Thank you to Function of Beauty for sponsoring this video! I finally tried the curly girl method, which you guys have apparently been recommending for FOUR YEARS?! Turns out, it might actually be working for me! The curly girl method is a hair care routine (with many different options depending on your specific hair type) that focuses on hydrating your hair properly and bringing out your natural curls/waves, which some people may have just been brushing away their whole lives! @@lowercase_ash Same, I used to have such a curly hair as a baby/toddler - as I grew older, my hair grew, so it appeared less and less wavy. I consider my hair to be straight (and I also used to straighten it every day, for about 10 years) though it was never perfectly straight. Sometimes it's so frizzy and dry, I might try this out too!!! p.s. my brother discovered this year that his hair is actually curly af!

Yep me too. My brother was the one that told me. He has very long wavy hair. I don't know why I thought it wasn't possible because my relatives are a mix of very wavy/curly hair and some straight. My dad has very straight hair, but my mom actually has pronounced waves in her hair. She has it in a short bob. I always thought my hair was just frizzy. In fact, my brother and I battle the frizz much of our life lol. Now I'll tell him how to take care of his hair because we were damaging it a lot since people always say asians have only straight hair so we did hair straightening treatments.

@@pumpkinonastick3928 its kinda hard when you go your whole life hearing people call my curly hair ugly or frizzy and things like "your hair is not ready?" "Are you crazy, you want to go out looking like this?". I spent my whole life with blow drying my hair stright and resenting my natural hair. All of a sudden recently people around me are embracing curly hair and act as if they never hated ot or saw it as a bad thing before. I tried to embrace my natural curls. Read alot, saw videos, gave it good treaments, switched my diet to something healthy, bought a bunch of products, and still people didnt think my hair was presentable. I like curly hairs on others. On me its a love hate relationship. I had enough of those mean comments and my hair not co-operating to anything no matter what i do to it, so i chopped it short. I wish my journey with my hair ended there but it didnt and the mean and contradicting comments still continued. I hope everyone else has a better hair journey. If it's any comfort, I was 40 before a hairdresser explained to me in the kindest possible tones that the reason my hair goes into demented little curls when it gets rained on is... because I have curly hair. @Cosmo Cosmo seriously the curly girl method is so much fancier than needed. You need like 5 different products according to it which is just so extra. Like I own a shampoo, conditioner, a leave in conditioner/serum/cream (like one of the three depending on how my hair is and what hair style I'm going for). Using three different products on the same day is just so unnecessary. Also braiding your hair when you sleep/just hanging out at home helps it stay untangled and even curls.

Just wanted to boost you up and let you know its ok to not be ready quite yet to let go of those last few inches. But also? Your hair is going to feel brand new to you and so so amazing when you do go for that chop, even if its a little shorter than you're used to. You're good either way! Chase your bliss! Your hair has TONS of potential. I have no doubt that if you continue treating your hair with the curly method it’ll just get curlier and healthier with time. Your hair is naturally thick and seems very strong and healthy despite getting it permanently straightened. I think with the right haircut at a curly hair salon and your hair will flourish! Keep going that way🙏🏽♥️ (plus avoid heat, it’ll just ruin the whole progress and make your curls repair slower and slower). Most importantly-don’t give up on your curls!! Keep up with the curly routines👏🏽

I've been trying to care for my curly hair for a long time and I think I can give you some tips. 1) never shampoo anything other than your scalp. The rest of your hair truly doesn't need it. Deep-conditioning is your best friend. 2) you always need much more product than you think you do. The leave in should turn frothy almost and fully saturate the hair (if the leave in is too heavy you can mix it out with water as needed, but definitely use a THOROUGH amount, if you know what I mean). 2.5) you don't need that many hair products after the shower. Loc works for most and you can do less. A leave-in and then a gel or an oil or a mousse should work amazing. 3) a diffuser will help you a LOT as you have longer hair. It will help you dry it before the weight drags it down. (plopping also works but then you should leave it on preferably until it's fully dry, not just 20min) 4) any spray bottle with water will be a godsend during styling, you don't need a fancy one. I find the hair needs to be sopping wet for the best results, most people claim it should be a dryer than that. 5)never ever EVER brush your dry hair with anything other than your fingers, and even then don't 😂. 6) a good brush is a strong ally. One for detangling and a different one for styling is best but I make do with just one fine. 7)yes water and product will go everywhere including your clothes walls floor and mirrors. Try not to get product all over your skin and then forget to wash it off (pretty sure I gave myself shoulder-acne from the leave-in as I have shoulder length hair) 8) After you're done styling, DO NOT TOUCH your hair until it is fully and completely dry. 9) avoid any kind of straightening or high heat high manipulation styling. And don't ever let anybody near your hair with thinning shears or let them thin out your hair. It breaks up the curl pattern and messes you up for real. 10) Good luck! Don't feel like you have to learn everything all at once take it in your own pace, I'm several years in and I still get lazy about it sometimes.

