I Tried HD-Zero's "High Resolution" Camera

The new HD Zero Micro V3 camera to other popular systems like DJI and Walksnail. The Micro V3 camera boasts a native resolution of 1080p at 30 frames per second, with enhanced anti-aliasing and image quality in standard resolution mode. With a larger lens for reduced vignetting and improved low-light performance, the camera promises a superior experience. However, it does not support flying at 540p at 90 frames per second like its predecessor. The 3-to-5-inch build range makes it ideal for most setups, while the Nano V3 camera is more suitable for smaller builds or whoops.
During testing, the standard resolution mode did not make a significant difference in image quality. However, switching to 1080p mode revealed a bug in the goggles, impacting video smoothness. This issue will hopefully be rectified in a future firmware update. Despite this setback, the high resolution mode does deliver an overall improvement in image quality.
It's important to note that HD Zero operates as a one-way system, while DJI and Walksnail allow the VTX to repeat information, resulting in either more latency or a blocky image. When comparing the Micro V3 camera to DJI and Walksnail, we employed the respective setups for each system.
Moving on to discussing our FPV flight setups, I currently utilize goggles X with stock antennas and a Rush Cherry v2 on the quad. For HD Zero, I rely on the stock antenna from the Freestyle V2, TrueRC stubbies, and a pair of TrueRC X2 Air Mark IIs for the goggles. Although this is not a rigorous scientific test, but rather a quick flight test, it provided a glimpse into their performances.
When testing Walks Now, the image quality left a positive impression. Next up was DJI O3, which performed exceptionally well, meeting our expectations. In a side-by-side comparison, HD Zero stood out as a different system altogether, while Walks Now and DJI exhibited more similarities. To make a relatable analogy, it's like comparing a track-built car to a regular dealership car. Those seeking an FPV system that feels more like a consumer product might find HD Zero less appealing. However, for those desiring ultra-low latency and a more locked-in experience, DJI and Walksnail cannot match the capabilities of HD Zero.
To achieve that optimal experience, I recommend utilizing the Micro V3 and the Freestyle VTX V2. It's worth noting that the original Freestyle VTX is not compatible with any builds. Its good that you touched on the difference between one and two way systems, but I think its worth going a little deeper. DJI and WS require retransmission because the VTX sends h265 compressed video. With compression like that, the loss of small bits of key information can lead to the rest of the information being useless. The whole point of compressing is removing data redundancy, so if you dont get everything, you often get nothing. Eg, h265 compresses by comparing frames over time and sending only differences to a keyframe. So if you didnt get all you needed from a keyframe, differences from that keyframe become useless information, and you get corrupted video for the next 50-100+ frames. This is why WS and DJI absolutely depend on retransmission. And if retransmission doesnt work the first time, they need to try again, and again which can lead to stuttering and freezing. HDzero sends uncompressed video, this allows the goggles to show whatever it is receiving, even if some or much of that is junk data. There is no dependency on old data, every frame is discarded after being shown, no need to ask retransmission just grab and show the next frame . This helps with latency but just as importantly for long range pilots, it allows you to reestablish a link instantly after you lost it , because there is no connection with HDZ, no handshake. With DJI and WS this may take several seconds or never happen at all.

You seem to forget not everyone flies quads. Latency of a few dozen milliseconds isn’t even noticeable on fixed wing. The constant interference of HDZero is though.

I wonder how HDZero would look if the lost data was replaced with a smoothed average from the surrounding data, reducing the harsh visual impact of the image breakup?

Yeah HDZero is unbelievable for me and my fast Freestyle flying and MultiGP Racing! DJI V2 System and O3 are great for slow flowy Freestyle and exploring! I own and love both! Cheers and Happy New Year 🎊🎉

I've never tried HDzero... Of course, I like 'wire speed' methodolgy that hdz uses - kind of like redbook CD... but it just looks so shitty, by comparison. I suppose if I were flying "bando" or something, I might prefer it... Oh, I guess that I'll have to try it someday

I have v2 and v3 vtx's. Also have several runcams including the 90fps. My best penetration has been with circular polarized antennas on both ends. I also have flat panels designed for RHCP antennas. At 200mw I'm more worried about losing control surfaces before I'm out of clean video range. Weaving trees is no issue ....

i put a runcam eagle lens on a V2 and it looks great with 1080p 30 f

What I understand from this, is that 1080p30 stutering is still present, so 1080p30 is still a no go. Thanks

I was watching other videos before I found yours. They said not to use HDZero for long-range. Do you agree with that? It's because I am thinking of purchasing HDZero.

I enjoy the comparison to other HD systems. However, I am at the point of gearing up for FPV and really need some comparison advice. High-end analog or HDZero... ??
