showing all my various set ups.

That turned out really nice with sensitive mark making in the foliage. What are you painting on? Is it gessoed? I went out yesterday with illustration board and it was frustratingly too absorbent.
@DannySabraArt
@DannySabraArt 5 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! This is just watercolor paper although it’s on the cheaper end, without any cotton content and I believe that makes it a little less absorbent. I actually really love an absorbent surface to paint on. I have painted on gesso but I’m not a fan of it. But if you want to cut down on the absorbency of illustration board try putting a single layer of acrylic on the surface. I do this frequently. Often I will use cheap acrylic paint to create a fun underpainting color to paint against like red or Orange or yellow and often it creates really interesting effects. You can see me doing that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7xnfJCSuc3eiKs.htmlsi=vWDFc36OK6XeGZQ0 But if you want to keep it white you could also use acrylic matte medium or simply white acrylic. Give it a try and let me know how that works for you! 👍

Hi. New subscriber here so sorry if you’ve already gone over what I’m about to ask. What brand of gouache do you use? I like your little set up.

Hey! No worries at all! I use mostly Winsor and Newton gouache except for on this painting trip I used Pthalo Blue by Utrecht. My local art store only Carrie’s a few colors by them in gouache but their pthalo is just about perfect for skies so it came in really handy. It’s similar to cobalt blue also if you ever want a cobalt replacement. But back to winsor and Newton, I really like their colors and find they are good quality for the price when it comes to gouache.

This painting turned out really well! What brand of gouache do you prefer? I also get nervous when people come up to talk. Mostly because I’m not quite confident in my painting yet 😆

I feel that way too! It seems like people always come up early in the painting when it looks like garbage. They never seem to stop by at the end haha! I normally use Windsor and Newton cause it’s accessaible in the full range at my local art store but they recently started carrying a few Utrecht colors and I wanted to try a Pthalo blue they had to replace cobalt (which I started using in oils before I realized it’s toxicity) I love the color and I find it to be more close to sky blue than ultramarine usually is and I really like it. I have one pthalo in oils that I almost never use because it’s so dark and strongly tinted and saturated but this one in gouache seems to be already tinted with some white so it’s not so dark and it really works well with skies or making warm greens. I did find it a little watery out of the tube but that could just be this one tube or color. I’ll have to try some of their other colors and see. In general it’s pretty similar to W&N

@@DannySabraArt yes! I’ve thought of that too. Usually where I’ve been painting lately there’s not many folks around. But I try to tell them I’ve only just started and they should come back in 2 hours or so 😆 they never do

@@momopaints haha. Yep. I’ve seen some folks where they print a brochure or just something that illustrates their work in case someone is an interested buyer. I really should do that. I usually carry some Business cards and people are often excited to get those even though I’ve never turned one into a sale I figure it doesn’t hurt.