I totally feel you Rachel, I went to a hairdresser for the first time when I was 14 years old, up until then my mum had always cut my hair. When I went there, I had a Ponytail (as pretty much 99% of the time back then), then the hairdresser washed my hair and she said "Oh you actually have curly hair, do you want me to straighten it afterwards or dry it curly?" And I was like -whaaat- "I don't have curly hair" and then she cut it and scrunched it up and used a diffuser to dry it and I was like -whoaaaat- again, that was such a new experience. I have super curly hair, I'd love to give you a tip! Day after washing and styling your hair, get it a little damp again and scrunch it dry (or see what happens without touching it at all, curls form better undisturbed) and do that every day until you wash again. Test with different levels of wet and try multiple times a day re-wetting. My curls get so much more defined with day or two old 'dirty' hair

Girl, I so love this for you!! Troubleshooting tips from a fellow CG with 2b waves: Yes, get a diffuser, it really helps! Get a spray bottle of water to re-wet your hair!! Great for refreshing 2nd and 3rd day hair as well, to get those waves back . Smooth and then scrunch in your products for more even distribution. There are a few different ways of applying product (i.e. praying hands, raking), you find what works for you. :) DON'T scrunch out the crunch until you are 110% dry. Scrunching the crunch when wet creates frizz. Some even prefer to sleep in their cast and it scrunches itself out overnight. And lastly, don't be afraid to use sulfates once a month or so. Wavy girls still get buildup that needs to be removed more often than other curly girls. Best channels I've found for wavies: RealLife+CurlyGirl India Batson

Same here although I was 12 or 13 when I first discovered this: I asked for an above shoulder cut because I was tired of being forced to put it up for certain classes (science etc). I just had another stylist appointment and decided to cut off more than usual - went in with hair that reached about 2-3 inches past my collarbone, now the shortest part at the back just barely brushes the nape of my neck and the longest strands at the front just reach my collarbone. We added layers and trimmed up my side fringe, and boom! The most gorgeous, fun, bouncy curls I've had yet! This might be my new favourite length now.

*Opinion Alert:* The funnest part about the curly girl method is that you really have to customize it for you The level of natural variation means that even if you have hair extremely similar to say, a both-parents sister of yours, you will both still benefit from tweaking your individual routines So the guides you find online are still suuuuper useful, but you need to experiment to find what really really works Another fun thing is the effects that aging will eventually have on your hair, which unfortunately will mean you have to start tweaking it again once you start getting older Thankfully you don't have to get it perfect. Even the one size fits all is gonna mean happier hair than no method period

It truly is crazy how a lot of people have texture in their hair beyond “straight, but frizzy”. That frizz is untamed texture that could be wavy or curly if you nurture it! I wish straight wasn’t the default that people strive for because of society and media. A lot of people struggle against their hair texture and end up burning it to a crisp to get it straight. I wish people could embrace their natural hair and not feel ashamed or bad about it. I know way too many people who destroyed their hair in the pursuit of straight hair.

It's good for all curl types and really holds my curls after I shower. The products are a little expensive so just try the gel to see if you like it. CUTE! I'm so happy you're finding your natural texture and learning proper curl care! I grew up when straight hair was everybody's goal, so I heat-straightened mine for a lot of years until I decided to avoid all sulfates and silicones and heat styling and let my hair recover. We have similar hair texture (I'm also a redhead with long, fine, wavy-curly hair) so I hope you really love it. I use a lightweight oil to control frizz and add shine after I apply a leave-in and curl moisturizing cream.

