What disappoints me the most about MacOS is how all these awesome features are so difficult to find. There's nothing in the UI to indicate that they exist, which means that you can spend your entire life thinking that they don't.
@breadone_
@breadone_ Жыл бұрын
honestly i think this is better than the alternative, which is when something like android gives you a billion popups telling you what gestures/actions you can do. thats the most annoying thing!
@miguelguthridge
@miguelguthridge Жыл бұрын
@@breadone_ there are more than just two ways to do a UI. On Windows and Linux, keyboard shortcuts are shown next to the name of the action in a more dull text colour. Even a few apps that run on MacOS do this (such as VS Code). It's just Apple that hides any hint of complexity, thereby hiding the fact that MacOS is somewhat possible to use efficiently. Of course giving a billion pop-ups is a terrible idea, but to suggest that it's the only alternative to having a woeful lack of affordances is simply not true.

I'm just happy to see people try. I used Windows from about 1993 through 2009. I wanted to try something different and switched to Mac at home, stayed there until 2021 and switched back to Windows due to hardware issues (on a 12 year old machine, that's not surprising). Now I will say, I work in IT. Computers have been my thing since I was under 10 years old. I've used most flavors of Windows, MacOS, Linux, BeOS, etc and enjoy it and am good at memorizing layouts/keyboard shortcuts - so I'm not your average user. That said, I definitely recommend exploring OS's. Plus if there's something you don't like, don't blame the OS or say it sucks right away just because its new. Find out how to solve your problem, and you may even discover you can tweak it or do something even more powerful with a utility/shortcut. This is why I love computers, I don't get frustrated by them often, I learn them! As to CTRL+TAB between tabs/windows, this is useful for those that don't use the mouse as much. Once you build up muscle memory for keyboard shortcuts, you'd be amazed what you can do without leaving the keyboard.

Essentially in Mac OS, it follows the order of the files in the finder window, so if you go right right right and hit the edge, it cant go any further unless you press down and keep going However, in windows, you can just keep going right and it'll automatically move to the next row and keep going regardless of what view mode you are in ( list or icons ) so in conclusion in windows moving between the previews has nothing to do with the order/distribution of the files in the window, which makes much more sense IMO
@mrbekong

Yup, you're using the arrow keys to merely select the item in Finder. Just act like the Preview window isn't there, the arrow keys are focused on the Finder window behind it, and when you highlight the next item, the Preview window will refresh to the new item.

My favorite is still that when you have an option. Say in the menu bar, and youngish alt. It slightly changes the action. For example. If you hold alt while clicking reboot, sleep or shutdown, it removes the three dots and skips the dialog to make sure you really want to. If you hold alt for ‘about this mac’ it changes to systeminfo. On the right side of the menu bar when you hold alt and click WiFi!p, Bluetooth or sound, you’ll see extra info. For it comes in handy to hold alt and “WiFi settings” changes to “network settings”

To go to the parent directory of the current folder, use Cmd+Up, and to open a directory or file, use Cmd+Down. Combine this with typing the first letters of a file/folder name to select it, and right/left to preview folder contents, and you can navigate a directory tree pretty quickly.

Here's another trick on the "Get Info" panels. In addition to these: - Cmd+I (open one panel per file) - Ctrl+Cmd+I (open a panel for the group of files) There's one more: - Cmd+Opt+I (*toggle* a panel that *updates dynamically* as you change the selection) This is the one I use most often.

@@arty5906 The finder doesn’t automatically show the size of folders (Cmd+J allows you to select the option to show folder sizes, but it only works on the current Finder window, not on all windows) but if you are in the process of selecting folders so you can find out how much space they collectively take up, this dynamic info window becomes useful in that manner.

Indescribable is how I'd describe MacOS. A command button, a control button and an option button. I know they're not buttons, they're keys. Coming from Windows, it's Greek to me. Like, I don’t know, maybe if you could *_touch_* the screen, like you can on most other computing devices nowadays. I don’t get what you mean by complicated. Red button in top left corner of window closes window. Green button expands window to full screen. Anything more useful requires learning a few shortcuts, or just print them , cut them out and attach the clipping to the top of your keyboard. I’ve done this for years to help me remember my keyboard shortcuts. There are plenty of them for each app you use, and plenty of folks who have made cheat sheets for them that you can print.

Note that command shift 5 has much more precise screenshot controls, and also allows you to do screen recording

You actually can go between images and quick look in the folder if you youbuse down and up keys. Which is logical where files are stacked vertically

At 5:20 you could also just drag the disk to the bin. It automatically ejects the disk.

Now my Dell XPS 13 has got me used to modern hardware stuff like premium build materials, usb-c everything, great screen and backlit keyboard, I'd be interested in going back to a macbook again.

@4:25 you might not be able to hold shift and select all those images until they're in list view. However, when they are in thumbnail view (or whatever mode they're in right now), you can hold shift while drawing multiple boxes over several items and it'll stay selected

If you have a full keyboard with the second delete key, it will delete backwards. Works identically to windows. It's just that MacBooks only have one delete key (which is the same as the 'backspace' key in Windows), so that's why you have fn+delete.
