When my wife and I visited Moscow for the first time some university students who knew English but wanted a more "Western" accent were asking me to walkthrough step by step how to pronounce certain words and it was a blast. They were incredibly appreciative and kind. I was surprised at how similiar Americans and Russians are when it comes to behavior (in a good way). I met Russians from all over Russia in Moscow and again it was a blast. Definitely recommend.

Also remember that within the UK and US there are numerous native accents, based on region, class, education, race and/or ethnic background. So I roll my eyes a bit when someone talks about speaking English with a "proper" accent.

Then i watched your videos, showed this to my friends and they're all like 'this guy has the same accent as you,' So for a long time i've been speaking english with a russian accent. Cool

Two notes: It sounds British only in the sense that you commonly (even now, 2 years later) use a soft R rather than the American hard R. Also you also lean on the "F" sound as an easy substitute for non-vocalized "th" sound... cuz there's no such sound in Russian. But in general, it's a very mild, easy to understand, casual accent.

I think your accent is fine. The only times I really hear something that sounds more Russian is in words with 'oo' or 'ou' type words. I even heard it a little when you said "born" at the end of the video. I think the biggest thing that throws people is that you say words the way British people do, but while trying to emulate a more American accent. The more lazy way of pronouncing 'tt' or some other words you pointed out is much more of an American thing so if you smoothed out the 'oo's or 'ou's and the occasional 'ch' I don't think people in America, ESPECIALLY west coast would even notice. A lot of the lazier routes you take while speaking English are extremely common on the west coast and in the north east. No so much south or midwest. Sounding good though dude.

Awwww cute this vid helped me revive my Scots 😂😂 tysm I didn't realise just how similar certain pronunciations are in Scottish and Russian - still a fair share of differences. I did notice a lot however how close Anglo-Irish dialects get to western slavs speaking English.

Okay so first off your English is on point my dude, yes you can tell you're Russian however that's the same thing as if I (an American) came to Russia and tried convincing people I was from there, I feel like I couldn't because there's still remnants or traces of my American accent, it's like something you'll never be able to get rid of. Anyway, to my point lol. When you said "want to learn" and then "wanna learn" - you actually sound more American when saying "wanna" instead of "want to" because a lot of the time (especially where I'm from) we abbreviate things like "want to" to "wanna" or "going to" to "gonna", things like that. I also say "ect-et-era" instead of "ect-cetra" however that's probably again because of where I'm from lol. Also when you said "but it is" - You said it correctly again (the way you say it). In conversation I'll never say "but it is" as three separate words, it just doesn't flow right for me but does for some people, so instead I say "butid-is" basically how you say it and not one American would question you on that. You're right when you say we're kinda (kind of) lazy when it comes to pronouncing our words haha. Anyway, you have amazing English and I can only hope to have partly as good Russian one day! A lot of Brits, especially Scots barely pronounce the T in a lot of words like “letter”. We tend to use a glottal stop, which isn’t exactly a sound.

Hey, I’m half British and here’s a few comments on the video: your accent sounds WAY more American than British to me! Actually it sounds almost entirely American. I would suggest you continue pronouncing words the American way to have consistency. Also it depends where you live in the UK but people here also use both ‘either’ pronunciations. Alsooo as half Eastern European I have to say your English is deffo golden tier compared to the spoken standard in the region, so if people don’t compliment you on it they’re either envious or they don’t realise how low the average actually is lol. You should be super confident speaking.

The thing he talks about mixing accents from different places is real as hell for me in Spanish. I use vocabulary primarily from Mexico and Spain but have pronunciation features from a Puerto Rican teacher I had in high school. When you're not fully immersed in a native-speaking environment, it's very easy to just absorb influences from various media or individuals that come from various areas and end up with a totally random accent that sounds like it's from everywhere

I have litterally been watching your videos at double speed with no subtitles your english is perfectly understandable. Also I've lived in America my whole life I also have no consistancy with how I say either I just kinda alternate between the two a lot of english speakers do that with a lot of words. The way you do that is inconsistant and that just means you are more like a normal english speaker.

You have amasing English, I only speak English myself and anyone who can speak it as a second language, I think that is super impressive. Your accent sounds like you've been living in New York for 20+ years, great pronunciation. American English is better is some ways because it doesn't have so many weird accents. Some dialects of British English don't pronounce the Ts at all let alone reduce it to a D like many American accents; we just sort of make a noise at the back of our throats instead... unless they come at the beginning of the word..or if that word is an exception to this rule of which there are many... So "butter" in reduced to "buh-er", "internet" would be "inh-erneh". We also add a R sound if a word ends with a pronounced vowel and the next word begins with a pronounced vowel, unless the word is an exception. So "I bought butter from the internet and it had bacteria on it" would be "I bouh buh-er from the inh-erneh and ih had bacteria-r-onih" notice you still pronounce the T in "bacteria" because it is an exception. I think it must be impossible to actually learn British pronunciation like this without actually living here in the UK, or at least living with someone with a thick accent.

As a native speaker, I had no idea about the vs thee when a vowel or consonant is placed after. I don't believe that was ever taught to me that specifically. I just sort of learned it as I went. I was quite surprised to hear Roman bring that up.

You are so right about the article thing. A lot of people from Chechia, Slovakia, Russia and probably a load of other countries too tend to put in an article where one is not needed and don't put one in where there should be one. I assume they are just following their native language conventions, but it's a huge giveaway in people who's English is otherwise very good.

Australian here Roman. Still remember the first time I watched one of your videos thinking how amazing your English was, and how easy you were to understand. What little “accent” you might have is charming, so wouldn’t worry about losing it. Even us native speakers of English have an accent! I need to get rid of my American accent when speaking Russian

You can develop/change your accent if you hangout people that speak a certain way long enough. They've done studies on this with people living together for extended periods of time like in scientific expeditions to Antarctica that last months. Everyone spoke a bit differently when they got back because not everyone spoke English as their primary language and they mixed all accents into one lol. This is also the way localized accent develop over a long time.

Too be honest in the UK where I am from we don’t pronounce the words how they are written down. Like the word Later for example when I or my friends etc say it we say Lay-Er. We kind of just cut our breath on the T instead of actually saying the T. We do it with 99% of words mixed in with slang so it’s pretty easy too understand people when they don’t pronounce it properly because we barely use proper English anymore😂

As a Finnish person who's been taught English the British way but keep hearing it and communicating in the American way, i find myself in a similar situation where i speak in this horrible amalgamate of an accent.

You sound great! The i in architecture isn't pronounced "ee" though, it's literally i like in "it". Also I'm Canadian, we always pronounced the t in often! The biggest thing that stands out to me in Russian speakers is the r, you often pronounce r at the end of words as "ah", instead or "are". For either you're saying eit-hah or eye-thah, got go harder on the r regardless of how it starts :)

I remember when i was playing a tournament with a bunch of European and American clan members and when i tried to say something my heavy ass latino accent would kick in and they would just laugh at me, that made me feel really bad and so i tried to improve my pronunciation, im happy that i could improve it but now when i try to tell my family something that i saw in the internet and was in english i forget to say the words in spanish and i just end up looking like and idiot that doesn't know how to speak spanish. Kill me.

Your accent, vocabulary, syntax and pronunciation is all excellent, better than many people whom English is their first language. As for slightly different pronunciations of certain words I really don't think it matters. Here in the UK for example, the word "task" up north they would pronounce it tassk where as down south we pronounce it tarsk. All of these slight differences are down to location so for someone from a non English speaking country there really is no right or wrong way to pronounce certain things.