I’m so happy for you, Rachel! As a former newbie to the curly girl method and is now about 3-4 years past, I can give you some important advice. Brands of products do not matter. The cgm seems to exist to just push you into buying and trying products. You don’t need to do that. Just make sure the ingredients are cgm friendly. I used so many products to begin with, spending tons of money, watching youtubers for techniques and all that. And my hair looked like shit (I had straightened my hair nearly every for 15 years prior). The thing that worked was getting rid of my straightener, adding a large diffuser attachment to my hairdryer, and time. Your hair needs to grow out because you’ve damaged it with heatstyling for years. It might take you a few years like me but you’ll get there. I barely use any products now. Just shampoo/conditoner then rinse while in the shower, turn my head upside down, remove all tangles with a wide tooth comb, stop the water, use a leave-in conditioner and rake it through my hIr then squish my hair up til it’s no longer dripping wet. Then add a little gel and a scrunch some more. Get out of the shower and diffuse hair upside down with low or no heat until 75% dry. Let the rest air dry. Then scrunch out the crunch and place your fingers in your hair to shake it slightly. You will have beautiful wavy curls and volume like you’ve never thought possible. I get compliments daily from people, even repeat compliments from the same people and all I say is.. oh yeah, I washed my hair today. Day 1 always looks the best. I can’t go longer than a couple days though because of my job but even washing every other day, my hair is beautiful.

@@KatBiscuits I’m glad I could help out! To be honest I was so disillusioned with the curly girl method because my expectations were not managed properly. My hair was so damaged and I thought that cgm would fix it in less than a year. But I went from 2b to 3b in 4 years or so as I grew all the hair out and had regular curly cuts (my stylist is incredible, I will follow her anywhere.) Stopped following all cgm influencers (I used to be subscribed to a LOT) and just did my own thing. I didn’t want my hair routine to be complicated. I figured out what works for me and I’m happy. Caveat: I’m not saying that everyone can go from 2b to 3b! This is just what my hair had the potential to do. It wasn’t frizz, it was curl. If I knew my hair could form ringlets that looked like a salon did it, I would have never gotten blowdrying and straightening my hair. But alas, my mom had straight hair as did the rest of her family (Asian) and my dad (European) had straight hair. Didn’t know til much later that all of my dad’s sisters had curly hair and a couple of his brothers.

I guess frizz is a good indicator of your hair type. I do have pin straight hair and it's very hard for it to get frizzy. I need a good amount of split ends and tie my hair up as messily as possible so that it starts knotting, and the air needs to be dry so I've got some static pushing my strands apart. I'm around the 1 year mark of my last haircut, forecast says it's 13% humid today, I haven't brushed my hair for the last 24 hours and been speeding downhill in wind on my bicycle several times. I have some tangles that come undone with just running my fingers through, but no frizz still. And I barely condition. If the water I'm using isn't very hard, I'll be ok skipping the conditioner altogether for 1-2 washes. Judging by the fact that I do nothing with my hair apart from washing and maybe brushing, I'd be so lost if I needed to care for curly hair. No wonder your family didn't realize there was a way to help with the frizz. Hope you found the best routine for your hair :)

@@NA-yq4pe The frizz comes from breaking up the natural curl all the time, the hair then tries to find a curl again but doesn't organise itself well. Some things I found helped: using conditioner loads (the method of washing with conditioner first, then shampoo, then conditioner works great), leaving the conditioner in for a few minutes at the end before rinsing it out, not brushing your hair that much (I would only brush it out in the shower when there is conditioner in my hair), and if you want the curl to form a structure then you do need to consider leave-in products at the end of the shower - i am happy with mine just being a loose wave so I don't do this anymore. The routine Rachel did with the t-shirt is very helpful too if you have long hair, it helps keep the moisture in a curled shape for longer. I also avoid shampoos with sulfates, and conditioners with non-degradable silicones. Most silicones need sulfates or hard chemicals to wash out, so an easy test of what silicones you can get away with is to see what builds up without sulfate shampoos and what doesn't. Ultimately what you're trying to achieve is moisturise and nourish the hair, and it will do its thing.

