This was the last set that Jørn Thomsen worked on before he passed. If you don't know, he designed almost every 90s space faction sets you can think of as well as many other LEGO classics. He started working at LEGO in 1986 and worked right up until the time of his passing in early 2023. Jørn calculated all the gear ratios for this orrery by hand(!) and the fact that he took so many of us on unforgettable memories into imaginary LEGO Space worlds to then finish his LEGO (and real life) journey with a set representing the celestial mechanics of his home system, is just a work of cosmic poetry. Vale Jørn! 🖤💜💙💜🖤

@@taqresu5865 I'm sure he did know Jørn. Shame he didn't mention it in the review, which is why I commented. Yeah, I remember the controversy when Tiago put his own initials on the Ship in a Bottle instead of Jake Sadovich's (the fan designer who submitted the idea). Tiago has his initials in other places too - mainly gravestones 😅

I remember seeing someone sharing a photo of Jorn, amongst friends with this set but I didn't manage to find it, that's why I didn't mention but I am totally aware! I briefly met him when I did a week long "internship" for the Mindstorms team. He wasn't a man of many words, but I got to see how brilliant he was with Technic and simple yet effective mechanisms. How poetic that this was his last set, a true testament to Jorn's genius. RIP

LEGO Technic is my favourite kind of LEGO, I have many memories as a kid getting the original excavator and motorcycle sets that had the yellow trays to sort the pieces and making a working machine. As an adult I love my super car with a working engine, doors. I loved building the 42100 LEGO Technic Liebherr Excavator and I'm almost finished with the Dune Orni. I am so sad with all the negativity around the Orni set, it's amazing yet so many LEGO purists are dumping on it.
@taqresu5865

@@brownjames112 I like Technic, because I grew up with Bionicle, which instilled in me the love for the Technic system. I didn't buy the Orni simply because I've never seen nor read Dune. My most recent Technic set is the Perseverance Rover, because I'm more of a NASA guy than a car guy. I also found s complete Monster Jam Megalodon set at a Thriftstore for really cheap. The only problem with it was the poor condition of the box (which gave me LEGO Racers (2003) flashbacks because of the pullback motor.

Yep, in my youth i also did a lot of Lego Technic assemblies (although I did not have many sets and only assembled them once or so, but all the parts could be used for all manner of complicated mechanical things (like a machine to put glass marbles in a tray automatcially irrespectively of how long time passed between feeding the mechanism the individual marbles). However in this set, you should probably add a counterweight and truss on the opposite side of the earth-moon truss in order to balance the thing and to keep it small you can use steel nuts or similar in a Lego box instead of just lots of legos...

Even cooler space fact: the entire solar system is moving around the center of the milky way at a 60.2 degree angle to the flat plane of the galaxy at approximately 200km/s. So when we make one rotation around the Sun (a year), we’ve actually moved in a corkscrew. (For the Sun to make an entire lap around the Milky Way it would take 230 million years.)

Honestly I can't understand the appeal of adult brick-built sets, i thought the whole point of Lego as a kid was to build in complexity until the adult stuff was like, the Architecture line. @@Floorslug I like cars. But It feels like they're taking the place of everything. If you look at the currently 10 biggest technics set that Lego sells as I talk. There are 8 car, 1 crane and 1 helicopter. Even the construction machines are rare now. Technic is all about functionalitys, and the cars are not very playable (what is the point of having an amazing gearbox if you almost don't see it working). Sets like orrery are pure functional. We need more set like this. I love motorised construction machines and it is a shame that the only one currently is the crane who doesn't even have a gearbox, and the only interest are the pulleys. But this set is way too expensive anyway, and the licence liebherr means nothing because the set is very unrealist.

It's for car people, people with an engineering mind or background, and for people who just like to see how things work. Technic is about THAT, not the finish product looking as accurate as possible. Hence why it's called "TECHNICal". It's not for everyone, but it has a huge following. I personally LOVE a lot of Technic stuff, as well as System builds.

The thing that impresses me about the accuracy is by using Lego part 32016, the tilt of the earth is 22.5 degrees, which is very close to the actual value of 23.5°. However, since the axial tilt of the earth changes over time, this orrery will become increasingly accurate over the next 10,000 years

I can't wait to grab this one. I fell in love the moment it was revealed. This is the kind of set Technic excels at - one that proudly displays mechanical systems. This set even goes further and models a physical system that we all experience the movement of every day, and makes us pay attention to things we often take for granted. This set gives the builder a deeper understanding of science and engineering. I seriously doubt lego will produce a more inspired set in the next few years, and I don't say that lightly.

Great review as ever Tiago. I bought this on release day as I too love space and orrerys. Like you I find technic stressful but had to have it. Did you know it also takes 364 spins of earth to go around the sun, how close is that?! Also the angle of the piece holding the earth is 22.5° which is only 1 degree off the earth’s true axis tilt - its such an accurate orrery that every school should have one and marketed as a “toy” is an injustice. Thanks again Tiago.

Both numbers for the lunar cycles are correct! It takes about 27 days for the moon to go around the Earth, but it ALSO takes 29 days roughly for the cycle to go from New Moon to New Moon. The reason for this is that in the time it takes to go around the Earth, the Earth has also travelled around the sun, and since the moon phase depends on the position of the moon relative to the Sun…it takes another two days to get back into the New Moon position.

From simple price/parts measure, this looks ridiculously expensive, but that doesn't take into account the outrageous number of gears this includes. Gears always drive up the price, especially large turntables and the enormous 4-piece ring gear used (although not as a functional gear) as a base. Even if you didn't like the orrery itself (and it's pretty great), this would be a solid parts pack for anyone who wants a broad selection of parts for geared mechanisms of their own.

0:21 I found this statement interesting considering that Technic, like all Lego systems, is based on instructions. I understand that the builds can be complex, however in my experience the instructions are usually pretty clear and easy to follow. Of course "hardness" is a debatable topic. The issue I see with criticising the ability to take them apart is that the sets have to be sturdy, they have to hold together under stress after all. I honsesty think that despite flaws, there aren't many other ways the Technic system could be done. Just wanted to state my opinion, as usual this was a quality video 👍

Shoutout to the construction skill of OSRS for introducing me to orreries! When I saw this set in a store I immediately told mum about the awesome orrery set and she didn't know that that was.

If you build technic for a long time you know the secrets. I've gotten engaged with system sets primarily because of you Tiago! Pretty sure I'd pay money to hear you complain about Technic for 20 minutes. 😂

I think it would amazing if you could put a light inside the sun, then you would see the shadows on the moon and earth in real time. In fact if you could 3d print a clear sun, you probably could do that.

Lego Technic is my favorite theme in general. My least favorite theme sets are the ones based on movies and tv shows.

This is going to be my first lego set. At first, I hesitated. I am a 14 yr teen, and surely, why would I even require this from an educative perspective? Well, actually other than that, I just like the accuracy of the model. Besides, I am buying lego for mechanics and not as from a model standpoint. Models can be built by me, but the complex mechanics and accuracy is possible only with lego. I am happy with my purchase, as a working model and also for its accuracy and visuals
