Part of it was surf music too. He use to hang out at Dick Dale's store. Dale was an early Stratocaster pioneer. When Jimi wrote that line, "you'll never heard surf music again", it was a reference to Dale being diagnosed with cancer. Jimi was into the R&B scene up in the NW.

Let's not forget amazing natural ability and creativity. He wasn't just "good". He changed the way the guitar sounded, the way it was played, and opened up new doors. He even changed the way people THOUGHT about the guitar. It's been over 50 years since his death and guitarists are still building on his work.

Labeling a skill as a "natural ability" conveniently absolves individuals from recognizing that with determination, they can attain similar proficiency. By attributing success solely to innate talent, one evades the responsibility of striving for greatness.

Well, transcribing music is the easiest way to become a skilled musician. Even though I sometimes learn songs using tabs or tutorial vids I acknowledge it's not really the most productive way of learning songs.
@TheDilligan

I wanted to play like Hendrix. I did exactly this. I looked into his influences. Same with Clapton. I went back and learned early blues stuff by ear. Then one day I was able to guess Little Wing by ear in one shot because everything about it just made sense from all the old blues stuff I learned. Early blues is incredibly good to learn for anyone looking to learn modern music because it is the foundation everything else is built on. Very little is difficult after learning that stuff.

What should I practice? I am an inspiring guitarist
@TheDilligan
@TheDilligan Жыл бұрын
@@oliverb.8995 Learn to play the music you like. Then look up what songs/artists were the inspiration to that music. Then learn those songs. Then you can take the next step and learn what those were inspired by and go as deep down the rabbit hole as you like. The goal is to not only be able to play a song, but understand how the song was written. In the beginning, you have zero understanding of why an artist would choose this chord or that chord, or move to that fret, etc... And the goal is to demistify that so that you can compose similar music yourself, completely on the fly. It also helps you to take the songs you like and make them your own. Learning some music theory helps tremendously. Looking into something like the CAGED system can give you a good understanding of the fretboard pretty quickly. The 12 bar blues progression is also a great thing to learn. You'll find that variations of it exist in many songs across all modern genres of music. I personally found it extemely helpful to learn chicago blues songs by Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Bo Didley, BB King, Freddie King, Albert King, etc.. It was the basis for rock and roll, hip-hop, and pop music.

At 10 y.o. I started my lifelong (66 yrs) guitar journey, and Jimi was at the center of it all. You listen and listen and LISTEN, just because you LOVE it and it makes you high, makes you feel things that are amazing. Eventually it is so ingrained in your heart and musical sensibilities that you naturally emulate and “channel” (sorry but it’s a pretty good word lol) the essence. You play a lick so many times that you know that it sounds and *feels* just like how Jimi played it. Kudos to this young man - Sharing HIS journey with Jimi Hendrix with us. This is how his generation does it. Yes, he’s blasting it to the internet. So what? Bottom line is - this kid is spending hour upon hour, day after day, absorbing the heart and soul and *back story* to Jimi’s playing. *Good for you brother! Keep carrying the torch and bringing our hero into the next generation!* 🫡✌🏼