I have always had super thick easily tangled hair...turns out it was curly and brushing was making the tangles 100% worse. Lots of frizz typically means dry hair + curls. I recommend a gel or serum for when your hair is wet to help boost moisture and keep the curls separated. Ditch the brush. Shower combs are cool (comb only when wet and use a wide tooth), and shower as little as possible (really only need a shower once a week. If you have a dirty job and have to shower often don’t use products in your hair on those days.) And that’s all I’ve figured out so far.😂

also, try clipping at your roots while your plopping. that will help give volume to the top of your head. but i think it looks nice like this too, it’s just cos you have no layers up top that it’s more flat than you would like it. and don’t forget to break the cast only when you hair is fully dried to minimize your frizz as much as possible. curly will always have some frizz, but that’s how wash and go’s last the longest! i even go to sleep (in my satin bonnet of course) with my cast in tact and then break it in the morning

As someone who has been on a curly journey for YEARS, here are my best tips: 1) time is your friend. You can’t rush the learning and adjustment process when you’re new to curly/wavy hair. Let everything take the time it needs and you will see results 2) change is good. I’ve changed my routine a lot over the years, but it’s bc my hair’s needs changed. There is not one single method you need to stick to forever because your hair will change over time. 3) don’t buy every single product they use online. Don’t waste your hard earned money, especially before you check what you already have. I only recently learned about protein and I freaked out about having to buy protein products only to find that most of my products already had low amounts of protein in them. Thus, I saved my money because I was already buying protein products

Agree! Especially about the last point. Some youtubers are all about fancy products for their routines and it kind of makes you wonder if your routine is sh* after all. But most of the times, the products you already have and which have never caused you a single problem, are just as good.

As a man with long curly red hair; welcome to the club! My routine is a bit easier: when showering use shampoo on scalp, rinse, use a decent amount of conditioner(apply by crunching) , comb through hair with fingers to get tangles out, if it does not feel smoothly when detangling use more conditioner (or better), rinse conditioner out. When out of the shower I use some serum and comb(wide-tooth comb) everything the way it forms curls in the right spot (this can be skipped if you want more curls). Then I just let it air dry. For products you are right that buildup is bad, the main bad ingredient are silicons. Sulfates don't build up, but they see needed to remove silicons, they remove the natural oils though and are harsh on sensitive skin. Also, if you want your hair to be a bit less flat on the top, try to move the part more to the side!

That's mine exactly! Though as a kid mine was apparently straight, it got poofy over the years. Recently i tried curly shampoos and with my post quarantine short haircut, it got the curliest it's ever been

as a hairstylist i can say that a lot of people have different wave patterns all over their heads...i’ve seen curl/wave in the back to pin straight at the front, wave on one side but nothing anywhere else and a couple of times i’ve actually permed just certain parts of someone’s hair just to get it to match the rest! hair is a crazy thing sometimes 🤪❤️

when my hair dries naturally, it's only curly on the right half (3C) and almost straight (2A) on the left half. some parts are wavy but it's pretty much half and half.... it's annoying 😅

I joke that my hair couldn't decide what texture it wanted, so it's just tried out all of them on different parts of my head.

That’s my hair, it wavy on the hairline, curlier on the right side, and the rest is just straight straight, it’s weird

To add to this! In my experience as a girl with hair that grows like a weed tbh, if your hair is long it may weigh down you curls and make your hair wavy! Whenever I cut my hair my curls always return full force, always! And then disappear gradually as my hair gets longer, and then BAM! I cut it again and they're back! So if you have long hair and think it's straight, I may not be! Your curls might return to you when you cut and the hair care in the video may be of use to you!

Layering your hair will help with this, also trimming the ends on your own and specifically cutting off any splits ends will also help.

When I was younger I had quite staight hair even when it was short. Now I've had long hair for like 7 years and the ends form curls when my hair dryes, even if I brush my hair before letting it air dry 😂 I wonder if I would have curlier hair now if I cut it.

Do it! That's definitely a huge sign of curly hair. It doesn't want to get brushed and straight! 😂 It also doesn't need to be complex and difficult to do. If you just give your hair time, the change will happen even if it takes a little longer without all the extra products. ❤️

Honestly sis, don't feel bad for not knowing your hair wasn't straight. When I was little I literally thought that my hair was curly because my mom would curl it often for pictures and parties and whatever. It made sense to me at the time because her hair was straight, one of my older brother's hair was overtly straight while my eldest brother and my dad just had hair too short for me to tell it was curly and for whatever reason, I didn't realize that naturally curly hair was a thing at the age of 4.