Nice little clip! I've been obsessed with studying and learning all of Hendrix work, techniques, equipment and so on for 20+ years now. I'm very familiar with the quotes from Hendrix in this video and have applied them to myself. I find both aspects (playing to records and "jamming") are extremely useful. Sitting with a record will grow and develop your ear Imensely compared to tabs or instructional videos etc... Using your ears is so beneficial I can't stress it enough. Then take all the licks, progression, chords and ideas you've learned from the records and just spend hours jamming on them by yourself, learn them inside and out. A major trait in Jimi's riffing is he would play a lot of licks forward then repeat it backwards, this is essential in his lead work. It's not always present but it's one of those little details that are signature to his sound. One aspects that is nearly impossible to duplicate in Jimi's playing is the effortless creativity he had. Music would pour out of him like a faucet and it was always sounding fresh and unique. The craziest aspect of Jimi is how rooted he was in the pentatonic. He rarely steps outside of it yet could make it sound fresh and original constantly. Learn Jimi's songs and lead work, most of it is the same chords and the same scales for EVERY song. The amount of diversity he could pull out of his pentatonic runs is mind blowing. I still get blown away today when I step back and just analyze the notes and it's literally just the same top half of the pentatonic. It's hard to describe but I'm sure anyone that has studied Jimi's technique even at a glance will see this. Jimi has inspired me for 21 years since I first picked up the guitar and still inspires me every day. I still learn something new every day from Jimi and I've spent so much time studying him that it feels as if he was/is my teacher. I love seeing Jimi continue to inspire, I see myself in nearly all guitarist that become infatuated with him, seeing them go thru and learn like I did in my Jimi obsession. I'm hoping to start a channel to share the wealth of information I've learned and to share my perspective and my 'Experience' studying Jimi's work obsessively for so long. Peace love and happiness ✌

I agree with you. I am also a fan of Jimi, I learned from his songs - I played by ear from a tape recorder. my solos are like his. but it's just a copy. and when I read the book about Jimi and listened to the interview, I learned a lot of interesting details and, most importantly, about his favorite performers from whom he studied. and now I understand where his doublestops, slides, bends came from.. how long do you play the guitar? how many hours a day? write down your workout plan.

I think jamming along to music is essential for improv, plus it’s a fun way to practice. But I also think it’s useful to have some fundamentals in your practice routine, like chop building. If I want to play faster, the easiest way to build speed is with a metronome and some chop building exercises, usually variations of scales.

i’ve never had a lesson, or practice really a whole lot. obviously i okay but i don’t sit down and play scales. i just kinda okay and by no means am i great at guitar. but people don’t understand all you have to do is put time in and you will get better and better. if i saw how i can play now a year ago i would be shocked. playing actually decent solos just off the top of my head, nothing feels better than playing random notes and making something that actually sounds really cool

In fact, Jimi didn't know any country blues until he started playing with John Hammond in New York in 1965. Before, he played NW rock and Chuck Berry, R&B stuff, he used to hang at the Spanish Castle in S. Seattle and i assure you there was no Muddy Waters played there, because I was there, too.

learning by ear will progress a musician more than any theory class at any school

Sure but if you ever want to work in music professionally it’s best to learn theory
@scotttripp2137

@@hansolo9585 unless your goal is 50 person sheet reading band then absolutely not. all anyone really needs is basic chords a pentatonic scale and with practice comes more theory naturally. theres no need to focus on theory when all you have to do is learn songs and play more. most musicians i respect aren't there for the theory, most are there because of their expression through their instrument. metallica for example; extremely basic music for the most part just somewhat fast but one of the greatest bands of their time. hendrix was there for his expression, david gilmoure because you felt it, led zeppelin because the whole band was extremely unique. music isnt about theory. theory is the equivalent to learning how to tie your shoes or brush your teeth.

@@scotttripp2137 Naming rockstars from 50 years ago who all, besides Hendrix, learned and utilized theory doesn’t really prove anything.

@@hansolo9585 yes but they aren't who they are because of their use of theory its because of the way they played and expressed them self. and yes ill name musicians from the peak of music because we should strive for greatness not the mediocrity of the music scene that gets promoted today. theory is a simple and small building block that you will learn naturally with practicing guitar. theres no point in taking a class other than to force yourself to play because you dont have the actual drive to learn yourself

Playing along with music using my Fender Micro helps me a lot. Cool to know that he learned the same way. I read that he was often found with his guitar on his chest asleep late at night or morning. He literally lived breathed ate slept Guitar. Ps I have the same Jimi Hendrix guitar !! The Fender Olympic white Jimi Hendrix one

Jimi used to sleep with his guitar. I heard a guy who said he saw Willie Nelson play for 13 hours straight.
